Looking at my list of auroras from airliners, flights 5/13 have been in March (or early April). But of the 13, 6 were on SOFIA in southern hemisphere winter so don't count and two were on a trip to Canada. So. Russell McPherron Rules! Who else has seen an aurora australis from an airliner?

On the one hand, it's good to know that a Boeing 737 can land safely after a window blows out in midair. On the other, I'm not sure I could ever get myself back in a plane if I'd been seated anywhere close to the blowout.

The has gone back to barking at , after my daughter came home briefly in between an internship and college. We told him "she's on an airplane" and now he's warily guarding the yard from airplanes, lest they steal any more of his humans!

So I took a sick day today (flu symptoms) and got bored so fired up the solar telescope for some relaxation. Was happily photographing sunspots and then this happened at 1:43. Bloody Air NZ!
