Sometimes I want to re-watch a movie/series but don't want to actually spend the time to do it. Do you think with neuralink I'll be able to beam Revange of the Sith to my brain and consume it in 5 seconds?

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@sotneStatue I get the same feeling.

For TV shows in particular, I find that watching YouTube videos can help. For example, retrospectives, season reviews, lore, etc. They remind me of the highlights without committing to watching the whole show.

An American friend of mine thinks beans on toast is disgusting. So to all none Brits (as we find it delicious)…is it disgusting to you?

Side note - I find it astonishing that someone from the country that invented “cheese in a can” can find this “dish” disgusting. 😂

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev Not disgusting. It's not as common here in Australia, but it's not bad.

@dosnostalgic Woah, is that based on the War Planets childrens' toy line?

I loved those toys. I vaguely remember there was a TV series, but had no idea about a video game.

I work in IT, but I don't work in desktop IT, so I don't have any special rights to do anything on my own personal work computer. It's just as locked down as anybody else's. I can sudo to root on our servers, but I can't change my desktop wallpaper. Recently, corporate decided to hide Desktop in Quick Access, so I can't save to my desktop without going to c:\users\mike\Desktop. Plus, it's only hidden, not removed, so it's technically there and can't be added back. ARGGGG!

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike My workplace uses a product named Beyond Trust to manage our desktop computer privileges. It lets us run programs as Administrator without being local administrators on our computers.

However, the only way to use it is by right-clicking programs with the mouse. It can't be used from the command line at all. There's no sudo equivalent, and it doesn't support Start-Process -Verb RunAs in PowerShell. 😞

I see so many cool indie projects that have been made by really talented developers, and I'm very jealous!

@kev It's always great seeing what other people achieve, but it's also important not to hold yourself up to them as standards.

Life is short. You can't do everything, and there will always be somebody (more likely, a lot of people) better than you at any given thing.

I guarantee there are plenty of people who look at your work and feel the same way about you as you do toward those you just wrote about.

I'd start then from the beginning, but out of curiosity - which book does the TV series end at?

dHeinemann, to Steamdeck
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

I bought a Steam Deck! I would've got one much sooner, but they still aren't officially available in Australia. I finally found a good importer and picked up the OLED 512 GB model.

I'm extremely happy with it. Right off the bat, I was struck by how great the ergonomics felt. It fits my hands near-perfectly. Heavier than the Nintendo Switch, but not too heavy.

Performance is good - comparable to my aging GTX 970. Having that in such a small form factor seems amazing.

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

The Steam Deck ships with SteamOS, a bespoke Linux distro by Valve. Apparently it's based on Arch.

The SD runs in gaming mode by default, which provides a polished console-like experience. However, you can switch to the Linux desktop at any time.

The desktop runs Plasma as the DE, but comes with little else. Flatpaks are the recommended way to get additional packages.

By default, the user has no password, and full-disk encryption is not enabled. Fine for a console.

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

So far, my experience playing games on the Steam Deck has been excellent. Games known to be 100% compatible and SD-friendly are marked as such in the Steam store, so they're easy to find.

The software side isn't perfect - I've encountered small bugs here and there, but nothing significant. I'm used to things being a little bit janky on Linux.

Overall, I'm really happy with the SD. I can finally play my PC games while laying back on the couch. 😁

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey I also bought the official dock.

Unfortunately, it's a bit fiddly to manually plug in the USB C cable - nowhere near as easy to use as the Nintendo Switch in that respect.

It also doesn't seem to handle being unplugged or plugged in mid-game. In my experience, this causes the game's audio to stop working until it's exited and opened again.

Other than that, it works great with the TV, including with my 8bitdo Bluetooth controller. I'm really enjoying it!

I decided to revisit some of the Fediverse alternatives to Reddit after nine months.

kbin.social is overrun with spam.

Beehaw is very quiet. Doesn't seem to have much activity.

Lemmy.world is very active in the larger communities, but they all carry that "default subreddit" vibe, full of memes and shitposts. Smaller communities don't have much activity.

I'm really happy with Mastodon. Tonnes of activity, and no shortage of meaningful discussions.

@elaterite I remember seeing a military warning sign for the first time here in Australia. There were no threats of deadly force, just an implied risk of getting blown up. 🤣

Not gonna lie, it made me a little nervous. These signs were all the way along a public road up a mountain in Townsville QLD.

@elaterite We couldn't even build a fence to keep rabbits out, so I have little hope for a laser-proof fence. 🤣

I always find 'ghost' buildings rather interesting, but this one on Queen Street in Paisley is a particularly intriguing as it comes complete with mantelpieces still surrounding the places where fires once burned to keep long-gone rooms warm and cozy.

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@thisismyglasgow Thats interesting, I've never seen that before. It looks like nothing was ever built where the old building was torn down? If that's the case, do you have any idea why it would be torn down?

@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

Do you think there will ever be a "replica" tech market for old computers & displays? There's exciting progress around reproducing old game consoles & arcades with FPGA, but doesn't seem like old computers get the same love.

I'd like to acquire a large CRT monitor with a high refresh rate this year for example, but seems like it'll come down to luck if I find one that works for an extended period of time. I shouldn't have to learn electronics repair to enjoy retro technology.

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@rootcompute I'd LOVE to get a good CRT monitor, but they're hard to find and very expensive.

I'm hopeful that we'll see them come back eventually. All old tech eventually becomes trendy again, right?

The upcoming Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 is really growing on me now that we can see it without that ugly Tron-esque livery. Now it looks even better than the Super Meteor!

https://ridermagazine.com/2023/12/19/2024-royal-enfield-shotgun-650-review-first-look/

I wonder if they'll move the USB port to a more sensible location (the handlebars)? It'd also be nice to see a centred speedo with no tripper, but I'm not expecting that.

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev The new Himalayan looks really impressive.

Personally, I'm holding out for a larger capacity Bullet - but I really want it to be an air cooled single, which is unlikely.

I can still dream though!

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev Same here, the simplicity of the Royal Enfields is a major part of their appeal for me. I also don't like that all their new bikes seem to have an off-centre speedo and Tripper. Hopefully the Classic/Bullet 650 will have a vintage style instrument cluster just like the 350.

Only a couple more days before I begin my next big motorcycle trip. Tomorrow, I'll have to start packing!

dHeinemann,
@dHeinemann@fosstodon.org avatar

Welp, it wouldn't be a proper holiday if I didn't fall off the bike during a slow speed maneuver at least once. 😅

No harm done, but this time I managed to do it with the top of the bike pointing downhill. Even so, I managed to lift it back up by myself on the second try, without even removing any luggage.

I've gotten much better at lifting the bike, but it helps a lot that the Giant Loop gear has plenty of grab handles to help pull.

Here's my collection!

The purple Game Boy Color was my first ever game system, followed by the purple and then the blue SP. The original DMG needs some repairs and replacement parts, it was a garage sale pickup years ago.

I use the a lot nowadays, but I still try to make time for the . The mini handhelds can be a nice change of pace as well! Do you still like old school handhelds? Let me know!

@rohad The original Gameboy is still my favourite way to play Gameboy games after all these years. ♥️
