Having a Spring Drive one and a Quartz one in my collection already, it is only natural that my 3rd #GrandSeiko would be a Hi-beats automatic. When I saw the radial snowy dial, the 44GS case and the blue GMT hand, I knew that the SBGJ201 aka “Mt Iwate” was the one. It’s not the first watch that can handle timezones in my collection but definitely the first regular GMT. #watches#watchesofmastodon
I've recently gotten into #watches and #space at the same time. They do tend to be related, but I never expected interest in one to create interest in another.
All that to say, all the cool gears in mechanical watches are awesome. But, I also got a Casio G-SHOCK that syncs with the radio broadcast of the atomic clock every night. Its really fascinating technology, at least to me!
I just bought my 2nd #GrandSeiko. Will talk about it and explain the choices I made once I actually get my hands on the box. The only thing I will tease is that this reference is very plain and simple, and probably not one I would have considered 3 months ago before I had owned the very fancy SBGA259/Golden Snowflake. #watches#watchesofmastodon
Boderry titanium field watch automatic NH35 screw down crown. Available at Boderry.com. Chinese made made well. There's a bronze version too. #watches#watchesofmastodon
I don’t know how controversial my opinion is but I find the modern #Rolex Air King extremely unappealing. It has lost a lot of the traits from the original looking more like a weird downgraded mix between an Explorer and a Milgauss. And it doesn’t even live up to its name anymore as its design is inspired by a car and has almost nothing to do with airplanes/pilots. #watches#watchesofmastodon
I got an opportunity to get a #Cartier Tank for an alright price, but it is the Americaine. Not my favorite. Still thinking about it but will likely pass... #watches#watchesofmastodon
50s vin age Tissot bumper automatic #watches#watchesofmastodon . What's a bumper movement?
The bumper movement is a type of automatic movement that uses a rotating weight, or rotor, to wind the mainspring. The rotor is attached to a pivot, which allows it to swing back and forth within a limited arc
I recently went through a full power reserve run of my mechanical watches to check which one might need service. They all kept time alright but unsurprisingly the 2 older Rolex are not in good shape endurance-wise. Everything else actually exceeded specs so it’s great to know that they are fine. The Grand Seiko lasted for 75h (vs 72h on paper), surprisingly the Poljot 65h (vs 48h), the Datejust 51h (vs 42h), the Knot 45h (vs 40h). #watches#watchesofmastodon
Recent addition to my collection: Two-tone Datejust 36mm reference 16013 with jubilee bracelet. This one has 2 slightly unusual features:
it still has its service stickers with reference on the back
it has the uncommon Buckley dial and even more uncommon in cream color since most Buckley dials are usually white or blue. The irony is that it likely looks less flashy to regular people but probably stands out more in the eyes of #Rolex collectors 😅 #watches#watchesofmastodon
So, #Norqain is, for the first time, in Geneva at #Watches & Wonders. And they try what has been tried several times before, an online configurable watch model. So far, no one really succeeded at this, and I think they will fail, too. Sadly.
I am generally not a fan of #Rolex. It may sound funny since all high-end #watches are luxury, but Rolex is in its own league when it comes to being overpriced. I also don’t like how the brand treats their customers with wait-list and service. And most of their models are too gaudy to my tastes. With that said, there are a few exceptions and one of them is the Speedking 6430, predecessor to old Air-king. Manual wind, no hacking, tiny (31mm), simple with cream dial #watchesofmastodon
A watch I don't wear that much nowadays for geopolitical reasons, but...I do like it. It's cheap and good and has a 10 year service interval due to the innards being apparently primitive as hell. Loses about a minute a day mind you. A Vostok Komandirskie.
Does anyone in fedi know anything about #antique#watches? I have a lot a massive collection of #elgin watches that I've inherited that I really want to know the history behind them.
Ever since the update to iOS17, I was unable to use my #Pebble watch due to the sideloaded Pebble app constantly crashing badly. But I recently found out that iMazing could help restore the original IPA which is supposed to be a bit less broken than sideloaded. It seems to be indeed the case. Now I can at least load and manage apps/watchfaces. This is giving me more confidence that I can get back to using regular #watches and transition away from the #Apple Watch by using the Pebble time.
