Frankly, I don’t see this a a problem as long as the software is up to date and the hardware is sound. I bet there are thousands of SPARC servers out there processing data 24/7 since 1995.

There is no engagement algorithm; it’s us :)

Where's the feel of the old Internet gone, and what sites do you use?

Hey all. Since the Internet has just been boiled down to the main big social media sites, it feels like the magic is gone. Whens the last time someone said to you "hey check out this cool website"? It's always the same: TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, FB, Reddit, Discord. Forums are basically dead. Chat rooms are dead. Message...

Yo, a couple years ago I had become fed up with the state of the modern Internet, and I started looking for alternatives. This is what I have found so far:

  • Gopher protocol (sdf.org is pretty active)
  • Gemini protocol (Modern version of gopher)
  • Shared UNIX systems (also called tildes) sdf.org is great!
  • RSS
  • IRC/Matrix to chat with people
  • Session messenger to chat with family
  • BBSes via syncterm
  • wiby.me and marginalia.nu search engines to find personal web sites
  • oldavista.com to browse the 'Old Net’
  • Web forums
  • Neocities
  • Webrings (They still exist!)
  • Lemmy (This is a new one)

The next step for me will be to build my own personal site. The only way to keep the independent web alive is to participate in it.

I use Session because it doesn’t require a phone number.

no alcohol or drugs: I quit drinking a year ago. I’ve saved a LOT of money. In my case, it was a crutch.

Food-wise, I eat very little meat. If I do, I eat pork liver, chicken hearts/gizzards. Offal basically. Fish can be cheap if you buy it flash frozen or canned. Peanut butter, bananas, and grapes are cheap. Instead of bread, I make my own flat bread.

Depending on your situation, most of your issues can be avoided by not owning a smartphone. It’s extreme (by today’s standards, at least), but it does work. I ditched my smartphone back in 2017 for a cheap flip phone. I can find spare parts on eBay easily. My car is older, so there is no SaaS crap in it. If I need to keep in touch with someone, we can use SMS, call each other or meet in real life. I use a Linux laptop for banking/browsing the web and I keep a physical GPS in my car in case of emergency.

and I agree with you. Privacy is pretty much gone already.

It was a good episode, but there are a few things I didn’t like:

  • Blowing up a space refinery on a whim.
  • Too much romance/interpersonal stuff, still.
  • Pike needs to grow a spine and be more assertive.

I give it a 6/10; not bad, not great. I’m looking forward to the new episode.

Most Americans favor restrictions on false information, violent content online (www.pewresearch.org)

65% of Americans support tech companies moderating false information online and 55% support the U.S. government taking these steps. These shares have increased since 2018. Americans are even more supportive of tech companies (71%) and the U.S. government (60%) restricting extremely violent content online.

Linux Mint’s software manager is not bad.

I keep a GPS in my car in case of emergency, but I try to plan my trips ahead by memorising landmarks on OSM. As a species, we are losing our navigation skills.

I’ve noticed this too. Most of the stuff on Reddit’s frontpage has an angry undertone. Anger = Engagement.

Same here. Mandrake 8.2 was a buggy mess, but I have fond memories of it.

Fail fast, fail often. They have handled the issue like bosses. This project is going places.

The Evolution of Cyberpunk Literature

I've compiled a timeline of cyberpunk books that, in my opinion, represent significant shifts in the genre and its ideas. Whether it's the early explorations of AI and dystopian futures, the emergence of virtual reality, or the more recent reflections on environmental and social issues, each book on this list adds a unique...

I have to give Neuromancer another shot. I tried reading it a couple times, but the words just don’t make sense.

P.S I’ve just finished Snow Crash. Good read, but the whole YT/Raven stuff was weird.

Serious question: What is your opinion on avoiding arguments altogether? The older I get, the less I feel like arguing.
