I really want to ditch Google, but DuckDuckGo aint there my brother.

It may work for some simpler/lazy searches, but for real stuff, nah.

The “good” thing is that Google search is going the way of Amazon, so with Google shooting themselves in the foot and DDG catching up a bit, maybe soon they’ll level

Im sorry, noob here. I don’t know what the voltage at the reset pin would be when the capacitor is discharged, my first guess would be 0v but the answers there say it’s the reverse - VCC at power on, then goes to gnd as it charges.

If that’s the case, I think it’s exactly what I need.

I’ll test it out later today (and I’ll go read more about how this capacitor+resistance circuit works…).

Kentucky woman sues state over abortion ban so she can terminate her pregnancy (www.kentucky.com)

A Kentucky woman Friday filed an emergency class-action lawsuit, asking a Jefferson County judge to allow her to terminate her pregnancy. It’s the first lawsuit of its kind in Kentucky since the state banned nearly all abortions in 2022 and one of the only times nationwide since before Roe v. Wade in 1973 that an adult woman...

You’re a hypocrite and a liar.

Let me tell you why: Infant mortality (live births that died under 1 year of age) in the US rose by 3% in 2022, increasing for the first time in 20 years from 5.44 per 1000 live births in 2021 to 5.60. (data from the CDC)

Comparing with Europe, you let almost twice of your babies die.

I’m talking about real babies here, babies whose fathers have held them in their arms, changed their diapers, sang them lullabies… And you let them die.

Why is infant mortality in the US the highest of any industrialised nation?

Two reasons: because maternity care in the US is utterly appalling, and because you limit access to abortion. Read more.

You don’t care about children. You care about controlling women. Land of the free allright…

I fully agree with this comment, and yet I feel personally attacked.

I need to know where this is, I’m sure I’m going to come across a door with this rune

ByteJunk,
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. The comparison isn’t with farmers, its with the processed food industry that do every single thing they can to have you stuffing your face with their products.

I played it as part of Xbox live, paid $20 for 2 months. Ended up playing a lot more of Senua Sacrifice than I did Starfield.

That price is very acceptable, almost a convenience fee that I gladly pay so I don’t have to look for torrents and stuff.

I would never pay the hyperinflated prices that are being asked for AAA nowadays, especially for digital copies that, as PlayStation is keen to teach us, are worthless.

No way. I could see 20 in heavy city use and loaded, but 30 to 40 mpg is fairly standard.

In the Hamas/Israel war, why does Palestine have "hostages" but Israel has "prisoners"?

This occurred to me while listening to the news. When they exchange people it’s always hostages for people held in Palestine and prisoners for people held in Israel. Why is that? Is it just perception or is there a practical difference?...

ByteJunk,
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

This isn’t the reason, it doesn’t matter if Hamas accuses them or not.

They’re considered hostages because Hamas wants to release them in exchange for something.

Israel imprisons Palestinian as a punishment or to achieve specific goals that are not met by releasing them (like preventing political prisoners from engaging with society).

I don’t think either term is morally superior to the other, but they do have some different connotations…

"Super pigs" — called the "most invasive animal on the planet" — threaten to invade northern U.S. (www.cbsnews.com)

An exploding population of hard-to-eradicate “super pigs” in Canada is threatening to spill south of the border, and northern states like Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana are taking steps to stop the invasion....

ByteJunk,

Can’t this be solved in a way where we get tons of super bacon?

ByteJunk,

From the outside, this story plays out like a bunch of snivelling family members of a lottery winner who plotted to steal all his money and throw him out, because he’s “not candid”.

The rest of the family, who also lived with the guy, clearly don’t agree and are now demanding that the thieves turn themselves in.

I mean, sure they may even have real reasons to kick him out, but man did they fuck this one up…

ByteJunk,
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

The analogy isn’t about stealing money, it’s about kicking the dude from the house.

I could believe that they thought they had good reasons for it, but they’ve done such a bad job of explaining them that even their own employees aren’t buy it, as per original article.

At least they got support in this thread, got to count for something.

Interesting rabbit hole.

Looks like in Europe you can’t tow that much with a car. Anything over 3500kg (7700lb) you need a proper truck and a trucker’s © license.

A Silverado 3500 at 7000lb is really close to needing a truck drivers license, even without a trailer.

I’m resigned that manual transmissons are a thing of the past, but man, it’s such a huge part of the enjoyment of driving for me.

Getting that perfect shift, especially if accelerating quicky or going up a steep hill is just so satisfying… Or the “minigame” of balancing the clutch and throttle from a full stop uphill without using the handbrake… And that feeling when you smoothly downshift going down a road and the revs pick up, while you ease up on the brake…

Yeah I really like driving.

ByteJunk,
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, this is fact, no arguments here.

But it doesn’t feel this way though, because new cars kinda… crumple… in a crash.

I get that it’s how they protect the driver, by deforming and absorbing the energy instead of just thrusting all into the occupants, but really makes them feel flimsy, compared to those olds hunks of steel.

I’d rather be alive in a crumpled wreck that dead in a barely dented tank though.

Google and major mobile carriers want Europe to regulate Apple's iMessage platform (www.engadget.com)

The long fight to make Apple’s iMessage compatible with all devices has raged with little to show for it. But Google (de facto leader of the charge) and other mobile operators are now leveraging the European Union’s Digital Market Act (DMA), according to the Financial Times. The law, which goes into effect in 2024, requires...

ByteJunk,
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

The EU won’t leave Apple alone, that’s the whole purpose of the Digital Markets Act (prevent “gatekeepers” from excluding other players).

The irony here is that Google is throwing stones when they have huge glass roofs. This law will certainly bite them back elsewhere, hopefully. We need strong laws to curb these modern day robber barons.

Dozens of health organizations pledge ‘full support’ for federal ban on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars (www.cnn.com)

ByteJunk,
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

We definitely need laws regulating salt intake, that much will kill you bro.

ByteJunk,
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, I know. Which is why I pointed to the example that is actually relevant, as the EU passed this exact law years ago.

But I don’t suppose you troubled yourself with that, and I get it. Going down that road might actually force you to reconsider your perspective at some point, or alternatively, deal with a massive and inconvenient cognitive dissonance, so instead you chose the safe path and stick to your cautionary tale because it validates your reasoning, if we just ignore for a moment the fact that it’s irrelevant regarding this specific instance and a better source was available to educate us about the effects of this legislation.
