Well, that's new....

I have seen people rage-quit or unfollow for the strangest of things. But I never thought someone would go full mental over me leaving Mastodon.

Huh. Go figure. 🤷

And so it begins....

1st, for the 1st time, I am changing my name. 🤯 From Liinux_Is_Best to, simply, Linux. You can find my new account @Linux ( https://sakurajima.social/@Linux )

2nd, I am not just moving, but taking my ball and chain with me. lol That means, not just my followers, who I follow, and the few people I block, but all my post too. And not just from here at Sakurajima dot meo, but my old accounts that are no longer used, from Mastodon dot social, Mstdn dot social, and the short-lived Sakurajima dot social I used when trying Shareky for the first time.

Everything all in 1 place.

About 30 days after moving, this old account here, will not rely on a redirect, rather it will be deleted.

1 year on Fediverse this May, and the plan is to consolidate.

Like many people, I started on Mastodon dot social. I liked it there, and sometimes question the value in leaving. But ultimately, I left because I was worried that Mastodon dot social was becoming a centralized point. It is still one of the largest Fediverse instances (servers).

I moved to Mstdn dot social. The admin Stux did a good job running things, and it was my first time using someone's private social media platform, since retiring from community forums. I only left because Mstdn was slower on my home internet (T-Mobile Home). Sadly, after leaving, I started experiencing "reports" on my deactivated account (meaning an account I am not using).

At first, I thought it was a troll, and everything would easily be resolved. But now, I suspect it an inside job with the aim to cut cost, by soon removing the old account (it is using a 100s of MB with all the photos and videos I shared). I came to that conclusion because even harmless posts, which are obvious "false flags" are being removed, and my appeals have been denied.

That is something that used to happen on community forums too. Deactivated accounts would be pruned or purged over time and that process would either be transparent or not as transparent with the staff coming up with "reasons" and I suspect that is what is transpiring.

This is why I am thinking of consolidating, at which time, I plan to DELETE my old accounts. I have already archived the whole account (before making this post).

I learned that Sharkey (a fork of Misskey) allows you to not only move your followers, who you follow, and who you block, but you can also move your post too (along with your media). That is something you cannot do on Mastodon.

I tried Sharkey before, using Sakurajima dot Social, but some of the features were not yet mature and that has changed. The thread layout has improved, for example. Before, if I clicked on a post mid-thread, I would not always see what came before or after.

I picked Sakurajima because they're fast (on my end). I have no problems reaching the site. My only concern was it was a themed community with the goal of mostly anime.

Unfortunately, many of the Misskey / Sharkey communities are either themed or written in a foreign language, or their staff is heavy-handed, going so far as to refusing to federate with most instances (servers). The lead developer of Sharkey, once blocked or muted Mastodon dot Social, for example, on their instance.

I had considered starting my own instance (server), but with as busy as I am, I don't want to keep up with managing my own Sharkey server at this time.

Thankfully, Sakurajima, is not heavy-handed, and the rules here are simple.

I was asked only to use a special Hashtag in the rare times that I talk politics, which is fair, and works for me. That hashtag both allows my post to be noticed, but also easily ignored by those not interested. That is a win, win.

Linux_Is_Best,
@Linux_Is_Best@sakurajima.moe avatar

The alternative, which I have considered, was also moving to Kitty dot Social, but I question how stable and secure their instance is.

Kitty dot Social is hosting by a budget host known as OVH, or at least their proxy server is, which is powered by, Traefik.

OVH in of itself is not a big issue, but it would explain why on two occasions pulling up their instance information has failed to load. OVH has gotten better with their hardware dependability, but they still, occasionally, have internal network issues, though they're rare now, and not as common as they once were.

However, because of the nature of their configuration, I cannot say if it is their proxy or their source. In either case, as quick as it is, I do not like working with uncertainty.

For a Shareky instance, Sakurajima, seems it will meet my needs. It is both fast and reliable.

