Apytele,

100%

My psych unit used to have an amazing collaborative relationship with hospital security. Basically they would select the chillest security people to send to sit on our unit in 24/7 shifts. A lot of them were amazing verbal deescalators even if just by not responding when patients say dumb shit hoping to get a rise (especially racial or gendered slurs).

Now our security department is sending a bunch of former COs and LEOs and it’s like pulling teeth to explain proper violence prevention, especially in this specific environment. A bunch of them think they need to buck up with competitive aggression at patients who start shit to prove they’re tougher and I often struggle to explain to them that true displays of strength and control over the situation are much more subtle.

For example, one of my bigger power moves (especially for patients who give me a strong bark over bite vibe) is to have security wait beside the door and just out of sight outside the room. So if they do start swinging my backup is literally right there, but from the patient perspective, I’m comfortable and confident that I can defend myself (and I’ve developed a subtle swagger/relaxed gait and posture over the years to sell it too). No yelling or bucking up or threatening needed. Just a subtly firm and consistent “I ain’t worried about you doing anything I can’t handle.”

A lot of people also comment on how close I’m willing to stand to patients but a lot of these people don’t have enough situational awareness to intuit how close they can get and when. Like obviously when they’re yelling at you is not the time to step up on them to get a blood pressure reading? But even when they’re yelling at me about a foot or so beyond arm’s reach is fine, especially if your backup is already there.

Honestly (while this is definitely not the most important facet of this situation) this guy is actually making these cops less safe to boot. Creating a fundamentally adversarial relationship with the people they’re (supposed to be) protecting is creating a far more dangerous situation for everyone in the long run.

What's best practice in this scenario? (slrpnk.net)

So I’ve got this Monstera plant thats been with us for a while but recently got attacked by these tiny tiny black insects that keep eating the leaves. I’ve actively tried to get rid of them as well as screening this plant away from the rest, but the insects seem to always come back. I’ve just read that it’s possible to...

Apytele,

No idea but I wanted bump you a little in the activity stats for this post so you’ll maybe get an answer soon!

Apytele,

Just got my tubes taken out 6 hours ago before they could make that illegal too. Hurts like a bitch but I ain’t gonna just sit back and let them do me like that.🖕

In our post-AI era, is job security strictly mythical? Or How to believe in careers as a concept worth doing?

With the lastest news of AI layoffs, I’m struggling to understand how the idea of a career still holds. If careers themselves effectively become gambles like lottery tickets, how do we maintain drive and hopes in the longterm endgame of our struggles?...

Apytele,

lmk when AI can wipe your grandmas ass because right now they barely trust the robots to save my CNA’s back by just doing the lifting part. If an AI can actually do your job properly I can almost guarantee it wasn’t a real job to begin with. And yes, that includes artists; if an AI can match the quality of your art, you had problems way before all of this.

Apytele,

My lab partner in school was a memnonite. I’m sure she doesn’t speak for everyone, but her comment on the topic was something to the effect of,“we don’t hate technology, we just wait to see if you guys can work out all the kinks first.”

Apytele,

Idk but it’s certainly the same vibe if nothing else.

Apytele,

My psych patient realizes how to kill themselves while on watch. I love my technicians but 90% of them don’t have enough attention span or intuition to catch it. The only reason I caught it that one time was because I spent my 4 years in school sitting 1:1 as a job and one of my pastimes was looking around the room and trying to figure out how I would do it. I had a patient pick probably the single method most likely to be successful actually. The look of shock on their face when I immediately snatched it was almost worth the paperwork. It would have been even cooler if I’d told them I thought of that three years prior but there was some grappling involved and I was pretty out of breath. And no, I’m not telling you what the method is, but TLDR: nobody’s beat me at this particular game just yet.

Apytele,

And now horses eat their unhatched young for the calcium in the shells.

Apytele,

She has all the love of being into kid’s media, but without that usual weird adult fandom shit where they get super mad that entertainment for 10 year olds doesn’t speak to the adult life experience. My partner watches her videos and she often comments in her reviews why a theme park is not set up correctly to entertain a child, since that’s usually supposed to be the main theme park demographic. So with Jenny you get all the warm fuzzy nostalgia (and she’s also very well read/learned about her subject matter!) without the toxic fandom bullshit. She will mention toxic fandoms such as bronies giving her shit at conventions for not being a real fan of my little pony as a girl who was the exact right age when the OG MLP was running.

Super cool, thank you for sharing. Does anyone else know any good communities or other collections of just cool little internet stuff to go look at?

Edit: I am now realizing this is likely a French language server, my apologies. That’s what I get for browsing on all and forgetting to specify language. It’s been nice meeting all of you, sorry to intrude.

Apytele,

This is what I mean when I tell people this is a joke about creationism.

