that @JasonPunyon curated and compiled a whopping archive of answers from and assorted Q&A sites in a minimal sqlite format, where they can be downloaded and analyzed offline:

Amazing effort and great idea. Reminded me of the archives that kept of it (alongside Wikipedia and similar projects), but more streamlined and cross-platform. Nice.

Using #Linux in a Corporate Laptop for work

https://kzimmermann.0x.no/articles/linux_work_laptop.html

Longish post that I've been meaning to post for a few weeks now. I tried to run only #FreeSoftware for work for a month and the result was amazing. Here's a few tips on how I did it in case you want to try it too.

Needless to say, I have zero intentions on going back. Long live Free Software: Liberate your Hardware today!

@danielittlewood that's true. Come to think of it, there were so many other ways my job could've made it harder, huh. Photoshop, Autocad, etc. At least Microsoft and Google basically develop for Chrome, so we're still in the same boat.

I have edited documentation with LibreOffice locally, but a lot of what we use is "co-authored" by many people at once via webapp. This benefits me, to be honest, because at least no one complains if "weird formatting" from LO is left on them.

@vazhnov aww man, I feel sad for you! But in a way, do you find it less painful than, say, Windows? I once worked in a place with a Mac, too. A lot of people said "oh, at least it's Unix-based, so should be similar to your Linux, right?" But in my experience, I found the two as much related as a motorboat to an airplane because "the two have a propeller." :P

Linux on Mac hardware, however, is quite another story :D

Decided to play around with #chroot again. But this time I beefed it up considerably. Basically built a mini-Debian stable install on top of #Devuan with debootstrap and started installing some internet-facing utilities on it.

Got to the point where I'm running chrooted firefox, which works pretty transparently, except I get no sound (yet). What could I try next?

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

Really neat how much you reduce in size given some of the host filesystem re-use (mounts, etc). Graphical environment and all, yet the whole chroot is just around 1.8 G in size.

(clarification: firefox is running as a regular user I created inside the chroot, not the root user)

Gratuitous reminder that (and the better fork ) don't only work with YouTube, but rather with pretty much any other media site you want to download music or videos from.

Own your media. Play anywhere and however you want. Download it. Reward authors in more direct ways. ,,/

seen in another toot:

> FreeBSD is working on a graphical installer. Finally.

"finally" what? like, what is the actual benefit to users here?

bsdinstall could definitely do with some improvements to its workflow (which people are working on) but it's already pretty intuitive and easy to use.

if you install FreeBSD with a graphical installer, you finish the install, and then... you end up with a "login:" prompt on a text terminal. so you didn't gain anything from having a graphical installer.

if the idea here is to make FreeBSD easier to install/use, then the focus should be on the post-install system (e.g., installing DRM/X/Wayland/etc. by default), not on the installer itself.

@lw agreed, there's nothing wrong with a TUI installer. There's not even anything wrong with a script installer like in Alpine.

Post base-install options to bootstrap DEs and other GUI goodies would be welcome, though I probably won't use them.

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@lw and they could even take an inspiration from Linux in this point. Debian's installer works text-based (graphical is basically the same thing, but with a mouse) and offers clear and easy options to add popular DEs and other goodies post base install (which again I tend not to use). Just a matter of marking and pressing Enter.

Warning: broken - again - in latest unstable [ | ]

Well, let's just say it's a small price to pay for the unclogging of the previous 200+ held back packages. Good thing we have https://snapshot.debian.org/ to "roll back" a little!

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

Culprit seems to be actually libsnappy instead:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1070217

Downgrade that package to this version and latest runs again:

Looks like doing one apt full-upgrade to one of my #Devuan Ceres (unstable) machines safely "unclogged" the 200+ packages that had been held back for 2 months now with no apparent breakage anywhere else.

Guess it can be a useful trick (after analyzing carefully what in fact is being updated) despite my usual advice not to do it:
