An Important Hypothetical - What Android Apps Do You Install?? (sh.itjust.works)

You’re twelve years old on Thanksgiving at six thirty in the morning. You’ll be leaving for Grandma’s in about a half hour, and she’s lives a three hour drive away, going in one direction. You have nothing to prepare yourself on this journey, other than a tablet running Android Eleven. Beware, the speaker is broken and...

A book.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Sure. Or a bunch of recent bangers Linux isos as epubs and use them in whatever reader you want. I prefer iBook as an Apple user, but that doesn’t fit the scenario presented.

Automobiles!

Only in the sense that laws still need to be followed while using [the internet/water/electricity]. You don’t need to bake “no CSAM” into internet usage agreements, because it’s already illegal.

People never think these ideas through to the end. They are thrown out as emotional outlets, ignoring the fact that more pain would be caused.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I can’t agree with that. ASICs can specialize to do one thing at lightning speeds, and fail to do even the most basic of anything else. It’s like claiming your GPU is super powerful so it should be able to run your PC without a CPU.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Doesn’t matter, there’s a snowballs chance in hell Valve will sell.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Just… turn it off?

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You can literally kill off anything in windows, albeit with some effort in certain cases. Right down to their telemetry services everyone hates.

Beyond that though, such a system would be quite a lot of load on the hardware running it. In fact, many low end hardware combinations that support 11 likely won’t be able to support such a feature. Not including an off button would be silly. In fact, not making it opt in, similar to gaming clip systems, would be a terrible idea.

Comparing it to a locked down OS with a cloud service tie in I’d like comparing oranges to cars. All signs point to this feature being fully local. What are they going to do, hide gigabytes of video from you just to waste space?

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Decades of history exists in M$ not stopping users from modifying their systems however the hell they want. Your argument against that is “they might eventually.”

How exactly is TPM requirement at all related to cloud anything? They absolutely aren’t moving to cloud dependency, the closest anyone has heard on that is them moving certain enterprise options to subscription, and rumors from unreliable sources. Again, your argument boils down to “they might eventually.”

And what does their current install disk space have to do with anything? 20 gigs for an install is leaps and bounds different than an extra 50+ gigs being used out of nowhere.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Fair, but that’ll usually be a “fuck no” on their part, not a forced yes.

That said, if your enterprise policies are going to enforce this, they already have something worse enforced as well such as screenshots being uploaded to a centralized database every x minutes. (I’ve personally experienced this.)

Yeah, film and photo shots of food are typically inedible because the only way to achieve the “perfect” look is to do crazy things like gluing things in place, covering food in scotch guard/fabric protector spray, waxing things, putting things like cardboard or wooden skewers inside the food to give it stability, and more.

Makes you wonder how it’s legal to show an item that is literally impossible to sell as a food item in place of the slapped together item you’d actually get.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yes, everything has to be real. Doesn’t have to be edible, or appetizing.

If I take bread and spray it with scotch guard to make sure the liquid condiment I’m putting on it oozes across instead of soaking into the bread, it’s all still real food. But would you eat it?

If I prop up whipped cream by putting a cardboard cone under it, it’s still real food, but would you eat it?

Just because it’s real food doesn’t mean it hasn’t been modified to be inedible.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Go looking and you’ll find numerous articles, anecdotes, and videos that go into the ways the work with the ingredients.

The important part is that they are not allowed to “misrepresent” the food. Meaning you can’t make it look like you’re getting five pounds of meat when you’re actually only getting one pound.

But there’s nothing stopping them from putting paint on the burger patties to make them look perfectly cooked, or using paper towel and toothpicks inside to hold everything at “the perfect angle” or spraying scotch guard on pancakes to make sure the syrup runs nicer. Because the person watching the ad isn’t getting a “misrepresentation” of the food or ingredients.

It’s a fine line, and people have walked it over and over. The advertisers and food stylists have it down to a science, and because it’s all about the money they go over and above to make sure they walk juuuust inside the line.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Eh? Apple is pretty decent about privacy, at least leaps and bounds better than anything mainstream in the Android market, and I haven’t seen an ad on my iPhone. What ads are you using talking about?

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

AGI != LLMs.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

No, the existence of humans inherently disproves that. We just have hardware so advanced many still think it’s magic.

Now, if you said it was a pipe dream within the next decade? I’d agree.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It’s quite obvious he just says the same basic thing about every policy. It’s why he always says “it’s coming soon” and then… crickets.

The problem is, his base eats it up every time. In their minds, he has a secret catalog of every policy they like, while he wasn’t serious about the policies they don’t like.

Schroedingers policy, if you will.

what if the hacker provided the public key for https connection? (www.youtube.com)

So this video explains how https works. What I don’t get is what if a hacker in the middle pretended to be the server and provided me with the box and the public key. wouldn’t he be able to decrypt the message with his private key? I’m not a tech expert, but just curious and trying to learn.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

How are you ensuring the public key retrieved from the blockchain is legitimate?

You’re just removing the semi trustworthy CA and replacing it with the less trustworthy blockchain. Unless you’re proposing encrypting the blockchain connection, maybe they could use TLS?

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It would be inherently impossible for HSTS to work on first connection, you are correct.

To play devils advocate, DRM content is explicitly labeled as such, and is easily detected when it’s “properly” displayed. It’s likely trivial to exclude it from recording. Edit to note: I mean the video data itself is labeled, not the files. In fact most screenshot/recording software already can’t see DRM content out of the box. Try taking a screen grab of Netflix or CrunchyRoll (with a browser or app that has DRM labeling enabled)

Conversely, PII is notoriously hard to detect. It can come in infinite shapes and sizes, on websites, native apps, and images. And it is virtually never flagged in a way that you could programmatically censor it without heavy analysis of each frame. And then, unless you’re supplying it with all PII that will ever be entered into that machine preemptively, it would have to guess at what PII is.

Of course, none of this would be a problem if they actually took the time to explain what this was, and made it an opt-in with clear and concise wording on what it is that you’d be opting into.

But we all know that won’t happen.

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

No? That’s insane. “We don’t k ow exactly what’s going on, but we are going to go poke around inside- oh shit he’s dead, if only we had waited until things stabilized and we had the information we needed.”

Come on, don’t be ridiculous. “Try to fix it” could easily result in a dead patient, and I’m sure you’d be all for praising their attempt to fix it, right?
