Lover of: music, math, science, history, art, tech, my boos, and my babies. Professionally: Principal Engineer working on AWS Neuron Compiler Identify as: #autistic, #queer, #poly, he/him
as in: He is perpetually horrified and sorry for who he was the previous year.
Update: a long while later after writing that, I don’t really think that’s true anymore. I like last year me just fine, but that version of me believed that and it deserves respect too. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Opinions & profanity my own.

I’m bout to start being mean to mother fuckers about their calendar rudeness. 5pm the day before a 10am meeting that wasn’t even available in the first place? I don’t care if it’s a sales call for Jesus, I ain’t attending that shit just because of the way you asked.

Could it be that the populace is simpler and more repetitive than it used to be?

https://www.science.org/content/article/popular-songs-are-simpler-and-more-repetitive-they-used-be

JonathanMHenson,
@JonathanMHenson@hachyderm.io avatar

@jimfl we’re not dumber or anything, consumer capitalism drives the decisions about which songs do and don’t get made and which get radio play, and this is the outcome of that gradient descent. I fuckin hate it here.

My daughter just called me a wise old owl and I think I’ll store that one away for the flash before my eyes highlights reel. 🫠

I always thought if one of my kids ever called me a three word animal it would be a grumpy old goat. This is quite the improvement.

Okay old timers, what do you do when you hit the “oh… most of the people talking shit about tech don’t have any idea what they’re talking about and it’s not fun anymore to engage” stage of your life?

I want clothing made out of bath towels fresh out of the dryer.

JonathanMHenson,

@jimfl it’s called a bath robe. It’s even better with shades and a White Russian.

@joshourisman @fuzzychef @skinnylatte you’re not wrong though. Look at the plates for the cars. Those aren’t Oregon, or even US, style license plates.

I’m 37 and just now realized vocabulary tokenizers and transformers are just Godelian transformations. I read Godell’s proof prolly 17 years ago?

For reasons I’m sure I’ll reveal later, I’ve been spending a TON of time understanding the data flow and architecture of big ml pipelines and training runs. What I love about the domain is I’ve always been fascinated with cognitive science and the more I understand ml, the better analogs I find to understanding biological thinking. My latest realization? We are not our substrate, and it seems to me, our identity and self exists independently of that substrate.

And god damn if Hofstadter’s ideas don’t hold up pretty damn well, given their age.

I’m starting to think souls may actually be real things.

JonathanMHenson,
@JonathanMHenson@hachyderm.io avatar

And the bad news for humans that only feel happy when they feel unique in the universe, machines likely already have the cognitive capacity and complexity for soulness to some degree. What they don’t have is a central nervous system, or 5 different tangible senses being constantly forced into their self-attention operators.

JonathanMHenson,
@JonathanMHenson@hachyderm.io avatar

@jimfl it could if you attached a nervous system to it and caused it to infinitely loop its output back into its input.

The problem with the analogy of Plato’s cave is that it implies there’s only one cave and to escape one is to be out in the open. In reality, this is an experience any growing person will have on somewhat frequent occasions as they go through life. They will find each of these experiences feels like leaving a cave and going into the sun, but it’s really a chiastic process.

The free coffee thing at work can fuck off. I just end up going outside to buy something off campus so I can actually not have to stand in line for 800 years. Markets exist for a reason.

JonathanMHenson,

@jimfl that was me pre-medicated lol, I can assure I wasn’t worried about YOUR intensity. I miss our over the cubicle wall (except for no wall) shit talking.

I wonder if I could make money just handing off my “that business pissed me off, here’s the start up I would found to kill it” ideas to younger folk that have the energy to implement them.

Geez people you aren’t going to get enlightened despotism when you put an authoritarian in power. Those people were few and far between, none of them had to seek power (hereditary), and there’s a reason why they got called “the great”. Hint: because they’re super rare.

Never forget that many Americans would still be alive today if Trump had been legally required to show his tax returns before the 2016 election.

@Strandjunker since we’re actually in apocalyptic times these days, seems fitting:

Video games have prevented my children from learning the great and glorious art of dicking off. Even when I send them out to party with plenty of money, they go do the two things I suggested and come back.

Okay I finally figured out the “who the hell likes Starbucks and why the hell are they everywhere? It’s the LAST place I go in the Seattle area.” I’m in Colorado this week and I’ve learned why. I only have this perception cause I’m in Seattle in the first place. Starbucks, sadly, really is the best there is sometimes.

JonathanMHenson,

My new description for Colorado Springs is, “beautiful scenery and decent weed, but the lack of a reasonably decent coffee culture for a city this size is a nonstarter.”

@JamesGleick mu, “free” relative to what or whom and “will(ling)” to do or not do what?
