Haunting_Tale_5150,

I was in a bit of a panic and still am tbh. The main thing is how easy it is to find resources for any hobby or niche interest on there. It's gonna take a long time for any website to catch up the wealth of resources. I still find myself going "site:reddit.com thing I'm searching for" even though I don't interact with reddit itself too much. That's the thing that will hurt most when it's gone. That and the daily music news/discussions since I like to listen to music.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

I never got twitter's appeal. I used tumblr during its prime and twitter just seems like a blander, angrier tumblr. Even the content I like from twitter aren't enough to make an account and throw my voice in a hoard of millions of others.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

I grew up during the virtual console era. It was amazing. Just a dollar to buy a game. I bought plenty of old games through it. Now you have to pay monthly 20 dollars on switch online to access the same games they offered for one dollar just a few years earlier. Things like this are why I emulate.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

I haven't payed for either in a long long time, so genuinely forgot the price for both. I guess this is a lesson to search before I type lol.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

Idk anything about coding or hosting anything, but I want to learn to one day make an open source discord bot for my general-use needs...eventually 😅

Haunting_Tale_5150,

I use it cause new reddit slows down my computers. Even my m1 mac with ublock can't run new reddit. I think that shows a lot how much crud they cram into it. It's probably going to get way worse within this year.

I only really use it for gallery uploads and occasionally gifs in chat.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

I created 3 communities and tbh they're hasn't been too much activity on any of them, so all my worries about moderation went down. I suppose if lemmy becomes super active it might be more of a pain to manage the three, but the lemmy community is so chill that I doubt there will be too many issues compared to how it is in reddit.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

Firefox, I've used it for years and I never quite got used to any other browsers. Plus I hate google and even forks of chrome I distrust a little since IDK how much google can get into those. Firefox works on most websites I throw at it, and whenever I have troubles I put it on safari or vivaldi as a last minute thing.

Firefox imo, gets better every day, containers, the built in pdf editor, and privacy features make it incredible. Plus you can still customize it with userchrome. I made mine look like the old australius layout from the mid 2000s with the wavefox customization.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

Basically I would like an "old reddit" mode, with a similar layout plus color scheme. That's about it lol, I am fine with everything else.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

Same, half the time when looking up advice for buying things, or seeing what apps and websites are legit, I go to duckduckgo and type

!ddgr something blah blah

I hope someday in the future it will be !ddgl something blah blah

Haunting_Tale_5150,

Probably linux mint, but every distro will lead to some googling. However mint makes it very easy to just set and forget.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

When I was using linux, I used linux mint. There were some things I did need terminal for, but there's a surprising amount of things that allow you to use a simple gui.

Getting people used to linux with mint or a similar distro that allows clicky things is probably the best way to go imo.

Where's the feel of the old Internet gone, and what sites do you use?

Hey all. Since the Internet has just been boiled down to the main big social media sites, it feels like the magic is gone. Whens the last time someone said to you "hey check out this cool website"? It's always the same: TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, FB, Reddit, Discord. Forums are basically dead. Chat rooms are dead. Message...

Haunting_Tale_5150,

I'd also recommend marginalia, it's a search engine that favors text heavy websites. Fantastic for research and/or older style websites.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

The first thing I always suggest is my favorite band, so I guess I will here too!

Interpol! My introductory of my top favorite songs and songs that worked for getting people I know into the band.

Let's start with the "worker" songs:

Top 5 Personal Faves:

  1. Heinrich Maneuver

Possibly the first Interpol song I remember listening to. Upbeat and fun.

  1. Safe Without

Catchy and captures insanity pretty well. I can't really help but to picture that spongebob scene in my mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxYkB3BE5HE&pp=ygUYc3BvbmdlYm9iIGkgZG9udCBuZWVkIGl0

  1. All The Rage Back Home

A go to song that's a party-er and emotional all at once.

  1. Pioneer to the Falls

Amazing surfer-esque aesthetic with powerful timing and lyrics.

  1. Untitled

My all time favorite song EVER. I have a deep personal connection with this one.

But really, you can't really go wrong with them. It was hard to make a top 5.

Haunting_Tale_5150,

r/twobestfriendsplay is the main one I have not brought over that I am too shy to because its so community based.

Besides that would like some more generalized art/hobby subs, stuff like r/pixelart, r/blender, the xheads music subreddits. I already made !indieheads, but I would love to see the rest! And maybe some of the aesthetic subs too, like liminalspaces (if there isn't already), global village coffeehouse, and skeuomorphism.

Also r/regards, but IDK anything about bots to set up something like that, plus what makes it work hinges entirely on it being an invite only subreddit. I'm not sure how to bring something like that over to Lemmy.

Also this is a deep cut but r/easywdw. They don't deserve to lose their community again. :(

Haunting_Tale_5150,

I do wish there was an old reddit option but tbh most pf the ui is pretty old reddit-esque.

Also I fell for the tankie bs pretty fast then realized that's a bullshit reason to not join and I am trying my best to spread the word for Lemmy. Especially since tankie has become yet another buzzword who knows what it really means these days. I took it to mean pro-hong kong censorship, because that's all I see.
