Lemmy is safe for the moment - - contrary to larger social media : in this article they do not mention Lemmy as being a target.
Also, the title and the header of this post are well written and describe well what’s in the article.

You might absolutely be right about the meaning of O.P.s’ (confused) question. But still i hope at least i answered o.k. from this part :

And does the X chromosome do anything for me, or is it turned off, and only used if I pass it on to the next generation ?

P.S. : You asked :

Not every combination is being tried in the egg during fertilization, right ?

Gene selection is made before the synthesis of the gametes : for instance a male having XY will produce sperms, each one with either an X or with a Y.

Some genes are lethal let’s call them :
“T” bad version and
“t” for the version that lets you live.

if one of those genes is on the xx // xy chromosomes then if you are XX female you will get one combination in this set of combinations : Tt, tT, TT, tt
if you get TT, you are dead.
if you get tt, you live,
if you get Tt or tT you have 3 possible outcomes :
if T is dominant you are dead,
if t is dominant you live,
if T and t are co_dominant you might be sick.

if you are XY male, you have either a “T” (dead) or a “t” (alive).

'Confused' Judge Cannon needed concept explained 'slowly' to her in court by lawyers: NYT (www.rawstory.com)

As part of an analysis of how U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida Judge Aileen Cannon, reports from her courtroom show a judge who is both “prickly” and" insecure" and often has trouble understanding what lawyers from both sides try to explain to her....

i feel this as well, we may see proof that this is indeed right in the next days or weeks. Thanks for all the nice posts and comments, looks as if you were jet propelled !

You kinda have to believe in real magic to study science in-depth

I think this is the biggest problem I see in people trying to understand deeper fields of study, a concept is just too large or out of our perceived reality to even make sense without years of knowledge. I think people fall into the “woo woo” just because it’s easier to not really know versus becoming a doctorate in a...

The first philosophical astonishment is that anything at all exists. When I was first learning mathematics I was astonished to see that x^2^ + y^2^ = 1 was the formula to create a circle : such a simple formula to create something so fundamental was astonishing to me.
Today I would say our capacity to be astonished is probably an important mechanism to help us stop and say to ourselves : “hey ! there is something important to learn here !”

Thanks ! … if anyone else wants to know :
SOP stands for Standard Operating Procedure. Within secret scientific research groups, SOPs are established guidelines or instructions for carrying out routine operations to ensure consistency, quality, and compliance with regulations. These SOPs help maintain integrity, confidentiality, and efficiency within the research group.

The rules and conventions to do science today are quite well known and understood by educated people (including of course Helen Mosque) … but any rules have exceptions :
Project Manhattan to produce the atomic bomb was secret science : in many countries military will have secret science development. Pharmaceutical companies will do as well.
People in those projects will not have recognition by the wider public but they will have recognition from their group.

Here “MVP” stands for “Most Valuable Player” …
This should be read in the context of a somewhat widespread video game (or sport show) culture mostly popular in the USA and for young folks.
… i do not know why it says “real” though.

Edit : (after + searching ) Logicaly “real” is similar to “most” so, “real MPV” is “most most Valuable Player” which souds funny on purpose 😋.

Some More of God’s Greatest Mistakes ! 😋

(( “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” mentions a trilogy of books written by Oolon Colluphid. One of these books is titled “Where God Went Wrong,” followed by “Some More of God’s Greatest Mistakes” and “Who is this God Person Anyway?” ))

" … astronomers are now beginning to come around to the idea that some stars that produce black holes may do so without a supernova explosion."

This reminds me of one science fiction movie in the “Star Trek” universe where “Mr. Spock” was supposed to stop one supernova explosion by initiating a black hole inside the star that would produce the supernova.

indeed : if the post is sufficiently unpopular and repugnant to users it will be downvoted … but also if the post is appealing to user but at the same time it becomes popular (so not unpopular) then : well, you lose if you do, you lose if you don’t.

A_A,
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

Your nicely upvoted post is the antithesis of a previous post which was heavily downvoted … and those two posts (and their votes) together shows you are right (as users votes consistently) … Although, this might not be an unpopular opinion … hummm …
