KevonLooney,

The ministry said China sent 19 warships around Taiwan’s perimeter, 16 marine police vessels and 49 warplanes, of which 35 crossed the median line, the de facto border between China and Taiwan.

Lol, that’s it? Taiwan is bigger in area than 9 US states and has 24 million people. It’s taken China more than 19 warships and 49 planes to conquer uninhibited islands.

KevonLooney,

To scare Taiwan into capitulating without firing a shot. “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” China is not going to invade Taiwan. They literally can’t risk damaging anything on the island. They need the people there to accept them willingly.

China is not as dumb as Russia. Their leaders are venal and power hungry, but not stupid. They know the thing that keeps them in power is economic growth. If they don’t have that, they can’t control their population. An invasion of Taiwan would put racheting sanctions on their economy, slowly strangling it.

KevonLooney,

The IRA were terrorists who killed their own people. They literally killed other Irish people, including other IRA sects. Look up the IRA leaders; a lot of them died in IRA-ordered bombings or assassinations. There was no unified IRA.

That’s why the president of Ireland is denouncing them. That’s what the article is about. The British being bad doesn’t mean the IRA was good. They can both be bad and there are more than two parties in every situation.

KevonLooney,

They can both be your enemy, friend.

Didn’t you go to middle school?

You might be wondering why this information isn’t public already. Republicans passed a law to keep this information private. Yes, they’re protecting the identity of criminals selling guns to cartels.

Russia’s latest offensive into Kharkiv Oblast is stretching Ukrainian defenses (kyivindependent.com)

Two weeks into the offensive, one group of Russian forces is already fighting in the streets of the town of Vovchansk about 70 kilometers away from the city of Kharkiv, while the other is trying to push toward the town of Lyptsi, just under two dozen kilometers away from the city....

KevonLooney, (edited )

But Emil Kastehelmi of the Finnish Black Bird Group said that in Lyptsi, Ukrainians “used depth to their advantage. They pulled out from the most difficult border villages, and are now defending in places where they can better use the terrain.”

“Ukraine has been able to significantly reduce the speed of the attack, and Russia hasn’t been able to gain more than a few fields after their initial success,” he said.

I guess Russia will have to learn the hard way why Ukraine defeated Napoleon and Hitler. You expend valuable troops and supplies and all you have to show for it is some fields in Ukraine. And sanctions too.

They went from a three day operation taking the whole country, to “well maybe we’ll camp out in a field a few miles from the border”. You can’t defeat Ukraine, because they won’t give up. It’s literally throwing money and lives away.

KevonLooney,

That’s not why they’re separate. They were both authoritarian before. Taiwan was where the KMT went after they lost the Chinese Civil War.

KevonLooney,

They’re conservatives. They care about hierarchy. They’re the “good Latinos”, and dislike others who didn’t just get into the country automatically when they stepped onto dry land.

Honestly Mexicans are more conservative and it’s pretty dumb of the Republicans to cater to random white racists. I bet as Mexicans in the US gain wealth the Republicans will just pretend to have loved them all along. “Those were other Republicans, not real ones like us.”

KevonLooney,

Don’t waste your time. He values hierarchy and emotions, not words or policies. Words are just excuses for conservatives. They will never be convinced by them.

Original conservatives were not fighting for George Washington in the American Revolution. They were Loyalists, Monarchists. They fought against change. All the eloquent words of the Founding Fathers didn’t convince them because they didn’t care about words.

Conservativism is literally anti-American. Don’t use words. Vote. Convince other liberals to vote. Volunteer for a candidate that you like and support their candidacy in the primary.

Fucking vote.

KevonLooney,

The weird system of… predictable elections? Because that’s what we’re talking about. You can have predictable elections with a parliamentary system.

And any government is only as good as the people in it, as we can see from Brexit. They threw away their future because of a non-binding vote, which was very close and done only once.

KevonLooney,

There’s no reason why the current government should be able to pick the date of the election. What’s the reason behind that besides “The Prime Minister wants it that way”?

KevonLooney,

If your campaign is only 6 weeks, you have to be campaigning all the time too. Do you think people just say “oh there’s an election in 6 weeks? Maybe I’ll run for office!”? They have to have everything ready to go immediately. All politicians are campaigning all the time.

KevonLooney,

If you think locking him up would make him more popular, you fundamentally don’t understand Republicans. They value power and hierarchy. They value doing things and getting away with them.

They are not like Democrats and liberals who value ideas. There are no Republican martyrs. When Nixon resigned, Republicans stopped talking to him.

Don’t you remember how quiet it was when Biden was elected? Trump couldn’t get on TV anymore. Maybe he would call in to a show or two, but he didn’t have any rallies and nobody interviewed him. When Republicans go to jail nobody supports them, because they value hierarchy.

The whole point of hierarchy is that you’re untouchable.

KevonLooney,

That’s an “icicle”. An article is a two wheeled pedal powered vehicle.

KevonLooney,

People may actually drive more when gas prices go up. They might drive instead of flying to a vacation to save money.

KevonLooney, (edited )

While 42 percent of Republicans said they would reconsider voting for any politician who said what the former president reportedly did, their concern dissipated when the remarks were attributed to Trump.

On getting that piece of information, 42 percent of Republicans said they would be more likely to vote for the former president as a result, and just 12 percent that they would be less likely to vote for him.

Don’t try to convince Trump voters. Just get your friends to vote, instead of staying home. Fucking vote.

I think this is also a good indicator of how loud Trump voters are. They really want to shout “Trump!” as loudly as possible, because he represents freedom from repercussions. Polls right now are balanced because Trump supporters are shouting as loud as they can. Biden voters barely pick up the phone.

Just vote. Ignore the few loud losers yelling their opinions. Vote.

KevonLooney,

They’re not broke. Half of these countries are above $20K GDP per capita:

en.wikipedia.org/…/List_of_Latin_American_and_Car…

The problem with desalination is that it’s expensive and you can’t dump the salt anywhere. It creates a brine that kills fish. That would hurt the environment and the tourism industry.

Not only that, they get a ton of rain every year. They’re tropical islands. There’s enough water, they just need to collect it. Desalination is a technical solution when they really just need boring infrastructure.

KevonLooney,

I knew that shit was going down when they cleared the courtroom. Like “please remove the jury so I can verbally slap this witness”.

The judge is being extremely careful to not give the defense grounds for an appeal. From the description of what the jury is paying attention to, they sound like they are going to throw the book at Trump.

KevonLooney,

But the same people will say that Israel has to be 100% opposed, even though they are a democracy where lots of people disagree with the current actions of the government.

So China’s problems are ignored but Israel’s are not. That’s the definition of bias.

KevonLooney,

The people who give China a pass are who I’m talking about. They don’t oppose the Chinese government either.

For some people the thought process is:

Oppose “the West” = good

Support “the West” = bad

The countries making up “the West” change from person to person and day to day.

KevonLooney,

Yes, because government pensions have been replaced with essentially a 401k. You would force them to invest only in real estate or individual businesses, which would be much easier to hide bribes.

KevonLooney,

That’s not going to happen because they don’t have the experience to manage a pension fund. It doesn’t manage itself, so they’ll have to pay someone to manage it.

Do you want Goldman Sachs to get their hands on a pension fund for the US Government? Does that sound like a good idea?

KevonLooney, (edited )

That’s a recipe for more bribes, not less. Investments need to be disclosed. Gifts are subject to less scrutiny, as we’ve seen.

KevonLooney,

in America, government officials take tons of money from bribes, compared to officials in other countries

I assume you have sources for that. List them.
