What is the best way to commission art? I want like a logo or banner type thing for setting up a blog. You know something basic but much better than I can draw.

First and foremost though Iโ€™ll need to save up some money. This kind of thing I absolutely understand could be a few hundred bucks.

lieberal,
@lieberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@fivey the universe in A Fire Upon the Deep kind of works like that. Advanced computers can only operate in certain areas of the galaxy. Planets in the "slow zone" can only support primitive civilization. And solar systems can drift into the slow zone, resulting in their technology gradually becoming inoperable.

I think the filibuster is a big factor behind the persistence of the immigration debate in the US. Without the filibuster I think both sides end up enacting their priorities unilaterally when they have a trifecta. So you get an amnesty under the Democrats, and the Republicans pass a national e-verify and fund additional border security. I think the end result would be similar to proposed immigration compromises, but this way neither side has to worry about angering their base.

lieberal,
@lieberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Slyence They've tried, but they don't want to do that without pairing it with some form of legal status for existing undocumented immigrants, since otherwise like 4% of the workforce would be forced to try to find illicit employment.

lieberal,
@lieberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@archliberal the incentives for individual Republican legislators seem to encourage railing against any compromise rather than trying to sell a deal to their base.

SteveThompson, to Palestine
@SteveThompson@mastodon.social avatar

They lack educational historical roots for understanding the art of war and media propaganda. They are being bombarded with Hamas propaganda in mainstream media, gaming forums, and social media. That constant repetition is highly erosive.

"Large share of young American voters sympathize with Hamas, poll finds"

https://www.jpost.com/american-politics/article-783870

"43% of respondents aged 18-24 explicitly answered that in this conflict, they support Hamas more than Israel."

lieberal,
@lieberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@SteveThompson Ask stupid questions, get stupid answers. Hamas vs Israel is an artificial choice. Young people are answering Hamas because they see the suffering of Palestinian civilians, not because they sympathize with a terrorist group. I agree that there's a lot of naivete about Hamas.

I might be misunderstanding things because I haven't actually read the books in question, but I noticed something funny reading a review of David Graeber's works (https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/what-happened-to-david-graeber/). In The Dawn of Everything, he apparently presents the Huron chief Kandiaronk as giving an "indigenous critique" of European society and politics. But he's getting Kandiaronk's views from the work of the Frenchman Lahontan, who wrote a dialogue between himself and "Adario" the Huron chief.

lieberal, (edited )
@lieberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

And in that dialogue, it is extremely obvious that Lahontan is just using the Adario figure to present criticisms of Christianity and French society in a coded way. Like, the introduction of the 1905 English edition of Lahontan's New Voyages to North America calls the Adario dialogues a "bit of clever satire." I'm really not sure how you could read it and take it at face value.

lieberal,
@lieberal@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

Upon some further research (https://www.persuasion.community/p/a-flawed-history-of-humanity) David Graeber and his co-author David Wengrow are aware of all this, but insist that the Adario dialogues are real anyway? I don't know what to say other than that this is about the level of intellectual seriousness I would expect from a famous anarchist professor.
