It is perhaps unsurprising that the social criticisms of generative "AI" that I find most compelling are the ones peering through a Marxist lens. Ownership and whose rights are respected are important. The algorithms, while impressive, are not the primary source of value in their output, the training corpus is. If it's permissible to train a model on publicly available (but not public domain) data, then it seems it should not be permissible for that model or its output to be private property.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@biphenyl I'm having a really tough time taking much of the huffing & puffing around generative AI seriously when there's an apparent insistence on treating it as a novel challenge vs. actually for once taking a look at how we want societal rules to work and why.

There's a stench of carte blanche for the owner class to keep doing the exact same thing like they've always done, now with the boost of "but it's not AI!".

I understand the frustration, but am frustrated by the narrow direction.

Please: What’s your good recommendation for tool to monitor power usage in my home. Either a device that sits on a kitchen bench showing stats, or something that connects to an app.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@corduroy Whatever you go with, the core advice is to pick something which is Zigbee based.

It is an open standard and more flexible & power efficient than bluetooth/wifi/whatever, so when (not if) the easy-on-click-solution-just-buy-here part of the product goes belly up, you are not just sat on a mountain of e-waste ready for the slag piles.

I don't know who in needs to hear this, but I've already seen 2 "what if we put chat gpt in our game, see!" Reddits and

I'm already sick of it, it's so bland, it's like you're serving up oatmeal.

I really don't think folks realize how important it is that dialogs hit an end, so you know when and where to progress. Instead, here's infinite oatmeal! Oh and it can hallucinate implications of side quests that don't exist and plot details that aren't applicable or game-recognized.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg It's games tech. Everyone wants the golden hammer and especially the latest, most shiny one.

Why actually consider the concrete merits of a piece of tech and apply with intent & care? 🤷

Also:

  • The best AI is Goal Oriented Action Planners because FEAR.
  • But the best AI is Behaviour Trees because Halo.
  • Conversely the best AI is Utility because The Sims.

    on a Mac with silicon chip, Unity Hub (intel) takes much longer to open then Unity editor (silicon) itself and that's kinda fascinating. Don't get me wrong, what rosetta does is insane in terms of compatibility but still.

    @logicalerror If you come for the fan-service then that is what it does and you'll probably have a good time. Outside of that it doesn't try to offer anything.

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @MouseByTheSea @logicalerror I haven't watched a lot of recent Disney movies in general, so I don't personally have a good basis for comparison there. But I heard similar from others - general for releases across their portfolio for the last couple of years.

    A comparison I can make is to the Dungeons & Dragons movie which not only falls in the same genre, but I also watched with the same group. All there agreed that D&D was the clearly better movie of the two.

    These new AMD Ryzen based frame.work laptops sure are tempting.. luckily, if I'd preorder now it would only ship in Q4, so I might as well wait until they're properly available :-p

    But I guess my next laptop really will be a frame.work, that concept of upgradability and user-repairability (incl. the possibility of reusing old mainboards as Mini-PC) is really awesome

    AngryAnt,

    I find when using GPT4 to help me write code that as soon as I say to myself "I don't need to understand this" in hopes that I can relieve the mental load, I spend more time fixing what it gave me than I would have if I had just thought hard about it in the first place.

    Does this happen to you?

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @benthroop I am utterly unconvinced of the long-term utility of LLMs as answering machines - they're not built for it, so it's not super surprising that they are absolutely terrible at it.

    They're super great at extrapolating context to help you extend that - IE exploring a creative space in less time than it would take to do fully manually. Which makes sense - that it the sort of thing they are designed for.

    For a "find me answers" solution, perhaps https://github.com/Significant-Gravitas/Auto-GPT is relevant to you?

    My personal website has been using for years, but I update it very infrequently, and every time I need to, some jekyll/ruby dependency or another has somehow broken or gotten out of date, and I have to dig around in docs to remember how to fix it.

    It's getting real old.

    Is there a better, simpler, lighter weight solution for based static sites these days?

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @invicticide My flow always goes through nix and it’s packaged there, so I’m relaxed on that front: https://search.nixos.org/packages?show=zola&type=packages&query=Zola

    A lot of people often refer to based operating systems as a or a alternative, but Linux can also do a lot of things that its competitors simply can’t.

    So let’s look at the things only Linux can do, and that Windows and macOS wished they could:

    https://youtu.be/TuPO-eAMy4I

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @alvinho @thelinuxEXP Sounds quite strange with that Acer machine - checking firmware is a good idea.

    I’ve not tested out Ubuntu on it, but am currently running latest NixOS with Plasma 5.27 on a first generation MacBook Air - which would be just under 15 years old at this point.

    It has an Intel iGPU, which makes things simpler, where I did have to juggle a bit with a legacy driver pack for an old iMac with an Nvidia card (also runs latest NixOS w. Plasma 5.27, but no Weyland).

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @thelinuxEXP @AmyIsCoolz Worth noting for anyone interested that there’s also a workaround available.

    It took all of five minutes to write up in a new .desktop entry and replace into the task bar before our teenager exploded with frustration (gotta get those dailies).

    AngryAnt,
    @AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @thelinuxEXP Obligatory “and nix” re: package managers on macOS ;)

    (We dev on macOS and NixOS and use nix to secure dependencies across platforms)

    Windows too if you could WSL I suppose, but at that point you probably have all Linux package managers anyway?
