Because some people here might just be shy, or cautious. I figured I should say this as a more explicit note of consent: If we're mutuals, absolutely feel free to talk lewd stuff with me~! :3

english should get smallification words like dutch so you can be like "henlo yas i would liek to have a breadje with cheemzies and a glassje milkies" and call your friends cutesy and smol by just adding je/tje to their names

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy Anthropje? Anthrotje? Your name isn't Dutch enough damn you ;p

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy Wait you added a whole bunch of letters to my name there x3 Are these just to connect my name to the suffix or do they mean things?

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy I can't even easily make the cute form of your name in German. It'd either be suffix -chen, which doesn't work, or suffix -ie which doesn't work either x3

watching fullscreen phone ads happen to people playing smartphone games is wild, like holy crap that is obnoxious, loud and in your face, how are you dealing with that 😭

@anthropy We call this conditioning and psychological manipulation targeted at forming habits. :3

What level of comfort towards cybernetics/implants do you have?

No opinion, I'm just curious. Feel free to comment with your (further) thoughts.

Doridian,

@anthropy I should note on my answer of "I'd go fully cybrog" this only applies if the device is fully open source and I have total control over it and no kind of cloud connectivity or whatver other stuff.
Nothing connects to my brain unless I can know exactly what it does

just a heads up since not everyone I talk with seems to realize this;

cans of 'PC duster' are more often than not actually poor quality canned butane/propane. This is why there's a 'flammable' sign on them. They really are flammable.
I really suggest to avoid using these on running PCs or whilst smoking 🧯

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy Should just be canned Ozone instead. More air than air! :v

RE: Zenhammer (see eg https://comsec.ethz.ch/research/dram/zenhammer/ ) rowhammer attacks on AMD

not to be weird about this but isn't anything pre-ddr5 vulnerable to this? hell even DDR5 despite having a full PSU onboard might still have this issue if you try hard enough. DRAM is just kinda inherently like that I guess, being essentially a field of lossy capacitors that quickly drain if you don't refresh their state enough times per second

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy I think servers mostly do that out of "well this thing boots once a year at most might as well take 5 minutes to make sure we don't boot with broken hardware". On your desktop that would be quite annoying x3

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy But on a lot of servers you can literally just turn that off and it'll boot way faster. Supermicro doesn't even run a full ram test by default at all.

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy Also keep in mind even desktop DRAM training takes quite a while. When you boot a CPU with lots of RAM for the first time it can literally take 5 minutes to POST. Just manufacturers learnt that you can just save those training values to NVRAM and reload them if no hardware change occured.

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy Yeah absolutely if you want to go to the limit of the hardware, you're gonna spend a lot of time manually DRAM training (setting the timings by hand)

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy I wonder if they'll ever be able to move the self-overclocking of modern CPUs to DRAM, so the DRAM can clock itself up if it thinks it has headroom. But can DRAM even change clock at runtime? Is that a thing people ever thought about or invented?

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy Yeah, Threadripper CPUs, everyone (I think even the manual?) tells you "on first POST it might take 15 minutes for you to see anything on the screen, this is normal"

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy And the only reason servers can show you a picture during DRAM training is, well, the GPU is also a full Linux computer usually, aka your BMC, so it can do the 7-segment Q-Codes via VGA :v

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy On Supermicro the BMC even has in the webui a page that just shows you the current POST code (That 2-digit hex code). And also the BIOS on Supermicro WILL output over serial via VT100 terminal commands

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy So you can use the serial-over-lan to open the BIOS and make changes

don't buy an RTL-SDR, it's only like 20$ and it'll get you down a whole rabbit hole and a half of buying ever better equipment to hear what's in the air and perhaps also eventually add to it, it doesn't even pose any danger and you don't need any license for it as long as you don't broadcast on license-requiring frequencies, don't do it it's super addictive and there's like zero barrier to entry and can be used with any device even linux or mac or android and such, the ecosystem is huge, don't--

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@anthropy Me and my HackRF would like to have a word with you as those rabbit holes pose a strong monetary risk <.<

Becuase of @ncommander 's streams of making a floppy-booting modern Linux happen.
And because I am a very ADHD person indeed, of course I made it build in Docker and run with FPU emulation, such that I can run it on the ao486 core on my MiSTer :D

https://github.com/Doridian/floppy-linux
(This is a total hack, but it can compile the entire thing from my M1 MacBook, which was difficult to do)

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@ncommander Yeah life comes at you fast somtimes. I'm sure this can still be tweaked, or taken an entirely different direction (I went with one floppy for kernel & minimal init + a second for the rootfs and also with a bootloader that just loads sector 3 and up as the kernel, no syslinux that uses FAT32).
I wonder how fun other constraints would be, such as "one floppy, total" (my constraint I applied to myself was "one floppy drive", and since the kernel floppy is no longer needed after boot...)
Or another constraint such as "use syslinux, but use DMF" (I right now constrained myself to stock 1.44MB, since, well, otherwise I'll have one more thing to think about.

I then build some really dumb cursed things ontop of it with 86Box. Like a 486 booting from floppy and mounting my NAS for NFS for extra storage...

Did I spend two hours trying to get SOL (Serial-over-LAN) working with the Supermicro IPMI tool so I can avoid using the Java KVM on my M1 Mac?

Yes. Yes, I did. XD

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@crashdoom I eventually bought an X10 Supermicro system, and the biggest thing that drove me to upgrade from X9 was the HTML5 KVM lol

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar

@philpem @crashdoom Yes, it is. It is even worse then Supermicro's KVM in that you need an old version of Java and to screw with even more security options

discord pro tip: open the dev tools and search for "Nitro" in the HTML and just delete both entries it gives you, until there's no more entries, bam no more missclicks and more real estate for your text, and if you want to go all out you can also search for 'shop' and delete that too! Careful with that one though because somehow the sidebar with servers also matches 'shop' 🤔

Or use something free and open like Matrix :v

I've also wondered about setting up a chat service based on MQTT 🤔 🤔

Doridian,
@Doridian@furry.engineer avatar
