Hey #ABCNews - your reporting might be starting to show the influence of your new CEO’s biases. Seems to me that in this story,

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-05-22/tenants-fail-to-vacate-landlord-out-of-pocket-housing-crisis/103757112

The words “the agent accidentally sent a lease renewal to the tenants” are the only reporting of the real story here. So, the tenants got a lease renewal, and by golly they thought they had a lease renewal? How is this anyone’s fault but the agent’s, and then the landlord’s for choosing to be a jerk about it?

I get that “The tenants denied ABC's request for comment”, but seriously, you therefore, with the exception of that one sentence above, ONLY attempt this from the POV of the landlord???

And, sorry, let me get the world’s smallest violin for the guy who had a $2000 expense after (a) SELLING a BLOODY HOUSE and (b) turning upside down the lives of the tenants who RECEIVED A LEASE RENEWAL.

Tenants on Isabella & Gloucester Streets were alarmed when their onsite security was pulled from their apartments. I went with a tenant leader to MetCap's head office to call for the reinstatement of this service. Corporate landlords like Starlight & MetCap cancelled services without notice or consultation with tenants while charging increasingly high rents. If this is happening to you, send a DM and my team will get back to you. #TorCen #TenantRights #OnPoli #Ontario #Toronto #TorontoCentre

Ford fails again.

For months, tenants at 30 Charles East have been ignored by their new landlord. No hydro, gas, water & heat. Frustrated, they move out of their rent-controlled units which the landlord promptly converts to profitable shot-term rentals.

Justin Cowen has been shivering inside his apartment for almost three weeks, boiling water to wash dishes and heading to the gym when he needs a shower. Cowen is one of dozens of residents in the 21- unit building in Toronto's Church-Wellesley neighborhood who have been without heat and hot water since Dec. 19, when Enbridge shut off the gas due to serious safety concerns relating to the building's steam boiler heating system. A CBC reporter watched a City of Toronto bylaw officer measure a temperature of 11.6 C inside one apartment last week. The reading, which was far below what's required by city bylaws, was taken when space heaters provided by the property manager weren't running.
Cowen and two other tenants told CBC Toronto the lack of heat is just the latest problem plaguing their quality of life since the new owner purchased the building. "Before March 2023, I really didn't have any issues with the building," said Cowen. "Then the building was sold. Suddenly, the lights were off in the hallway, we were losing heat, laundry was breaking down. No one would pick up the phone if I had any maintenance issues and things just kept getting worse and worse." Complaints about the building have surged since the property was sold. The city received only one request for service at the building between 2017 and January 2023, but it received 61 between March 1 and Dec. 31, 2023, spokesperson Asiia Danylova said in an email.
Inspector finds 'serious safety hazards' Resident Tanya Osmond said she raised concerns about work on the boilers to the landlord, as well as a number of officials including her MPP, the city's RentSafeTO program and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) - the provincial agency that regulates fuel and boiler safety. A TSSA inspector visited the building's mechanical room on Dec. 19 and identified several "code non-compliances," spokesperson Alexandra Campbell confirmed in an email to CBC Toronto. "Some of the non-compliances were serious enough that TSSA called in the gas distributor (Enbridge) as the fuel supply needed to be turned off for safety reasons," Campbell wrote. "We understand how difficult it is to have the gas turned off in winter and this action is only taken when serious safety hazards are found."

nwbcw,

So this apartment complex has been condemned for a year, evicting hundreds of tenants with a 48 hour notice.

Now they are opening units again, advertising under a new name, despite owing over $140,000 to Newport News Waterworks for which they were sued last month.

"Defendant has made no good faith attempt to satisfy this outstanding duly owed just debt,” one of the suites reads.

It’s also mentioned that services may be “shut off” to force compliance, which would cause the building to fail inspection."

The listings claim the units will be fully renovated with prices from 1,225-$2,500 a month.
