Removed some water sprouts from the pear tree that I had to severely prune last year because it was threatening the house.

Left a select few where I would like new branches to be.

Also had to shorten a branch on an apple tree that was about to snap off under its own weight. Better to lose a few apples than the entire branch.

Stephen's back with more details on deadheading! 🥀

Learn how pruning techniques are specific to climate and environment, and why in Southern California we cut below the 5-leaflet leaf when deadheading.

got some preventative maintenance (why do these things get shipped with zero grease!?) and got put to work. Did a good job, chewing through the promised ⌀ 44 mm branches no problem.

Spread the output around, some in the greenhouse, some for walking on and some for the , because it's more interesting to scratch in than poopy mud.

More branch piles to come!

Herr Schröder being fed the last few branches from the pile. Only leaves remain, and a wheelbarrow full of shredded chips.
Chickens happily scratching in freshly dumped branch shreddings. The rest of the area is brown poopy mud, as they have scratched away all plant life, as they do every autumn!

So what was done in the partly rainy and very windy 5 hrs, considering …?
Quite a lot actually, but no tile fixing on the patio.
Both magnolias and the old plum tree were rid of dead branches & pruned to proper size and form. All to high for me to reach.

This Japanese maple was installed about 12 years ago. Annual pruning is important to retain the beauty and sculptural interest of the tree in summer, but especially in winter.
