By request, a little flashback to a 1966 newspaper article about the shop. This story mentions Dad (Walter Bonnett) too, so – early Happy Father's Day!

We've got great Father's Day Gift ideas on hand for all types of Dads!

[article text carefully edited for length] "10 Cents Worth Of Batman Will Bring You $75 Now" by Tim Bleck, Journal Herald staff Writer. Look. Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. It's the price of old comic books. For the price of a small set of encyclopedias you can purchase the 26-year-old original version -volume I, number one of the adventures of Batman at Bonnett's book store, 502 East Fifth street. Well, maybe you can. "We don't really want to sell it," said Walter Bonnett, son of proprietor Harold Bonneft. They have a volume I, number one of "The Complete Story of the Daring Exploits of the One and Only Superman," too. That dates to 1939 and sells for $60. The original Walt Disney comic (1940), with Donald Duck on the cover, is available for $30. "We've got quite a few $10 ones. That's about as much as most people will go," said Harold Bonnett. "I've been here over 30 years and built up quite a collection. This comic book collection craze started about 10 years ago, I guess." When his son returned from the service a year ago, he began exploring his father's gold mine and answering the requests, mostly from out of town, from collectors. "Right now the hot thing is Marvel Comics" said Harold. "This is the age of super-heroes I guess. And Marvel has them-the Fantastic Four, Thor and Captain America.

Hey! It's been a minute. Lots of memorializing this weekend. Around here, the memories never seem to cease... here's a bit of our Hall of Fame, a couple of vintage Jet magazines, new stories about Lovecraft's old ones, a bestseller, an old parish cookbook, and an '80s TV tie-in! Don't forget, we've got vintage comics, movies, and a whole lot more!

what is the men's equivalent of the universal standard basic t shirt? that is: high quality, won't wear out after a few washes, available in beautiful colors. im asking for my husband. bonus points if they come in teal because i think that really brings out his eyes

@nora
I'm a fan of Gildan shirts for quality and colorfastness. Honestly, I don't know if they're available individually. Maybe only bulk?

I know the brand from concert t-shirts & this is our official store shirt on Gildan, screenprinted by World of Strange Tees (worldofstrange.com). The first run was black. Mine is still very black. This color is called Berry. I plan to match the nearly teal blue of title on my next order. 🙂👍

A couple of recent arrivals. I'm a bit distracted so, I haven't any commentary at the moment – these vintage covers simply caught my eye. We have books of all types; something for nearly everyone. If you find yourself on our street, stop in for a look around!

Sex & relationship advice in the 1970s was vastly superior to that of the '50s, which were better than the '30s... We should know. We've been here the whole time!
These seem a little mansplain-ish by today's standards, & probably so. Still useful, though. Maybe good for laughs!

Let's see what a $25 PC 8801 mkii looks like. It came wrapped in a Japanese newspaper, it has the cardboard drive inserts and most of the plastic port caps. All of which are good signs. 😁 At some point it had an expansion card that is no longer with the system. #retrocomputing #pc88 #nec

Same computer from the back. Various ports and expansion connectors are visible.

@ipxfong reminds me of my 1st PC, an old 8088 – a used Goodwill find that I had to slowly upgrade, learning all the while. I miss those days. Good luck! 👍

There's a pleasure in reading a rough old pulp paperback. Will new books, with generic graphics on "immortal" acid-free paper catch the interest of a reader 3 or 4 generations hence?

Older books instantly transport a reader into their stories. Texture makes the world feel real, organic, and lived-in, the art gives you a clue what's in store, & they absolutely grab your attention!

Our shop has a large toy collection–Not for sale. The collection is great for 3D photos!

Open this image full screen. Cross your eyes until the left and right Pinocchio merge in the middle. It will seem like there are 3 pictures instead of two. The middle will be 3D!
Enjoy!

This microscope lens for my camera is one of the coolest things I've ever made.

Anytime I find a tiny bug in my place I get my mind blown.

Case in point: Can someone help me identify what it is that I found? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.

Found in Raleigh, NC.

A top-down view of the same insect showing the spikes. There are two rows of four yellow spikes, while all the rest is dark gray or black.

A gif showing various individual photos of the same insect taken from the front, with different parts of the insect in focus.

The front door of my shop was inundated with these things last summer; thousands of them all around the entrance. I let them be. Customers didn't seem to mind. I cleaned away their husks when they were done. I found them June 27th and I think they were done by about July 5th. They were all the way to this column, on the door, up the other side of the door, and all over the storefront. Our neighbors on either side were virtually untouched, but their fronts are mostly glass.

I have a soft spot for books in matched sets. It's said these riffed on James Bond–An
American art historian/collector uses his job as cover, & pays for his hobby performing hits for a secret gov't org.

The Eiger Sanction was also a 1975 mountain-climbing action film produced, starring, & dir. by Clint Eastwood, who did most of his own stunts.

The tale of Bonnett's Books goes back to 1939 with our founders, Ruth & Harold Bonnett. Grandpa Harold's 111th birthday would've been May 12th. He earned money to start the business by writing detective short stories for pulp-fiction magazines. One story made it into the cream-of-the-crop mag, "Black Mask." Later, his publisher connections in NYC led to the filming of his story, "Satan in High Heels," released in 1962. He guided the shop 60+ years, passing in late 2005. Happy Birthday, Grandpa!
