Indonesia is moving its capital to Kalimantan island. And now,

" may have to consider relocating its capital because of rising sea levels.

Bangkok’s city government is exploring measures that include building dikes, along the lines of those used in the Netherlands, he said.

But “we’ve been thinking about moving”, Pavich said, noting that the discussions were still hypothetical and the issue was “very complex”."

Israel is starting to crack under pressure by the US and the IDF and proposing to have Palestinian Authority members staff the Rafah crossing, but it's still on copium and wants them to pretend to be members of a local aid committee, to avoid broadcasting that there's collaboration between Israel and the PA. Mahmoud Abbas, wisely, is saying that he wants this to be official. https://www.axios.com/2024/05/13/israel-palestinian-authority-rafah-crossing

@Alon Why are they so opposed to even the appearance of collaboration with the PA?

@Alon Honestly, from the outside, (2) seems like a decent outcome, but I guess over there it's considered an embarrassment or a loss of sovereignty or something?

Something I don't get about is that I'm typing my own password into a wireless access point controlled by another university.
Is it just inertia that has prevented it from moving to a web-based SSO process where I log in to my own university's website, and they pass a signed token on to the institution I'm connecting to eduroam from?

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp I don't think it's possible to do web-based authentication using 802.1X? The web-based authentication that's used in cafes is often open wifi that just redirects connections until you log in, and I believe that has implications for encryption and security.

I'm going to tell you two statements, each made by YouTube about a video I uploaded:

a) it was uploaded 1 year ago.
b) it was uploaded on 5th June 2022.

Could these statements both be about the same video?
If so, are they both accurate?

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp They are both accurate even if about the same video, because 2022-06-05 is between 1 and 2 years ago (as of 2024-05-10). A child born on that day is considered a 1 year old, for example.

@Alon German mayoralities are prop-rep right? So the hypothetical NY version of that would probably be an Adams/Garcia coalition, and less likely to have these autocratic impulses, just by the nature of the coalition.

Are there good histories of the origin of the social democrat/green split? Because these days those parties are extremely similar throughout Europe (and in the Netherlands they just merged), and generally they prefer to govern with each other when possible.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @DiegoBeghin @BenRossTransit I think anyone can make their case in a close election, if they would have helped as the leader or not, but Greens got 15% and SPD got 25%. Like 1/8th of the combined SPD/green vote would have flipped? Sounds unlikely to me.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @Colinvparker @DiegoBeghin @BenRossTransit Isn’t Scholz a big step up from Schröder? Or is this about the Berlin SPD leader (which politics is too far removed for me to worry about)?

@Alon Obviously this is very expensive, but curious how the expected time-to-completion and spending rate (e.g. dollars per month) would compare to some of the international examples. They are expecting completion by 2036 (12 years from now), which seems long to me, so maybe some of the excessive cost is just working slowly and being at the mercy the of the salary*time equation?

RT @streetsblogkea Having feelings about the secretary of transportation applauding "America's first high speed rail project" not for providing alternatives to driving/flying, but for … giving people who work on it money to put "a new car or truck in the driveway."

Feeling #1: I get, politically, this kind of framing is sometimes necessary to get rail projects funded. Feeling #2: makes me nervous for future projects that might more meaningfully challenge automobility.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@capntransit @streetsblogkea I think the problem with Pete as the Secretary of Transportation is that he's too good at the politics of it. Like, he wants a higher office, he wants to be a politician, he's good at those things... but actual transportation policy is just not that high-priority in most voter's minds, so you get stuff like this.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @Colinvparker @capntransit Yeah and I wish we had a secretary of transportation to try to address those issues and promote non-car options, but somehow we’ve turned that role into a sinecure to be offered to protégés and prominent senator’s wives.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @Colinvparker @capntransit Fair, it’s not quite an ambassadorship to a tiny island. But the expectations of Pete on actual transportation issues are, what exactly? If he runs in the future will anything transport-related be a campaign issue? Now, maybe he has work to do day-to-day, IDK, but all I hear about are his TV appearances and speeches, in which he’s a general purpose Biden team member (and a good one!)

