I'm off to Brisbane to see the mighty Cirith Ungol, live. I'll be riding the Honda CRF300 Rally down so I can explore a bit while I'm there. Should be awesome!
There's not a whole lot out here. Middlemount QLD was the only petrol and food for 271 km. Hardly any traffic, and no police or speed traps for the whole journey so far.
My friends always tell me how boring the highway is, but I missed having plenty of servos or covered rest areas to break up the ride and relax for a bit.
Sometimes when roads are moved, parts of the original road are just left behind instead of being removed.
I like to follow these when I see them, to find out where they go. Sometimes they lead to interesting places, like the creek yesterday. This one just stops at a dead end where it would otherwise intersect with a new road.
I don't know how time always manages to slip away from me when travelling by motorcycle.
When I left my accommodation at 9 am, my next destination was a 5-hour ride away.
Next thing I know, it's 3 pm. I've been riding for a bit and was getting hungry, so I thought I'd stop for a break. I figured I must be getting close to my destination, but I checked Google Maps just to be sure...
So far, I think the ride from Chinchilla to Toowoomba QLD has been the highlight. It's a cruisy, quiet country highway ride through some beautiful cotton farms.
But since I got to Toowoomba, everything has been chaos. In one day I've seen three coppers, four speed traps, the aftermath of a fatal motorcycle accident, aggressive motorists speeding everywhere, and even had a semi pull out in front of traffic on a 100 km/hr (65 mph) highway. 😬
In our latest @longreads feature, Emily Zebel goes on a weeklong solo motorcycle trip to find a way to cope after a breakup with the first man she loved following her divorce.
"I don’t tell him that I can’t go home until I learn something. What, I don’t know. Nevermind how."
I almost fucking died while riding yesterday, and it was all my fault! :blobfoxscared: #motorcycle
I was passing a truck on SR-20 right as oncoming traffic—hidden by trees when I started my pass—was almost right in front of me. I only had a few feet to slip between both oncoming traffic and that truck. Never passing with such little margin again!
On another part of the same highway, when I was rejoining traffic from the shoulder (forgot to plug in my heated jacket liner), a big Ford E-series van tried to race me. They didn't stand a chance. :blobfoxsmug: #motorcycle