Those emergency room visits referenced were almost certainly not necessary and just the result of overly fussy parents (addendum: excluding weird allergic or idiosyncratic reactions to dyes and whatnot). It’ll do really weird things to you circadian rhythm and you’ll have some utterly surreal nightmares, but that’s not anything you can’t manage at home. It’s suuuch a light sleep aid it’s not going to sedate enough to mess with the drive to breathe and your body won’t convert enough of it to serotonin to do that either. It doesn’t really matter how much you take either.

The LD50 (average amount it takes to kill) is over a whole gram and is basically unestablished in humans. That’s an insanely large amount as far as medication dosing goes, especially since we’re talking by kilogram of body weight. The max established safe dose (no nightmares) that melatonin is routinely sold as is like 10mg total for an adult, so the person would probably need to swallow an entire 100-count bottle for every kilo they weigh. Also I almost guarantee any pediatric overdoses were the gummies (obviously), so they would have to eat a 100-count bottle of the highest dose gummies for each kg. Babies don’t even start eating solid food until around 6 months when they’ll probably weigh around 6kg, so picture an infant getting open and chugging down a half-dozen 100 count bottles. It’s a nonsensical picture.

The daycare workers should still be fired asf though that’s super weird and yeah those kids should be getting regular checkups to make sure this hasn’t messed with their growth or anything.

Apytele,

True!

I said local. I would encourage you to vote democratic at the state and national level but that’s not what this is about. Everyone pretty much already knows who they’re voting for in that part of the election. It’s the mayors and school board people we need to flip now too though if we ever want to get out of this. A pause button only helps you if you do something with the time you bought. The fact that you still had to make this conversation about the national race IS the psyop.

Apytele, (edited )

Cool, but people can do this right now on the toilet while shitting. They can start working on that other stuff when they actually have time. Baby steps here. Also you need third parties running things before you can get that done anyway because democrats won’t do that for the exact same reason they’ll never actually get rid of the Republicans.

Apytele,

Yes and no. I’ve had to insert a LOT of meaning to get a story worth any substance, and I’ve had to do a lot of editing to get good images. It’s really good at giving me a figure that’s 90% done, but that last 10% touching up still often takes me a day or so of work.

Apytele,

Yeah if half my patients just went out and found constructive hobbies that they can do with other people I would actually be really hyped. I especially like seeing young men stop fixating on women and just go develop things about themselves that are likeable and interesting to other people in general.

The craziest part is that I’d actually kind of prefer that they do this in most cases. Half the time this will be like 75% of what the therapist will tell them to do anyway and the other 25% is stuff like “stop getting most of your hydration from diet coke” and “yeah your dad was just kind of an asshole boomer; that happens a lot actually.”

And I’ll probably get shit for it again (but maybe I’ll explain it better this time?) but it’s actually really concerning how many people are leaning on therapy right now. I’m not saying it’s their fault, but saying more people need to go to therapy isn’t actually going to fix the issue. It would be like if were constantly maiming and injuring people and saying the problem was not enough people going to physical therapy. Therapists absolutely need to be a thing, but most people wouldn’t be having these problems in the first place if we hadn’t commoditized human interaction and largely eliminated publically / benefactor hosted social spaces.

And by commoditized I mean we’ve created this culture where we have all these rules for who gets to be mad or sad in each interaction and who is supposed to support who, often with the exchange of money involved. And I’m actually mostly talking about the service industry even more than I am about the mental health one, it’s just that their bullshit is seeping over to us and making the mental health (and general healthcare) industry a toxic sludgepile too. The only therapist I could get to call me back is part of a large online franchise that basically pimps them out like onlyfans models except my insurance pays and there’s no flirting or tiddy pics. I haven’t had the heart to pry into how much they’re actually making but I doubt it’s a lot.

TLDR: I don’t like modern “just go to therapy” culture because I think it’s completely missing the point. Even if we were properly staffed, the healthcare industry can’t conceivably fix the rest of society on it’s own. Also just fix housing already ffs. It will literally just put a cap on the mental health crisis. Like if we just took blackrock’s real estate and put homeless people in it the mental health crisis would just be like 80% solved. I’m not even kidding.

Most unique looking celebrities?

I’m working on a side project studying variations in human facial features. It’s been helpful to study celebrity faces because it’s easy to find numerous reference photos. I’ve actually got a fairly good range of weird looking white men, turns out Hollywood is pretty flush with those, but it’s been harder to find...

Apytele,

Exactly what I’m looking for, thank you!

Apytele,

Oh sisko’s dad!

Apytele,

He mostly has pretty average facial features but it has been interesting seeing how build comes through especially with the more heavyset combinations.

Apytele,

No just DS9. I shipped tucker and t’pol really hard but that had a lot more to do with how old I was when enterprise came out than it does with me actually liking enterprise. The other three I just never quite vibed with somehow. Not like with DS9 for some reason.
