@jann I believe they are valid criticisms. I don't think iPad should run macOS, not by any stretch, but Apple needs to tackle obvious limitations that have existed since the first iPad Pro.

ah yes, post-iPad event bad takes. One of my favorite moments that occurs once every 18 months, like an eclipse of Apple pundits

HilliTech,
@HilliTech@techhub.social avatar

@viticci There always seems to be some kind of weird take that gets circulated as fact before anyone even has one of these devices. Current one: "don't buy the nano texture. It makes your display worse."

Which is the opposite of what I hear from people who have actually seen it. idk where these people get their confidence in saying things without any firsthand information.

The iPad won't be a Mac and it's really time people figure this out. (They should have realized in 2018, 2020, and 2022 but who's counting)

There's some obvious stuff that iPadOS needs to be doing that it isn't. But it will never be a Mac. Just buy a Mac.

The iPad Pro is still the perfect computer for me.

Threads integration for Mastodon really showing its weakness for today's Apple event. Posts with very old information intermingling with the live timeline.

HilliTech,
@HilliTech@techhub.social avatar

@lorenac nah, it's a time delay on all Threads posts. On purpose to prevent deleted posts from being sent to Mastodon anyway.

HilliTech,
@HilliTech@techhub.social avatar

@jann @lorenac No idea. I'm just aware there's a purposeful time delay.

Google calling everything AI has ruined the ability to have basic conversations about products and features.

Apple is developing a generative image "AI" editing tool for images that replaces and upgrades the existing repair tools used in many photo editors. Instead of relying on nearest neighbor pixel replacement and other ML-based technologies, the generative model based editor would be able to "understand" what it needs to do to remove an object while maintaining a natural look to the background.

The only place you can do stuff like this now is in paid tools like Adobe's.

BUT, you have people out here confused by Google's marketing suggesting Pixel phones already have the feature thanks to Magic Eraser. No, that tool isn't AI or generative or whatever term you want to use, it's just really good ML. (Google does have really good ML image tools).

Google did this on purpose to appear ahead of the game on on-device AI. It worked.

Apple: Don't ask us about future products, we won't answer

Analyst: What if I phrase my question in the form of a cryptic riddle

Apple: Oh, then of course we'll tell you whatever you want to know

Feels like we need a name for the internet's ability to produce literally the worst takes.

I love the idea that federation allows multiple social medias to intertwine. I'm here on Mastodon, a micro blog platform, and on Pixelfed, an Instagram alternative. Someone is developing a TikTok alternative too, I may join it as well when it is ready.

Biggest issue I've found is I never know who to follow on these other platforms. Mastodon is obvious since all my tech people are here, but I've no idea who I should be following on Pixelfed. Feels like it would be more fun if my friends were there.

Apple Journal has been available for six months. Still using it?

I use it as my daily Journal and write an entry every day. I know I've journaled every day for 187 days with Apple Journal thanks to a Streaks automation.

Wild that Apple has added almost nothing since its initial release. It's obvious this will be one of those features that get one big update per year.

HilliTech,
@HilliTech@techhub.social avatar

@alexcox Nope. No options, not even a basic share sheet. I think I'm safe though because this app will obviously come to iPad/Mac next. Even if basic export functionality is never added, someone will figure out how to get the data out on the Mac.

Though I suppose I have a little bit of faith that this feature isn't going to just disappear. I also have about 1,000 Day One entries I'd like to import to Apple Journal. I've tried manually, but after adding about 50 entries I decided to see if version 2.0 gets a better import function.

I like the app, let's hope someone at Apple does too.

I like to have things organized in a way to reduce the number of decisions I need to make each day. It also helps if everything has its place to ensure nothing goes missing.

This little valet tray has been an excellent investment. It holds everything I might want in my pockets, though I don't always take everything.

Seen in the pic clockwise:

Pocket knife, lighter, keys, lint free cloth, cash, wallet, mints, ring, chapstick

I liked the valet tray so much I bought a second one for my bedside table. Keeps my charger from sliding around too.

I'm starting to think people that claim to like the fediverse dont understand the point. We want to be able to follow Threads accounts here without having to have a Threads account. That's the whole point.

No single entity is in control of social media. That's the glory of federation.

Blocking major companies from the fediverse will be the death of the concept. Don't silo yourselves in fits of hate and segregation or you're no better than the things you claim to protest.

@AAKL stopping Threads from being visible in a server doesn't protect the data from meta.

HilliTech,
@HilliTech@techhub.social avatar

@happyborg and you’re free to not follow the accounts so you won’t see it in your timeline.

No reason for a Mastodon server to block threads when users can manage it on their own.

HilliTech,
@HilliTech@techhub.social avatar

@jann They're free to block Threads and users are free to quit using the instance that isolated them from an entire social network. It goes both ways.

I'm all for freedom. People are free to do dumb things all the time. Why not block everyone in your instance from being able to follow the US president or government entities on Threads because you made the decision for them.

I saw Copilot and other apps got Apple Card support. Downloaded it to try budgeting and it's $100 a year. Didn't find anything too useful to warrant $100 a year that I wasn't getting from Apple Wallet.

Hello Fediverse! Our Threads account is now available to follow anywhere.

@appleinsider

HilliTech,
@HilliTech@techhub.social avatar

@Danweston @appleinsider @appleinsider Good question. The content is likely redundant, but between the two, I'd expect us to eventually push our Mastodon following to Threads. No decision has been made yet though.

I mean, our mastodon account will likely stick around since it's easy to push our RSS feed. So don't expect it to just get deleted. Threads will just have more manual posts, I expect.

Me? I'm sticking to mastodon. I never used threads and now I don't have to.
