@pb

Weekend project: upgraded our system with and a RAIDz1 pool from 4 TB to 16 TB. Easy peasy! with ZFS was one of the best choices for our NAS. Combined with it is the best backup solution.

What do people use to do offsite backups with?

Currently I have a pool, on which I take a daily snapshot of certain datasets, clone them, and send those using to a (with , and activated).

Currently I have snapshots going back to mid 2022, which are being pruned according to a schedule, but I've already exceeded 5TB of storage.

I'd like something that'd perhaps slightly less convoluted, but also doesn't break the bank. I'd love to use straight ZFS but that is priced out of my budget.

Going to have to build a capable server now to backup too for my . I wonder what OS / Distro I should use as currently the old one is running Ubuntu ? Should I go with or just stick with what I know Ubuntu ? 🤔

PS I haven't the extra hardware yet.

Debian 12 aka "Bookworm" is the latest stable release of the popular Linux operating system. I use Debian's live install image to create a minimal, console-only base configuration using the OpenZFS filesystem with native encryption.

This is how I do it ...

@dwarmstrong How did your #VoidLinux #ZFSBootMenu foray go ?

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

I'm wondering if you swap out /dev/urandom for /etc/zfs/zroot.key in /etc/crypttab like below.

cryptswap /dev/disk/by-partlabel/cryptswap /etc/zfs/zroot.key swap,offset=2048,cipher=aes-xts-plain64,size=512

Would create the encrypted swap and unlock it using the same key as ??

Any other ZFS users on know the answer ?

Reference is taken from @dwarmstrong blog here:

@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

I think I should just give up on suspend to disk when using encrypted as I don't use it anyway. It's just one of those things that bugs me. Do it just because it might be possible.
I'm going to encrypt my swap as per the above blog post and remove resume support by adding to my /etc/dracut.conf.d/zol.conf

omit_dracutmodules+=" btrfs resume "

Then I'll reconfigre linux and re run sudo generate-zbm and that will be the end to it. 🙃

laptop users do you have any recommended settings that you add into /etc/modprobe.d/zfs.conf ?
Things like zfs_arc_max, zfs_txg_timeout and so on ?
I'm running on a 1Tb nvme drive and have 16Gb ram currently but will get around to upgrading it to it's 40Gb max soon.
Any tips appreciated. 😉

Please boost and thanks in advance ❤️

Just in case anyone is interested or better still has some tips on my newly setup #VoidLinux #ZFSBootMenu laptop which is a #ThinkPad Gen 1 P14s AMD with 16Gb ram. But I'll be upgradeding shortly to the full 40Gb. Anyway here is the output of arc_summary and free -h . If I run btop it deducts the arc ram used so without that and running 17 tabs on #Qutebrowser and one foot terminal I'm using 2.62Gb but with free -h it shows as 6.5Gb which obvs is for zfs usage. #ZFS

Yes I've used a large swap but that's what I had before and well I can afford the space.

Well it's booted and I'm in as root for now. I see a few errors on screen there which I can hopefully resolve. Not sure about the "failed to lock /etc/exports.d/zfs.exports.lock: No such file or directory" ????
So all in all I take this as a win as I did expect it to boot first time. I have been documenting my steps though in case I need to redo this install.

Prepping ready for the big daily driver wipe tomorrow. Making sure I've backed everything up and printing off notes ready for the / install.
Fingers crossed this will go as smoothly as it did on my test laptop. 🤞 :void:

So this Christmas not only will I be merrily eating and drinking but I've decided I'm going to wipe my daily driver aka the P14s Gen1 AMD and reinstall . So this time instead of having an EFI boot partition and LVM encrypted swap and root. I'm going to have the usual EFI boot partition along with an un-encrypted swap partition and a fully encrypted partition. Keeping the swap out of the zpool will allow me to use suspend to disk if I ever decided to use it.

    My desktop started to hang often and sometimes even restart by itself. I am suspecting that the RAM is dying. Other suggestions?

    hadret,

    @stfn I had a case of a faulty RAM socket in my #NUC — I wasn’t able to confirm it via memtest and I noticed because of stability issues (and random restarts) + #ZFS was reporting mismatching cksums. I tested in one socket at a time and figured which one was faulty (RAM sticks themselves were both healthy). Good luck on your hunt!
