Guenther_Amanita,

Thanks! I’ll do that too, thanks for the suggestion!

Guenther_Amanita,

It is in fact part of the launcher. You can change it in the settings of the homescreen and decide between a digital or a round version.

Has anyone seen the blurry decoration font problem (with Aurorae themes) resurface with Plasma 6? (lemmy.world)

This was fixed for me since 5.27 but it resurfaced with 6.0. Breeze/Lightly/etc are fine; it’s Aurorae themes with fractional scaling in Wayland that have the issue. Not sure whether it’s a bug or something left over from somewhere in my system.

Guenther_Amanita,

I sadly, and I don’t say this lightly, have to agree.
When first using KDE, I was totally baffled by the amount of themes you can download.

But I quickly learned, that most of them are either more than 5 years old, look ugly/ incoherent, or cause this blurriness issue OP mentioned.

For my taste, Breeze (or to a further extend, Lightly) looks phenomenal by default, especially since Plasma 6. I only change the color scheme a bit (usually just adaptive colors, based on wallpaper), but that’s it.

Guenther_Amanita,

Definitely! The only “good” 3rd-party themes are the ones from Jomada (Edna, Moe, Itchy, etc.) and from Vinceliuice (Graphite, Canta, Layan, etc.).
Those are well thought out, coherent and look professional.

If you scroll through the top ones, then you almost exclusively find ones that got their last update years ago, and now look extremely incoherent or buggy.
And even if you find newer ones, then they often lack the polish.
Man, it just sucks…

But hey, maybe there is just not that much demand anymore, because the defaults look great nowadays?

Deadly morel mushroom outbreak highlights big gaps in fungi knowledge (arstechnica.com)

On Thursday, Montana health officials published an outbreak analysis of poisonings linked to the honeycombed fungi in March and April of last year. The outbreak sickened 51 people who ate at the same restaurant, sending four to the emergency department. Three were hospitalized and two died. Though the health officials didn’t...

Guenther_Amanita,

I wouldn’t even eat raw button mushrooms like you suggested.

In the best case, they can’t be broken down by our bodies, so all the nutrients wander through us and get wasted.
In the worst case, the agaritine found in them, which easily gets destroyed by cooking btw, may get classified from suspectedly carcinogenic to carcinogenic.

Linux distro for selfhosting server

So I have been running a fair amount of selfhosted services over the last decade or so. I have always been running this on a Ubuntu LTS distribution running on a intel NUC machine. Most, if not all of my services run in a docker container, and using a docker compose file that brings everything up. The server is headless. I...

Guenther_Amanita,

Debian. I don’t see much benefit of Ubuntu LTS compared to plain old Debian. It’s exactly what you wanted.

Alternatively, AlmaLinux is a good choice if you like Red Hat stuff (RHEL clone), but the difference between Ubuntu LTS and Debian would be almost not noticeable for you I think.

Guenther_Amanita,

Debian is community run, which often means all changes and features get implemented because the community wants that, not some corporation. One notable example of that is Snap.

Also, I found (minimal install) Debian a bit more minimalist than Ubuntu server, which is great imo. I just want the bare minimum for my services to work, and pretty much the only thing I expect from my server to have is SSH and Docker.

Planning on moving over from Windows 10 to Linux for my Personal Work Station. Can't decide which OS I should switch to.

Windows has been a thorn in my side for years. But ever since I started moved to Linux on my Laptop and swapping my professional software to a cross platform alternative, I’ve been dreaming on removing it from my SSD....

I would also recommend checking out Distrobox, especially for DaVinci Resolve. This decouples your programs from the host OS, which allows you to run DVR on any distro and get the newest software, containerised on Debian for example.

I personally am a huge fan of Fedora Atomic, especially uBlue. It’s almost the same as regular Fedora, but way more reliable and with a new concept in mind. uBlue already has Distrobox pre-installed.

Help deciding Os

Hi, I’m learning python and I have purchased a 2015 MacBook air. I want to install Linux on it (Ubuntu) but my friend who’s a developer told me to leave the MacOs because they are similar as operative systems. What do you think? Should I change the os and switch to Linux? Thanks. Edit: thank you for your replies. There are...

