There’s some misinformation floating around regarding Lemmy not having a karma system. While many have discovered otherwise, this is for those who may not have....
With Reddit, though, some subreddits required a minimum amount of karma to post, whereas if you have access to an instance you can post freely.
So it’s more a user rating of “this was good/how have you survived until this point” than a gatekeeping device: you, as a poster, can freely ignore your points and the points of others if you don’t care.
I moved to Duck Duck Go a while ago, partly for privacy reasons and partly because Google was becoming very top heavy with ads. It’s still a better search engine so I’ll use it occasionally, but only if DDG is really not getting what I need.
Do you know how good Ecosia is in terms of privacy? If it’s as good as DDG, then sure I’d use it.
Outright ban any federally protected group from access to their voting rights? No, and it would be instantly challenged and quickly rejected by the courts. As fucked up as it is now, the Supreme Court would also immediately reject that.
But that doesn’t mean they can’t engage in the kind of fuckery that’s entirely legal but definitely trends one way.
For example: felons can’t vote. So you investigate and prosecute a group more harshly and it just so happens that doing so sends a higher percentage of them to jail on felony charges than other groups. So you cow that group, suck up their money via lawyers’ fees and the loss of income when one parent is in jail that’s compounded by the difficulty getting a job afterward, and while it’s not a ban, and you do catch some people outside the group, it’s enough to tip the balance.
This would be great. I get the value of having instances be separated but starting over is a real pain.
Maybe something about account creation: create the account only for this instance or create it for all/select number of instances? Even something like 5-10 instances “holding onto” your account could prevent things from disappearing without warning unless something really bad went down.
Spitballing here, since my understanding of how this works is ehhhhhhhhh…
Should I be aggressively vegan? Should I isolate myself from all my non-vegan friends which equals all my friends? Should I kill over veganism? I feel complicit but I don’t want to lose all my friends. Should I get over it?

With the vlemmy situation ongoing, i feel like it would be useful to put this here (i did not make either of these tools)...

Why is it called a U turn and not an n turn
Basically the title but when we do a “U” turn we actually make a small n not a U.
