The other day, I got on my soapbox bit about productivity, how humans work and how we don't need to choose between having this nice happy world where people are allowed to help each other and "actually being productive"

I also described humans as a social and equitable animal that wants to help others. But... I don't have any scientific citations on hand for that; I've seen research around it over the years, I just don't have references on hand.

Do y'all happen to know of any I can read?

KFosterMarks,
@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly

What exactly are you looking for literature on? Not sure I'm parsing from the original post here. The false dichotomy between collaboration and productivity? The tendency for some humans to be social? Or equitable? I think if you give me something more specific, I might be able to point you in the direction of some scholarly lit that has informed my own thinking...

KFosterMarks,
@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly Oh my gosh, ALMOST EVERY POST I WRITE could use further clarifying - I love the method of throwing ideas out there, seeing what hits with folks, and then clarifying where it's asked for! I adore you for this original post, to be clear!

KFosterMarks,
@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly Okay, I adore you for this, too - you're a fellow "curious nerd", clearly, which is the highest compliment, IMO.

KFosterMarks,
@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly

In fact, maybe I can ask you to vet an idea: I've been gently cajoling @grimalkina and @CSLee to write what I'm calling "An Annotated (Auto)Bibliography", which is essentially a piece in which they would summarize 3-5 pieces of scholarly literature that has had an outsize impact on their thinking. Each annotation would include a narrative on how that research/work impacted their thinking at the time, and continues to influence their software engineering research work today.

KFosterMarks,
@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly Does that sound like something you think would be valuable or interesting to folks interested in empirical software engineering research? As a software engineer and engineering leader (and, yeah, a curious nerd), I want this from our Dev Success Lab researchers!

Okay, I just learned about a tech company that PAYS THEIR DEVELOPERS TO BE ON-CALL. Like, they pay them money in addition to their salaries to be on-call. And developers are not at all pressured to sign up, apparently.

I love this - is this common!? How am I just finding out about this? Somebody tell me this is common, please. And if it's not, let's make it common.

I'm excited to share that ⏰ @11:50 a.m. ET on April 25th, I'm moderating a session with Developer Success Lab research scientists @CSLee and @grimalkina titled "Science-Backed Strategies to Advance Your Tech Career."

In this session, Dr. Hicks and Dr. Lee will share their insights around topics like code review anxiety, learning culture, motivation, etc.

You can sign up here! We hope to see you there 😊 http://bit.ly/devsuccesslab-techskillsday

Y'all, @grimalkina is hosted tomorrow by Rebel Astronaut & Dr. Jennifer Pierce to talk about 🎉 Belonging & Creating Environments where Women Thrive in tech. 🎉

Dr. Hicks will be sharing science-backed recommendations for increasing belonging on software teams, Dev Success Lab research findings on gender equity gaps and other equity gaps in AI adoption, and how a thriving environment helps ALL developers.

Anybody familiar with both Snowdonia National Park in Wales and the Snowdonia 50k course? Spending two days on my feet there in June and trying to decide where to allocate my ~40-50 trail miles. 50k course SEEMS like a no-brainer, but would love folks familiar with the trails there to argue against simply covering the course miles - there’s a LOT of cool looking trail out there. For me, the steeper the better. Thanks in advance friends 😍

Okay new-ish to Mastodon, but can I tell you I LOVE IT HERE. Been perusing recent posts by folks and entities I follow this morning, and here's what I'm digging into today (the first day of a much-needed week-long vacation!):

Folks, we are getting close to releasing the scientific paper on my Review Anxiety research and I am so so excited to share this with the world. From a methods perspective, I'm extremely proud that we used clinical research methods and standards to explore intervention targets, then develop and assess the outcomes of an evidence-based code review anxiety intervention.

@CSLee @seresearchers

Software developer here 👋 to confirm that code review anxiety is SO REAL. @CSLee's research is so important, it's revolutionary in the SE research space, and I feel so hopeful that the intervention assessed here is going to make a huge impact for folks in their day-to-day software work.

The post-mortem and hackathon concepts are super adaptable to a variety of contexts, including helping software teams adopt AI-assisted coding tools in a human-centered, evidence-based way.

This was exactly the intent of the Developer Success Lab in creating our Generative-AI Adoption Toolkit.

It includes:
✅ A pre-/post-measure to track the effectiveness of the toolkit on your teams,
✅ a pre-mortem facilitation guide,
✅ a learnathon facilitation guide.

Just discovered the fully online book "Cooperative Software Development" by @amyjko . It's now at the top of my to-read list.

In the introduction, Dr. Ko writes that the book focuses "on the many ways that software engineering work is cognitive, social, and organizational", and that "it does so by engaging extensively with academic research literature".

https://faculty.washington.edu/ajko/books/cooperative-software-development

@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

If anybody wants to book club this with me, let me know - I'd love to organize some dialogue around this topic and this (empirical) approach to understanding software work, teams, processes, etc.

KFosterMarks,
@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

@eli_oat @shiftingedges @arosien

There's enough interest expressed here, on LinkedIn, and in the LeadDev Slack that I think we've got a group of ~10 folks interested here! So, I'm going to put something together 😍 I love an async, document-based bookclub, so will go with this method, but we can look into scheduling a synchronous hangout once we finish the book if folks are interested!

More info coming soon. Thanks for being open to this - I think it will be fun!

@InnerAlien No news yet! I'm wrapping up some thing following an international conference last week, but setting up this book club is my #1 priority on Friday!

KFosterMarks,
@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

Alright, y'all - have finally had some time to get organized around this book club! This is what I'm thinking:

1️⃣ Let's use hypothesis.io to hold discussion. For those unfamiliar, it's an online annotation tool that you use via browser plugin, and it allows you to easily create and respond to comments. I've created a hypothesis group for this book club which you can join here once you've you created your account: https://hypothes.is/groups/y2pyMNra/cooperative-software-dev

(more in next comment)

KFosterMarks,
@KFosterMarks@mastodon.social avatar

2️⃣ I've "flipped through" the book's chapters, and I think this is going to be a fairly quick read. Let's time-box this club to two weeks, tackling chapters 1-7 during the first week, and chapters 8-14 the second week.

3️⃣ I'm sure many of us are ready to get rolling with this thing, so let's get started Monday, April 1st and wrap up Sunday, April 14th.

Looking forward to discussing with you all!

I deeply believe that honesty is more valuable to a software developer, their team, and their organization than an inflated ego, a false sense of confidence, or a resolve to “fake it ‘till you make it.”

In this piece, I argue that being honest with your team and leader when you don’t yet know how to do something – and asking for help when you need it – isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather a powerful display of confidence and integrity.

@cobratbq That's just a really unfortunate situation for EVERYONE involved. The repercussions of this sort of skill & knowledge posturing are HUGE for both the individuals doing the posturing, and the teams they're on. I'm curious about the situation you describe: What were the effects you noticed on the team this person was on?
