either the official app or the official web-app. Those are the only two ways you should bother with it.

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

Maybe, but only if windows users continue to not learn how to use their PCs

Just because you know what the buttons do doesn’t mean you know how to use it.

They are if they have shitty security practices and never set up good security software

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

Only if the closed source black box has your information in the first place

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

Shitty security practices, and a lack of good security software is to blame for that

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

I agree with that, force microsoft to make windows open source.

With mullvad, proton or iVPN, just enable lockdown mode or what proton calls the “permanent” kill switch.

That should block all unprotected traffic with no issue

Edit, I used policy plus to delay my quality updates by 30 days and my feature updates by 365 days and a couple of days ago I paused my windows updates because I saw britec09 talking about how some of the more recent updates to windows 11 will cause bluescreens sometimes. So I’m not affected.

Good, now fine them for throttling people and selling all our other data without our consent

Windows Photos adds new Microsoft Designer integration (blogs.windows.com)

Today Microsoft is introducing the ability to send an image from the Photos app to Microsoft Designer, a cloud based graphic design app that helps you create professional quality social media posts, invitations, digital postcards, graphics, and new visuals with the power of generative AI. This update is available on Windows 11...

honeyview and irfanview are still better.

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

It’s not. Use signal messenger or session messenger instead.

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

Session? Session messenger?

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

Session comes with its own anonymity network…you sometimes need a VPN to access it, but still.

And even though there’s no quantum encryption on it yet. Whoever would try to use a quantum computer to break in would still need to use it for quite awhile on hundreds of different servers each processing thousands of different people’s traffic at any time.

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

Session is better because of the proxies

I certainly hope the future isn’t like that

Anyone else find this annoying? (sh.itjust.works)

That the labels for the apps get truncated so you can only read “Proton” plus the first letter of the app. I’m only able to distinguish based on the icons which isn’t great because Pass and Drive are similar colors, and Pass and VPN, and Drive and Calendar are similar shapes.

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

I don’t really have any apps on my home screens or my desktop pages.

I have them into groups on mobile and I just pull them up from the start menu on desktop

EmperorHenry,

So…is Standard Notes indie and owner-operated and owner-made like all the services from proton are?

why are they always trying to compete with apple in the worst ways possible?

If people want to use apple devices, they’ll just use apple devices.

Seriously if anyone from microsoft is reading this, ask yourself, why did so many people LOVE windows 7 and hate windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11? Windows 8 is where it started going off the deep end and now we’re at windows 11, where literally every change you’re making is causing more and more people to teach themselves how to use linux.

And now to salt the wound, you fuckers are blocking people from using third party apps to make their systems work the way they want them to.

That’s how you’re choosing to compete with apple? to make your OS as shitty as possible? To take as much control away from the customer as possible? Are you sure that’s the hill you want to die on? …Okay. Your funeral.

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

Or, as my brother-in-law often says when he’s frustrated with technology: “I don’t want to know how it works, I just want it to fucking work.” Lots of people consider computers to be just tools, like a hammer.

That kind of mindset needs to be a thing of the past. Not having the patience to figure out how things work is how every war in my lifetime got started.

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

I don’t understand why microsoft “felt pressure” at all.

People loved windows 7 and hated windows 8. But they kept doing more of what the customers hated over and over, and now they’re blocking people from using the work-arounds that make their systems usable for them.

we really need to have a revolution in every workspace and making everything a democratic worker-owned co-op

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

Proton is a very privacy-friendly thing to choose.

But if you’re in a position where you might need to worry about someone using a quantum computer to monitor your internet activity, you might want to choose a different VPN provider that offers quantum-secure encryption. Like Mullvad or iVPN.

EmperorHenry,
@EmperorHenry@infosec.pub avatar

I want them automatically backed up, that’s a huge point of appeal for me.

I understand, I guess my point was that the automatic backup isn’t actually doing anything on my phone either.

There isn’t a “best” antivirus.

There’s some that are really good at detection, and a very small number that are good at prevention.

Usually, detection also means prevention, unless we’re talking about norton and mcaffee, which sometimes don’t detect anything until after the malware has already done its damage.

Comodo firewall configured like Cruelsister recommends along with bitdefender free, kaspersky (any edition with the firewall turned off), or MSD with configure defender on MAX is pretty good. Covers everything between comodo FW and one of those other three.

But those three conventional antivirus programs might start sucking at some point down the line. for as long as I’ve been using it, comodo FW has always been a good choice to pick up the slack of whatever realtime scanner you choose.
