Feditext

@Feditext@mastodon.social

iOS and iPadOS client for Mastodon, Glitch, GotoSocial, Akkoma, Iceshrimp, and more! Maintained by Vyr @vyr and Brian https://gotgoat.com/@bdube.

Please DM this account to join the TestFlight beta program, as we're not yet in the App Store.

Feditext is a community continuation of https://mastodon.social/@metabolist's incredible work on Metatext, which is no longer in development.

Feditext beta users: today's version 1.7.2 build 106 fixes a regression with trailing hashtag de-emphasis introduced in the previous build. trailing hashtags should be smaller and dimmer again (if you have that feature on).

this build is recommended for all users.

a reminder: please turn on crash reporting as detailed in this post so we can track down Feditext crashes: https://mastodon.social/@Feditext/112214070060062156

Feditext beta users: GotoSocial announced their first 0.15 prerelease today, which includes filter support contributed by our very own Vyr.

Feditext version 1.7.2 build 101 improves filter UI by hiding the "Drop instead of hide" filter option when using a GtS instance, where it is not yet supported and won't work.

if you aren't using a GtS instance, you don't need to upgrade Feditext today.

for the record, Feditext supports iOS 15 and up. Vyr still keeps her old iPhone 6s Plus on her desk for real-device testing.

the oldest devices capable of running Feditext are:
• iPhone 6s / 6s Plus (2015)
• iPod touch (7th gen) (2019)
• iPad (5th gen) (2017)
• iPad Air 2 (2014)
• iPad mini 4 (2015)
• iPad Pro (2017)

Feditext,
@Feditext@mastodon.social avatar

@mjgardner not really, no. Feditext uses Swift structured concurrency and more SwiftUI than Metatext before it, but so far, iOS 15 and macOS 12 still have all the features we need, or close equivalents.

it helps that we don't pull in a lot of 3rd-party code, and what we do use is extremely broadly available: Feditext's major 3rd-party dependencies are SDWebImage (iOS 9+, iOS 13+ for SwiftUI) and GRDB (iOS 11+).

Feditext,
@Feditext@mastodon.social avatar

@mjgardner if we do implement future features that require newer OS versions, we'll try to gate them behind conditional availability, and older OSes will still be able to run the rest of the app.

at base, though, all Fedi clients are displaying short text messages with pictures and sometimes video. it's hard to imagine OS changes that would demand major upgrades, short of UIKit going extinct, which seems unlikely to happen any time soon.

Metatext now forever broken for hashtagging. The app instantly crashes trying to load hashtag autocompletes. Since the dev is MIA, Metatext is now broken.

Feditext,
@Feditext@mastodon.social avatar

@JackRacc Metatext is over as a project and the original author has retired from it. try Feditext instead. same codebase, new maintainers.

Feditext beta users: today's version 1.7.2 build 97 includes experimental support for Pixelfed instances, and is recommended for anyone with a Pixelfed account.

some bugs are expected. there's one currently known: deleting a status will succeed but result in an error, so deleting and redrafting is not currently possible. please file any other issues on our GitHub issue tracker.

@stux What's your favorite mastodon client?

Feditext,
@Feditext@mastodon.social avatar

@stux @Austin stux, you're still using Metatext? do you want a Feditext beta invite? it's the maintained version of Metatext. fixes a lot of bugs, adds a lot of missing features (like editing posts and receiving admin notifications).

Feditext,
@Feditext@mastodon.social avatar

@stux @Austin yep! Metabolist may have stepped down but the project's very much still alive. hoping to do the first App Store release of Feditext in the next few weeks.

Feditext beta users: today's 1.7.2 build 90 adds support for rendering superscript, subscript, and small text HTML tags to Siren.

this will not affect most people; upgrade whenever.

Feditext users: please follow https://github.com/feditext/feditext/issues/148 and https://github.com/feditext/feditext/issues/149 for complete native quote post support.

short version: we have a small set of bugs to fix and chores to do before an App Store release, and quote post UI will come after that, in version 1.8.

Feditext,
@Feditext@mastodon.social avatar

expect that to work on Treehouse, Akkoma, and some Misskey forks. vanilla Mastodon has yet to finalize a native quote post API but we'll try to support it when it arrives.

Feditext may end up including UI support for emulated quote posts, equivalent to just pasting in a link to the post, since that involves most of the same UI work as native quote posts.

Feditext,
@Feditext@mastodon.social avatar

context: Ivory announced UI for emulated quote posts and people are excited about quote posts again

Feditext beta users: today's 1.7.2 build 89 fixes a bug inherited from Metatext that would rapidly repeat searches when the end of search results was reached, usually resulting in the client being rate-limited by the instance within seconds.

https://github.com/feditext/feditext/issues/119

it also switches to ID-based paging for multiple pages of search results, which works with GotoSocial where the previous offset-based paging does not.

this build is recommended for everyone who uses search.

Mastodon / fedi clients should have an option to embed any entered alt text in the image EXIF tags where possible (assuming it's not) and another option to auto populate on attach if it finds prior.

Feditext,
@Feditext@mastodon.social avatar

@dannotdaniel Feditext already does this and was the first client to do it. we'd love to see this accessibility feature become universal!

when an image or video is uploaded, Feditext will populate the alt text field of the media attachment from the media file's metadata; when an image is downloaded, Feditext will populate the image file's metadata from the media attachment's alt text.

Feditext beta users: today's 1.7.2 build 84 fixes Siren's inability to render underline and strikethru text: https://github.com/feditext/feditext/issues/311

if you are not using Siren, this will not affect you; however, we recommend switching to Siren as the HTML parser in app preferences instead of WebKit, as it's much faster, especially on iOS 17. Siren will completely replace WebKit soon.

Feditext beta users: today's version 1.7.2 (build 83) fixes reporting posts when using a GotoSocial server, adds support for instance rules on GtS 0.12 and up, and fixes a rare visual bug with reporting on all platforms. this build is recommended for GtS users; if you use something else, you don't need to upgrade immediately.

I just want MetaText 1.7.1 with a tad more stability and an edit toot feature.

Am I off by waiting for @Feditext ?

@cs you're welcome to join the Feditext beta program, no wait currently necessary

Feditext dev plans for the end of January and the start of February:

  • categorize and prioritize new bugs
  • fix known issues with the new Siren formatter, switch to Siren permanently
  • investigate the media display bugs

with luck, that will put us in a state ready for App Store review.

Sharkey users: Sharkey didn't exist when we went into winter vacation hiatus, so we haven't tested Feditext against it yet, and it may not enable Firefish-specific features. please check the bug tracker for Sharkey bugs, and file new ones if you don't see a bug matching behavior you're seeing.
