Update on the plant specimen slides. Tap water was, unsurprisingly, a bad idea. Dried out leaf got rehydrated, healthy sample rotted.

Going to go the same route that I use for fixing cells at work. Except this time I'm going to try a mix of hairspray and distilled water. I've also heard elmer's spray glue works. Incubate for 10 min then an hour then let air dry, etc.

Not sure if the distilled water will damage the plant cells but also distilled is the closest I'll ever get to de-ionized water.

Today I learned that somehow the west-facing window is the one that fuckin baja blasts the plants with sunlight ALL day, but the south facing window has only shaded and filtered light and only for a couple hours a day. The exact opposite of what the internet told me to expect.

Me thinks this is why the coleus got burnt. Oh well, I'll just line that window with succulents and cacti :ablobowo:

For the labs youve been in, who writes the grants for the lab? (not grants for individual people, the ones for the whole lab)

  • PI only: PI does all the substantive work with figures and maybe some copy editing from lab
  • PI mostly: PI does most of the substantive work but will labmates will draft significant text and figures too
  • Shared within lab: PI structures and leads, but work of writing is shared with labmates as equal partners

@jonny I feel like maybe our lab is doing something wrong because my PI makes this one post doc write and apply for ALL the grants and oh boy is he really stressed 24/7 because of it.

Yeah its rough, he's also responsible for training me and like 2 different projects.

Anyways ik my original comment was off-topic but man am I glad I found your post bc I completely forgot PIs usually write grants. Also had no clue that it wasn't normal to make one person write all the grants.

you know if I'm gonna be honest our PI actually has no business at all with the lab. She's busy running the department and her own clinic.

I handle all clerical and financial duties, post doc handles grant writing, and we both handle mouse husbandry. There's only 3 of us in this lab besides the PI, me, grant writing post doc, and one other post doc. This is on top of research projects. We all do our duties bc, well, jobs are hard to come by here and no one wants to get blacklisted.

wait a what? ghost lab? what's that?
My official title is lab technician 2, although I have my own research project and I'm being trained to do proper research since grad school didn't really teach me much (I got my master's during the first year of COVID in NYC)

Anyways I did attempt to get reclassified (better job title and pay) but I have to submit hours to do that and I don't actually work 40 hours a week because... I don't actually have 40 hours of work, plus disabilities

Nah ur good dw. It's a weird situation bc my PI wants everyone to have the same workaholic drive she has, and things get ugly when she finds out at lab meetings that I'm not doing 23462436542524 things at once during the week. Like ma'am all my work is exposure and analysis or assay development. It's a lot of waiting or reading. What do u want me to do.

I could do more but that just leads to migraines and worsening my chronic fatigue. Anyways I wish I got paid a liveable salary :(

@smitten look there's a reason why we affectionately call it the "hellsite." A lot of us were prepared to stay until the site went down in flames because its just what we know and love. Also its like one of the last few "popular" sites that has a chronological order feed. But yknow its kinda hard to stay when the CEO calls for legal action against a transfem and starts banning trans women en masse. Anyways yeah that site was lowkey dying out

@revengeday I just left tumblr after being there for 10 years. It goes a bit further than that. Tumblr admin refuses to do anything about the rampant amount of terfs and nazis on the platform. Said terfs often mass report transfem blogs which gets the blogs banned and they're rarely reinstated. Predstrogen/Avewy (the blog at the center of the issue) has been tumblr admin's punching bag for about a year or two now. CEO threatened to call the FBI on predstrogen