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @capntransit Well, what I wish we had for transportation was someone who didn't love the spotlight, and wanted to do low-key transit stuff that just made things better for non car-users. Because as soon as it's a "ministerial" role or whatever you want to call it, revolving around making speeches, then the kind of stuff Buttigieg is saying is inevitable. I don't doubt his political instincts on this, although I agree with you both that such rhetoric leads to bad outcomes.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@BenRossTransit @capntransit @Alon Part of what I'm saying, though, is that Buttigieg isn't necessarily a rival, he's an ally and protégé. But maybe that's not true?

@Alon @Colinvparker Annoying commenter, logging on 😏

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@DiegoBeghin @Alon Yes, the timed connections really reduce the number of vehicles required. But the price you pay is that, first, you need very rigid schedule adherence. Any delay and you add a 30 minutes (or 1 hour, on the return trip) wait to the above. And second, if you are transferring to a bi-directional corridor, you can only time the transfers at points where the corridor trains cross. So I think it works in a Swiss rail context, but I don't think it would necessarily work for buses connecting to metros in the way we have here.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@DiegoBeghin @Alon I think that that's broadly correct, yeah. On the other hand the existing network provides last-resort transit to a lot of destinations. Probably the lowest hanging fruit is running more trains, and increasing TOD near the stations, which is happening already but not yet aggressively. That and signal priority for buses.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @Colinvparker @DiegoBeghin I don’t think that’s really true. The Publix near Midtown MARTA is very walkable and has high rise residential nearby. Although maybe you won’t call it TOD because it’s too close to the core? Buckhead/Lenox… no TOD. West End… not really either, last I was there.

Meanwhile on the East/West there’s TOD at Edgewood/Candler and Avondale. East Lake I think was being planned too but died in the pandemic. You’d say why not King Memorial or Inman/Reynolds (?), but those are historic districts.

Pedestrian Observations: Frequency is Relative https://pedestrianobservations.com/2024/04/18/frequency-is-relative/

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon If the average trip is half the total length of service, this means you’d need four vehicles at a time in each direction, so with layovers either 9 or 10 vehicles in service per route at all times. That’s probably double or more the average here, so basically eliminating half the routes. Is that roughly the right math?

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @Colinvparker OK, so for long lines the number of vehicles in service would be even more. It’s just a very high level of service compared to anything running here, even at peak.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @Colinvparker Yeah, with buses is what I’m thinking, although, for example right now the tracker shows approximately 6 red line trains in service, so more trains is probably a good idea, although marginally I would prefer weekend service expansion if forced to pick.

Bus transfer timing is not good in their scheduling scheme, because most frequent service is pulsed at ~15 minutes but the trains aren’t regular enough, and while some buses have compatible 45 minute headways, others run on 40 minute headways, and then still others run at irregular intervals.

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @Colinvparker I’m not as familiar with the buses that depart from peripheral stations, they might be timed better because the transfers would be directional (which they aren’t necessarily in Midtown or on the Blue before Decatur).

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Alon @Colinvparker It’s 45 minute headways NB, and then I guess the layover is only at the southern end, so the SB headways are delayed by a variable amount, resulting in stuff like this, which I guess is basically admitting the buses will be delayed:

Here's a game inspired by @two_star's "reverse the list of integers" game.

Get from one integer to another by a sequence of moves. Valid moves are:

  • EXPAND: replace a number with an equivalent mathematical expression, e.g. 5 → 1+4
  • EVALUATE: replace an expression with its numerical value, e.g. 1+4 → 5.
  • SWAP: swap a mathematical operation for another one, e.g. 1+4 → 1×4.

I'll put an example game in the next toot

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp @jcastroarnaud In a very restrictive form of the game:

  1. Only positive integers, addition, and multiplication are permitted
  2. Multiplication by 1 (which is trivial) is disallowed

I believe that in this case 1,2,3, and 4 are in unique single element equivalence classes. 5 and higher integers are in an equivalence class via the relation (2+3)->(2*3), iterated as needed. The shortest move between higher numbers becomes a bit tricky to calculate?

Colinvparker,
@Colinvparker@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp @Colinvparker @jcastroarnaud No, in my restriction I’ve forbidden operation swap when any of the arguments is 1. But that may not even be enough to make finding a path hard, as I said in the next toot.
