I love how so many people are like “these reviewers are paid off” and this guy’s like, “nah, it’s malpractice for a reviewer to actually give a bad review.”

A historically bad tech take that should be put in a museum.

I'm planning to add a setting to Dato to show free time between events. How should it be presented? This is my first take.

DavidAnson,
@DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

@sindresorhus Minor tweak to make it clear this is free time: “2 hours free”

Lots of people (including Apple) put full-color icons on each top-level row in Settings these days.

I'm experimenting with using monochrome SF Symbols there. I may not ship it this way, but it's kinda fun, and it lets me use the same icons that are used for the corresponding features throughout the rest of the app.

Maybe that improves consistency and understanding, especially since I don't currently have localized strings.

DavidAnson,
@DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment Unsolicited feedback: You got 6 circular things near the top there that are all visually kind of same-looking. Maybe add more shape variety (or color as others have commented).

craiggrannell, to Emulation
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

People defending owners of old gaming IP all day long. Look, I get it. And #emulation is often iffy. But imagine if other mediums were like gaming. 99% of music and film inaccessible unless you owned original hardware and original media, slowly degrading and liable to die at any moment. It’s insane that gaming is in the place it is. I’d long hoped for an ‘iTunes for MAME’ years ago, but no. The closest we’ve got to something remotely sensible is ‘Netflix for #retrogaming’ Antstream Arcade.

DavidAnson,
@DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell @flargh Well put! :)

DavidAnson,
@DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell @flargh I agree with your desire to maintain and preserve the rich history here! But it feels like you are kind of condoning this by defending it. The intellectual property owners have been very clear that they do not want their games stolen. We can debate the wisdom of that or even the wisdom of IP laws themselves, but taking the stance that “piracy is OK in this case because games are so important” does not feel right.

Soooooo what do we think about this reason for not including full text in a personal blog’s RSS feed?

TBH it bugs the hell out of me, but maybe I’m the minority here.

DavidAnson,
@DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

@matt Wait till this person learns about different user agents, default style sheets, mobile, high contrast, etc.... IMO, if you want your content to be more accessible to people, then publish the full text in the RSS feed.

Delta is still top of the US App Store. Pent…up…demand for great software not allowed on iOS for ages 😊

DavidAnson,
@DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

@matt It doesn’t feel like the best poster child is all. :) That said, it may still be far too early to draw conclusions either way.

DavidAnson,
@DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

@matt I’m curious about your comparison to a web browser, but understand if you don’t want to debate that here. :)

In my mind, an emulator like that exists to enable people to play copyrighted games they have often obtained through questionable means. Which is not the case for a web browser which just shows content on the web. Some of that content may have legal issues itself, but all of the content is specifically intended by its publisher to be displayed by the web browser.

DavidAnson,
@DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

@matt Everyone is pointing at this one (copyright-infringing?) app as proof of pent-up demand, but I think it would be more convincing if there were TEN new apps at the top of the list. Just a single new app feels like more of an anomaly than a confirmation.

I had a bad experience with npm-shrinkwrap.json recently. I read the documentation and took care, but it wasn’t enough. Based on that, my current opinion is that is unusable for its intended purpose. That seems absurd and I am happy to learn what I’m doing wrong. Here’s a brief summary:

@matt Per your post today about social media, it may be worth noting that Activity Pub is not supported by Threads. You wonder why they will support it, but it is possible they are only talking about that now for goodwill and decide they have enough members already that they don’t need to go through with that. Just an idea.

    @matt This looks very useful, thank you! My one comment after reading is that the misconceptions section feels to me like it is written for someone who has a Threads account as primary and the questions are answered in that context. If viewed by someone who uses Mastodon as primary, this may be a little bit harder to follow or even feel a little backwards? It might be interesting to call out the perspective somehow.

    DavidAnson,
    @DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

    @matt Actually, I guess you are very clear about that perspective in the title. It’s just me being a primary Mastodon person… :)

    We can ignore the particulars of the case: The idea that the EU threatens to wipe out almost a year and a half of Apple’s profit for the EU on a whim seems like a strong case for Apple to leave the EU. If they stay and that happens, the next fine is three years profit and seems designed to drive Apple out of the EU. Maybe if the rules were crystal clear and Apple felt like it could comply with 100% certainty, things would be different. But not like this.

    Apple just allowed emulators on iOS! Or did they? Not everyone agrees. https://birchtree.me/blog/apple-just-allowed-emulators-on-ios-or-did-they-not-everyone-agrees/

    DavidAnson,
    @DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

    @matt That is super interesting, thank you for the insights! For me (and this is a personal failing), I cannot embrace the idea that text prediction will lead to independent thought. Reading those responses with a critical eye, your question was about whether users could provide their own games and all 3 LLMs answered that it would be possible to download games. I think these are different topics. Their answers feel like restating the announcement while you asked something more nuanced.

    DavidAnson,
    @DavidAnson@mastodon.social avatar

    @matt The idea of asking an LLM to interpret a policy statement boggles my mind! The output is “yes” or “no” based on the next predicted token probability from… some combination of your prompt and Apple’s press statement? Does this produce meaningful responses?

    Obviously, the black rubber surface of a turf athletic field gets hot in the sun. Articles say around 50 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than surroundings. That seems credible. But how much hotter is it for players running around on top of the field? The following claim by NPR seems completely absurd to me: 1/

    Delta has finally been dethroned from the top spot on the US App Store, and it took a company giving you free donuts for installing their app to do it.

    @matt I’m ready for 100 new think pieces about how Apple’s terrible App Store policies have been squelching humongous customer demand for free donuts… :)
