#Portland, OR 🇺🇸 is the first “smoke stop” on the southbound #Amtrak Coast Starlight: everyone who wants may get off the train for a moment and stretch their legs. The lovely departure board in the main hall dates back to pre-digital times. And we again meet the Cascades #Talgo.
The #AmtrakCascades 🇺🇸 #Talgo8 comes with a @diningcar and a kitchen/bar car called #Bistro. #Talgo cars are comparatively short, hence the accommodation of the bar/kitchen area and the dining room in adjacent cars. The latter one also serves as the business class lounge.
From 21 May 2024 the new #Talgo Avril train sets will start to operate regular services, classified as "AVE". For the first time gauge-changing rolling stock is used for AVE trains allowing them to run on broad-gauge lines and include #Gijón, #ACoruña and #Vigo to the #AVE network.
The new services replace existing Alvia train pairs:
AVE 4061-4060/4280 Madrid <> Gijón
AVE 4345-4404 Madrid <> A Coruña
AVE 4385-4454 Madrid <> Vigo Urzaiz
AVE 5721-5750 Gijón <> Castello/Vinaròs
Back in 2005 or so, I was travelling with the night Talgo train from Zurich to Barcelona. When I woke up and noticed the time, I realized we'd be arriving soon so started getting ready. Then I stepped out of the cabin and saw Narbonne's wetlands ... and knew we were late.
An American passenger asked me whether we'd be arriving soon, as he had a connection to catch. Before I could answer, the car supervisor, who had overheard us, said we were over 3 hours delayed. Seeing our puzzlement he contributed, in my 20 years of service in this train we have never arrived on time.
The #Montpellier 🇫🇷 to #Barcelona 🇪🇸 “Catalan Talgo” is seen here arriving at #Narbonne.
At the border, an hour further south, these former #TransEuropExpress#Talgo cars will pass a gauge-changing mechanism before continuing on Spanish broad gauge.
