I have just learned that Andrew Lincoln’s daughter is named “Matilda Clutterbuck,” and it might be greatest name I’ve ever heard.

Chris,

@hotdogsladies This seems about right for Ian Anderson’s granddaughter.

Shoutout to @cassey for her excellent post about using Airtable with !

I'm helping a friend build out some new features for his business's existing Eleventy site and Airtable seemed like the right tool for the job. Thanks for doing the hard work for me!

This evening I finally had a cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory and I can unreservedly say that, of all the cheesecakes I’ve had in my life, it was definitely one of them.

Chris,

@Meyerweb With a name like The Cheesecake Factory, it makes sense that their cheesecakes would taste like they were made in a factory.

So here's my little data point on the much discussed enshitification of Google Search.

I just randomly wondered today if Roy Rogers and Tim Horton were ever at all involved in the still thriving franchises that bear their names.

So I want to Google this:
"Was Tim Horton involved in operating restaurants."

Google does shit-autocomplete and suggests this:

"Was Tim Horton involved in Roy Rogers’ death?"

That's only slightly less ridiculous than wondering if Julius Caesar caused my friend's cancer.

Google loves itself some QAnon. How did we get here?

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

@sysop408 So to fill in where the robots fail… I actually just ate at a Roy Rogers less than a month ago. It was really good, and they had a sign with the history of the franchise — so I can say yes, he was involved.

This was actually on my eclipse trip, which took me to far upstate New York, so I also had Tim Horton’s, but sadly I didn’t encounter any historical data.

Let’s do this

Chris, to random
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

Zoom finally updated their Mac app's design. It's an improvement, but they used a hexagon instead of an octagon as a "stop sign," and it's going to drive me insane until they change it again in like 10 years.

Also, why is there an X inside of it? A stop sign already means stop. It's like they couldn't decide on an icon, so they used two.

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

@cassey Two years old and still can't tell a hexagon from an octagon?? Time for some remedial classes, I'd say!

Is there a Rare Bird Alert account on mastodon anywhere? Because I could read about things like this all damn day.

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

@mathowie I’m super casual when it come to birding, but I’d love this. I actually spotted a rare bird a few years ago, a vagrant painted bunting near DC, and it caused a commotion among the more serious birders. The Washington Post wrote an article about it, but they credited the god damn Swiss ambassador with spotting it.

Reading this blog post from @dries (creator of Drupal) about the post-pivot definition of Jamstack.

https://dri.es/the-new-old-jamstack-and-mach-journey-towards-traditional-cms-concepts

Dries rightly notes that Jamstack 2.0 shares more in common with monolithic/traditional stacks.

For me—I read this as a huge indictment of the broadened definition—it’s not a healthy evolution of the term if we must sacrifice technical clarity and simplicity to do so.

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

@zachleat @dries My work is building a medium-ish site using Next.js/Sanity with Algolia and Salesforce integrations to replace our 2007 vintage Coldfusion site.

We've had least four developers on it the entire time. I could have built 90% of this single-handedly with Drupal in about a year. We just spent a ton of effort basically recreating Drupal's Views.

The end result will be nice, but I can't wait for the retro where I get to mention I originally proposed using Drupal.

A terrible pattern that has crept up in web, desktop, and mobile apps these days is when you click or tap on text that should be interactive/editable, and some other thing pops up instead.

  • Arc browser does it with their URL bar.

  • Tailwind gives me one more reason to dislike them with their search

  • Google does it with their mobile search

It's bad because you're looking at text and intending to do something and then some other thing jumps out of nowhere, causing a distraction.

Tailwind
Google

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

It's probably not terribly hard to make this suck less. Just transition the original thing into the other thing.

A semi-playable Doom demo I built for using CSS scroll timeline, a handful of checkboxes and has() selectors + a nice assist from image-rendering: pixelated.

Oh and no JS, as god intended.

"Hey it looked great when we tested it with a bunch of correctly cropped placeholder images!"

Chris,
@Chris@mastodon.social avatar

If you don't know what's going on here, every image is a different shape, but a lazy developer just threw a border radius on a square image without any limitations on what could be uploaded or selected. Later, somebody uploaded the real images supplied by the people, and did nothing to crop them.

I'm also going to assume that all this started with a silhouette of a profile photo and a whole bunch of lorem ipsum text.

I bought a Wirecutter pick TCL TV. I’ve been working on setting it up for at least 45 minutes. I have no choice but to enter my Google account details, and it’s had to go through multiple update processes. I’m so fucking mad. What a piece of shit. I can’t wait until this thing is done so I can block it from my WiFi. I don’t even trust that it will not save my credentials if I disable it.
