Sweden wanted so hard to host #eurovision, congrats Sweden. You made cgi abba, arrested greta thunberg, muted the audience to hide the booing over the genocidal country you let in, and forgot to set the stage for the winner. Good jorb all around, clap clap.

@flameeyes It was 2017! But ok, granted, it was in the before times.

@popey Oh hey, welcome to the club! It dawned on me that something was wrong when, one day, I was talking on the phone and my cat walked by - my focus got sucked in by the swoosh of her tail and my hearing literally stopped working (and not for the last time). I was also finding it increasingly hard to navigate tasks and focus, my coping mechanisms were no longer enough. Medication has helped tremendously. Glad you found your path!

#xz

shana,
@shana@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink No, it's just that the probability of other commonly used, but seldom maintained, projects having backdoors is likely significant...

shana,
@shana@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva There was more than one sabotage point in xz, unrelated to the first backdoor, so...

Also, the probability that other commonly used projects with not-that-active maintainers might also have subtle backdoors is probably not insignificant.

Original maintainer of #xz has started undoing some of the changes introduced by the author of the backdoor https://tukaani.org/xz-backdoor/

Poor guy, I can't imagine the stress he must be feeling right now 😖

Comprehensive timeline of the incident is at https://boehs.org/node/everything-i-know-about-the-xz-backdoor

what would you call a git commit that can no longer be reached from any branch or reference (for example because you ran git commit --amend or git rebase), but that you can still get to from git reflog?

I've considered "orphan", "dangling", and "unreachable" but none of these seem right:

  • orphan has another meaning in git
  • dangling only refers to the "tip" commits
  • "unreachable" means that you can't reach it at all

would love a term that's already used, I don't like inventing terms

shana,
@shana@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@b0rk Why wouldn't it be a dangling commit? It is the tip of its own branching history line, it just doesn't have a label associated with it.

Later seasons fucked up the timing of the music and video cuts.

So... Lost my best friend a few days ago. After 6 months fighting with cancer, it finally took over.

RIP the funniest, the kindest, the loveliest, and the bravest of cats. I do miss you and I always will.

Looks like the Boring Company's Las Vegas tunnels are going about as well as you'd expect from an Elon project...

"The muck pooling in the tunnel at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip had the consistency of a milkshake and, in some places, sat at least two feet deep. ... At first, it merely felt damp. But in addition to the water, sand and silt—the natural byproducts of any dig—the workers understood that it was full of chemicals known as accelerants.

"The accelerants cure the grout that seals the tunnel’s concrete supports, helping the grout set properly and protecting the work against cracks and other deterioration. They also seriously burn exposed human skin. At the Encore dig site, such burns became almost routine, workers there told Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration. An investigation by the state OSHA, which Bloomberg Businessweek has obtained via a freedom of information request, describes workers being scarred permanently on their arms and legs. According to the investigation, at least one employee took a direct hit to the face. In an interview with Businessweek, one of the tunnel workers recalls the feeling of exposure to the chemicals: “You’d be like, ‘Why am I on fire?’”"

@luciedigitalni What are you talking about?? Taxis have existed forever, and the most widespread "mass transit" system in South Africa (where Musk is from) is bus-like services with private mini-vans as a workaround for the fact that they don't have actual public transportation. I hope this is you being sarcastic, because otherwise, ooof, you need your brain checked.

Git/LFS shows a lot of promise, but it's still a kludgy add-on. It needs to be built into core git with zero setup for users (not for admins). It needs to just work without any user knowing it's there.

Holy shit, waking up to a spambot flood. Luckily most of the spam accounts were from just several domains, so added some domain blocks, and now close to 1000 spambots should be suspended. But geez.

Just finished (re)watching the 13th Warrior, and you don't have to tell me it's a movie from the same composer and year as The Mummy, because boy oh boy is this literally the same music without being the same music (hashtag artist signature)

For anyone wondering what it was like being a teenager in the 90s, I give you, X-Files S2E14, "Die Hand Die Verletzt". The first 10 minutes are just so accurate to what the mindset/living experience/reality was in those times, it's as accurately creepy as watching Office Space 2k office worker, or watching Silicon Valley in the mid 2010s as a FAANG bee. Seriously, if you watch it, imagine yourself in a world where those things could be real, and you can be closer to what the 90s were like.

shana,
@shana@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@codinghorror If only I had enough money back in the 90s to buy copies of all those german teenager magazines with the Mulder covers, hubba hubba! Aaah, the 90s in fringe europe....

shana,
@shana@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@codinghorror I'll take those digits that might be accurate in some esoteric number bases!

shana,
@shana@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@codinghorror Actually, if you'll bear with me for a second here - it's not nostalgia, it's the realization that reality, or how we perceive it, was just so radically different back then (not better or worse, just different) - and how hard it is to describe how the change from then to now happened, and how hard it is to explain how "reality" was different back then. I find my awareness of that difference to be fascinating (cue Picard here), and also how that tinges my watching of a 90s show.

obviously companies need to sell stuff, but there's a lot of hardware and soft/SDK friction to be the MacOS space, not to mention expensive, they change & break things too often.

shana,
@shana@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink Ok, so, I've been using it for a while now, with a (unactivated, lol) version of Windows 11. It's really nice! Matte screen is great, I missed those a lot. Expansion cards (usb-c, usb-a, hdmi, etc) are truly interchangeable, "oh I need power on this side of the laptop, let me just move the slot around while the computer is doing stuff"
Good keyboard and trackpad, I've spent days typing on it on the kitchen counter. Decent battery life (for windows)
