CrypticCoffee,

Maybe just prevent MS merging or buying anything ever again until they fix shit. Ultimately, if their assurances aren’t worth shit, any case they put forward cannot be believed, and to the contrary, will likely be unreliable.

If you can, force them to split in certain areas.

CrypticCoffee,

Is it weird that the only celebrity who’s getting a public print of emissions is one that is despised by a political party for getting people out to vote?

I don’t really care much about her, but this feels like “how do we get young people to not listen to this person… ah, let’s go with emissions”.

YouTube’s video games are almost impossible to find – but once you do, you’ll wish you never looked | Dominik Diamond (www.theguardian.com)

I assumed I would boot up the app and there would be a big red button saying GAMES … but no. I have to sign up to PREMIUM. Then find the YOUR PREMIUM BENEFITS section. Then find EXPERIMENTAL FEATURES and select TRY EXPERIMENTAL FEATURES. Then find the TRY GAMES ON YOUTUBE part therein and tap on TRY IT OUT.

Building a brand new machine and leaving Windows for good

I’m sick of Windows, and especially what it’s become, and the way its trending looks like it will only get worse. I’ll be building a brand new PC this summer and want to choose a Linux Distro instead. In preparation, I’d like to try out a virtual machine with a Linux distribution. I am solidly familiar with Ubuntu, but I...

CrypticCoffee, (edited )

I use OpenSuse for gaming. A great distro.Highly recommend. An up to date kernel, stable and just works.

Had bad experiences with Manjaro so personally wouldn’t recommend.

CrypticCoffee,

Completely self serving though. Mobile is a personal data goldmine and Google gotta dig into that one way or another and if folks can contribute to that side with bug fixes, great.

How is everyone handling the 2FA requirement for GitHub? (docs.github.com)

Just wondering what people are using to meet the 2FA requirement GitHub has been rolling out. I don’t love the idea of having an authenticator app installed on my phone just to log into GitHub. And really don’t want to give them my phone number just to log in....

CrypticCoffee,

Codeberg, or failing that, GitLab, or BitBucket. Allowing MS to control all FLOSS software, means they might probably secretly get consent to use your code for copilot training without respecting licences. I have no idea if this happens, or might in the future, as I ain’t reading the terms of service for something I do not use, however, I have little trust for them enough for air on the side of caution.

We're Watching Facebook Die (www.wheresyoured.at)

In the first quarter of 2024, Meta made $36.45 billion dollars - $12.37 billion dollars of which was pure profit. Though the company no longer reports daily active users, it now uses another metric: “family daily active people.” This number refers to “registered and logged-in users of one or more of Facebook’s Family...

CrypticCoffee,

Which they could also report on. The fact they’re removing a standard metric they’ve relied on, rather than relegate it, shows they have fear this metric is going to be detrimental to publish. You can fairly safely assume it’s going to go down. It’s no longer sexy, tik tok is killing it, and most that would be on it, are, and are discovering it’s not greatly beneficial to them and spending less time on it. It is the start of the decline. How long and how fast is the thing we do not know.

Alternatives to Google Docs/sheets?

What are people using in place of Google docs/sheets/etc? I’m looking for a simple program that syncs with the cloud so I can access my documents on my different computers or my Android phone. I run Windows 10 (don’t crucify me). I use libre office for things that can stay on one computer, but for things like school notes,...

CrypticCoffee,

The privacy is not about protecting your data from crawlers, it’s about protecting your data from big tech.

CrypticCoffee,

Lemmy.world. why does that not surprise me?

CrypticCoffee,

Lol nah. But Lemmy world has a somewhat rude intolerant moderation policy and often users mirror that. There is good people on there, of course, but a reasonable percentage of folk who’d be at home on reddit and Xitter.

CrypticCoffee,

Isn’t Minecraft one of the biggest games on the planet? RimWorld simply awesome. Stardew selling millions…

Chasing top graphics hasn’t always been the route to success.

CrypticCoffee,

So they don’t believe in it, they’re just using it to win an election?

I assume this will go the same way as Kier’s leadership pledges. Out of the window when no longer convenient.

CrypticCoffee,

Same here. Dreadful name. Classic open source.

CrypticCoffee,

Happy to chip in, but not as sole mod. I ressurected the DeGoogled community on lemmy.ml and overseeing it since then.
