fuck I installed a KDE metapackage and removing the metapackage didn't also remove all this fucking KDE

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@chfkch @aeva I mean you could technically install KDE by accident, but the “not remove it” part would certainly be gone.

I guess you wouldn’t even have to remove it as such vs. switching to a system view without it.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva @oblomov Definitely sounds grotesque. What kind of distro are you running? All of our 10-15yo potato machines are running Plasma plenty fast.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva @oblomov Did they perhaps package a horrendously old version? Being Debian and such I mean.

We’re booting off HDDs here, on low-ram systems, with old and/or integrated GPUs, merrily running Wayland and games and whatnot on fairly recent versions. 5.26 I believe?

Only exception I can think of is an old Nvidia GPU not being happy with Wayland on its legacy Nvidia driver.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva If this is an up to date version then I'm not sure what could cause the super slow login you describe elsewhere, but perhaps the pegged CPU could be the drive indexer?

AFAIK it shouldn't be enabled by default, but I am not very familiar with Debian packaging. If top gives you .baloo_file_ext then that is it and either disabling indexing or waiting for that initial run to complete should sort you out.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva Not sure where I went wrong in my phrasing. Why would I doubt the validity of your issues?
I was trying to help identify possible causes by identifying setup differences - so that the bad time might at some point be replaced with a good one.
Really sorry that my bad comms contributed to your frustration.

how many gists have i written?

the answer is yes

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@lritter Neat! A quick bit of shell scripting or a tool you can recommend?

Haven't given it much thought, but now that I have I should probably have a copy of mine.

AngryAnt,

@lritter Very neat! Thanks :)

Proton entering the password manager scene, this is good because we need more competition on this field https://proton.me/blog/proton-pass-beta

@djlink Sounds interesting. So far it looks like basically the same feature set as 1Password, but obv. am looking forward to seeing where they take it :)

If I am not here tomorrow then that is the natural order of things. Good luck to the rest of you.

Last boost: Neat little nostalgia trip. Kid Pix was a pretty fun diversion when I was a kid.

I don't think I tried to do any actual art with it though. At the time I was trying to make games. What I really cared about art for games. That meant it had to support pixel art and either either BMP files that I could use in VB3 or PCX files I could use in the C-based game projects I got from books and didn't really understand. (I was 9 or 10 at the time 🤷‍♂️)

My jam then was Paint Shop Pro (shareware)

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@beeoproblem Used to paint a looot of stuff in kid pix. That stamp library was just brilliant.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@beeoproblem Oh yea I completely forgot about that :)

If you're curious how my week is going, I wondered why a DM that I'd sent to someone had not been responded to, only to realise I'd somehow DM'd myself?

@AlfonsoD Welcome aboard! Running the same combo and thoroughly enjoying the experience :)

When you find the time, I would greatly recommend taking a look at Proxmox Backup Server as well - usable not just for backing up VMs, but also with clients available for backing up and restoring non-VM systems.

What is the full math of multiplayer? Is there any operator beyond 'v'?

PvP: Player vs player
PvE: Player vs environment
PvM: Player vs monster
TvT: Team vs team
PnP: Player coop
TnT: Team coop
PnE: Player improving/helping environment.

Combos?
PvPvE
TnTvE
PnPnMnE

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Danc @jaketforbes You might break things out into relationship operators, but the format still only describes very few things in a single line - IE AoBoC applying relationship operators only between A & B and B & C.

So then maybe use multiple lines or sets? But this doesn't leave room for which parties have which inter-relationships.

Maybe numbering the different parties? P1cP2vEvP3cT1? But what about alternate relationship groupings?

Number those as well?

Graph-to-text is rough work.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Danc @jaketforbes I guess TLDR; The full math of multiplayer is math ;)

    Used the new free bike valet at my local mall to get a hair cut. It was good! 4 car parking spaces for (I’m guessing) around 40 bikes capacity. I hope this catches on.

    Fun 2x "yay!" and 1x "whoops!" moment yesterday:

    • The sync service of the disc intake VM to media VMs is no longer CPU bound (post auth and checksum exchange I don't care about transfer protocol encryption).
    • The network segmentation works really well and the router is well scaled for high traffic.
    • That sync service now completely floods its network segment, drowning out all other services present for the duration of a transfer.

    Unexpectedly learning about traffic shaping. Silver linings ;)

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    Whoop! Traffic is shaping away and sync is still plenty fast :)

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    Final pass on intake flow: A lot of little nagging TODOs which just needed doing: Done.

    Taking a “new” PS2 title for a spin we picked up at a flea market at some point. Blasted through intake and onto the game system :)