Guenther_Amanita,

Depends. Are you happy with MacOS and want to stay in the Apple ecosystem?
If yes, then just keep it. It is perfectly tailored for your hardware.

If you are annoyed by it or want to try out something new, then try Linux.
The 2015 MBA has a Intel CPU afaik and general hardware support should be fine from what I’ve heard.

Instead of Ubuntu, I would recommend Fedora, either the Gnome or KDE variant. If you prefer minimalism and the coherence/ well-thought-outness of MacOS, then use the Gnome (“Workstation”) variant, and if you prefer customisability, then the KDE-spin.
You could also take a look at the Atomic variants, they are a newer concept with a few benefits (and also drawbacks) compared to the regular versions.

As a small tip: no matter if you decide for the mutable or the atomic versions, use Distrobox! While Python is pre-installed, it is a system dependency, and you wanna keep your dev environment isolated from your host OS. If you wanna change the Python version for example, this might otherwise brick your install.

Guenther_Amanita,

I wouldn’t call Linux a “not quite pain-free experience”.
IMO, the experience has been dramatically improved in the last 2 years or so, and the only pain for most people is just that it’s a new OS with new workflows and approaches.
Or what would you call painful?

Just as a background, I’m no IT-guy, just casual user who’s into this weird OS :D

Guenther_Amanita,

That all sounds great, thanks!
Do you have any tips for an “easy” start, where everything is already pre-configured?

Guenther_Amanita, (edited )

Thanks! I saved the comment for later.

What advantage do you see in Nix compared to Distrobox?
I personally enjoy DB because of its simplicity.
I just open BoxBuddy, create a new container from the dropdown-list, and then just start using my Debian or Arch container on top of Fedora Atomic for example.

The two main benefits I see in Nix are the reproducibility and the big repo. But in case of the repository size, Debian and Arch (+ AUR) are extremely big aswell.
Are there any other big benefits, that I can’t get with Distrobox, but with Nix?
Just as a small side note, I’m no power user and tend to use my PC more like a casual guy.

Guenther_Amanita,

Thanks for your great explanation!
How up-to-date are the packages, compared to Flatpaks?

IIRC, I used Nix a while ago to install a program, which was supposedly hard to build for Linux and crashed all the time as Flatpak. Sadly, the Nix version was almost a year old and also not great.

But I think I’ll take a look into it again. I began using terminal apps a lot more and also became a huge fan of image based distros, and I think Nix packages have similar benefits as immutable distros.

Guenther_Amanita,

Understandable.

I personally often use Unixporn similar to how other people use Pinterest when they want to get inspired for decorating their room.
I really can’t deny the accusation that this community is responsible for “some” of my DE-hops 😅

Guenther_Amanita, (edited )

Exactly that is my point. By applying stricter rules to posting, including tagging, we could create exact that database.

I use Unixporn similar to how other people use Pinterest for decorating their home, not only to see cool setups. I personally think that my use case is also valid and not that rare.
If people already make the effort to post, why not make that more searchable and give others like myself the ability to filter?

Guenther_Amanita,

Thanks for sharing your view point, makes sense. Totally understandable!

Sadly, I’m nowhere qualified/ capable enough to host a reasonable website, let alone one that collects content like I imagine it to be.

Guenther_Amanita, (edited )

Guenther_Amanita,

I really like that post!

It seems like OP put a lot of work and creativity into the meme, while intelligently criticizing a problem and not just using “Windows bad hurr hurr” as the base.

I wanna see more of those kind!

Guenther_Amanita,

@linux @linux

Guenther_Amanita, (edited )

Guenther_Amanita, (edited )

My recommendation would be to use Logseq.

It’s similar to Obsidian (“Second Brain”/ PKM), but with the journal function as backbone.

It relies heavily on crosslinking, is markdown-based, very efficient and a joy to use once you “got” it, and supports a hell lot of features, including TODO, plugins, a knowledge network (“graph view”) and much more.

I use it for everything (external brain) and pretty much never loved a piece of software this much!
It sounds like it is THE tool you’re searching for!
