I know I've mentioned this before, but one of my favorite features on the Mac that has no equivalent on an iPhone or iPad is adding new words to the system-wide spelling dictionary. The feature dates back to Mac OS X 10.0 and I'm pretty sure was in NeXTStep a decade before that.

And, even better, the custom words you add to the dictionary are stored in a simple text file, one word per line, at:

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.AppleSpell/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary

The menu that pops up when you long press a key (for diacritics) used to be non-protected, once upon a time I put my whole email address there. It’s a bit sad that these files are not easy to modify.

Here's my Ma'am, This is A Wendy's Rant:

Cleaning videos that involve mixing together baking soda and vinegar to clean things, you're just creating a Neutral liquid that takes away the degreasing power of acid, and the scrubbing power of baking soda.

Achcually !
Alcali are very good at breaking down grease. Even weak ones like baking soda. Ofcourse if you neutralise it with acid it wont work :D

The only cyborg I've seen get it right is Inspector Gadget.

Because I can probably name ten people right now who would go for the "motorized screwdriver in the finger" surgery, yet it so rarely shows up in fiction.

But that's the transhumanist future I'm waiting for

The most attainable body modification in this vein is to install a small magnet in the fingertip - at least one can pick up screws with one finger.

Why did the Tesla Robotaxi driver get fired?

He was fired because he kept going on auto-pilot.

TIL that the author of Planet of the Apes was also the author of The Bridge On the River Kwai.

Pierre Boulle (1912-1994) was born in Avignon. He was in Malaysia when WW2 started, & joined the French Resistance. Then he spied for the British & was captured.

His war experience was, he said, "the spiritual substance" of his writing.

The Planet of the Apes was inspired by watching the frenetic & seemingly mindless behavior of Stock Exchange brokers... 1/3

Nah, it’s the same in French. Maybe it’s the epoch, maybe it’s French colonialism?

I’m so not here for the eventual biofilm buildup. Or maybe it’s the next level of computational power?
Also, reminded me of the awesome video effects creation tool: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scanimate
The machine is analogue but the output screams “computer”.

What kind of bug would make machine learning suddenly 40% worse at NetHack?

One day, a roguelike-playing system just kept biffing it, for celestial reasons.

I couldn’t even play NetHack on my first PC. It had a 8088 as a processor that couldn’t manage the lunar cycle, or so I wad told.

Deadly morel mushroom outbreak highlights big gaps in fungi knowledge

Prized morels are unpredictably and puzzlingly deadly, outbreak report shows.

Morchella are edible mushrooms that need to be heated before eating, wikipedia says so in at least three languages with sources. There is no mystery.
No need to expand one groups toxicity to others - button mushroom being prime example of delicious whike non cooked.
There are ofcourse others, and there are of course caveats.