Starting April 2024, I will no longer be funding Mstdn dot Social, and will pick up part of the tab for Sakurajima dot Social (I promised to cover 1/2 of the main server cost) The main server is 89 bucks, so that will be 45 from me. I know most people join the Fediverse and do not contribute, but having owned several community forums in the past, I know things cost money. And while no one has specified that I do so, if I am going to migrate everything into a single place, I feel it is best I help in any way I can.

On that note, reader, whoever you are, and whatever instance you are using, have you considered reaching out to your admin? Just a thought. lol

Linux_Is_Best,
@Linux_Is_Best@sakurajima.moe avatar

It should go without saying, but since I have seen it before from others, just because I or someone else, helps fund a project or Fediverse instance, does not mean, I or others lay claim to that project or instance.

I recall when I first joined the Fediverse, someone was making a big deal about how they help funded an instance, but then threw a fit when something was changed. In my opinion, they were acting, entitled.

I, myself, was a big contributor toward Mozilla, but that does not mean, I had any sway over how Mozilla and the development of Firefox.

People should only contribute if they are able and if they feel inspired to do so. And when you do so, you know that things can change.

That said, being a contributor does not mean you own the instance or get to decide how things are managed. I am not being added to the staff, and I'm not going to be barking orders, and if I ever got it into my head otherwise (I wouldn't, but if I did), I'd be rightfully kicked faster than my head could spin (rightfully so).

The Fediverse is not X (Twitter), Facebook, Reddit, or any other social media platform where you can buy a seat and claim dominance. That is what I like about both open source, and the Fediverse.

If you, yourself, wish to manage things your way, ideally you should start your own project or your own instance. Joining someone else's will, rightfully mean, playing by their rules. And if you like how someone is managing things, it's great if you can help contribute when able (which is what I am doing).

@NaraMoore

I am simple. I don't "want" much in life or online for that matter.

My only "want" is that I want my post public for all to see (minus NSFW and alike). Some place where I can reasonably express myself without walking on eggshells.

I am not someone who wants to impose myself onto anyone, but I also don't want to be off into a small, private corner all by my lonesome either.

That said, occasionally, I want to say, Trump is a racist, crazy, moron, and Biden is a loser. I don't like either of them, and I'll vote for neither. But I also would prefer to avoid politics, most days.

I think the mainstream media tries to shove it down upon us frequently, and I often have to remove junk where I work in relation to it. But in the rare times I feel like commenting, I want to say those things without worrying about my account being muted.

A simple hashtag was a reasonable and acceptable compromise. Easy and benefits everyone. :-)

I used to use OVH and I cannot say, I would never, but it would give me pause, and I would have to think about it.

OVH built up their business quickly in the same way Amazon built up theirs. Starting at an operating loss and cutting corners where they could. Now that they're turning a good size profit, they are improving quality, but it will still take time.

That fire, for example, should not have happened. There should have been automated and manual suppression systems in place. Even the old building type layouts would have allowed them to evacuate part of the building and cut it off from the rest, while still remaining operational.

But as I said, they cut corners in the beginning to maximize growth.

Reliable Site (which you use) seems to be growing slowly, and isn't one of those large companies trying to make a big "boom" all in one go.

Hello @stux Do you have a rouge moderator?

The content is related to a post reported by the BBC News, when the BBC NEWS reported Israel had attacked an unarmed camp filled with people who had already been detained around the Christmas holiday. Nothing about this post is illegal.

Mstdn dot social may have gone rouge.

(see reply to this post to see the full context of that post)

Linux_Is_Best,
@Linux_Is_Best@sakurajima.moe avatar

This was the full post in question:

"The modern day Israel has become the new Nazi Germany.

I know people toss out that comparison, sometimes even carelessly, but this time it applies.

On Christmas Eve (December 24, 2023), Israel forces gathers unarmed women, children, elderly, and disabled people into an encampment and by that evening, shot them all up.

The Nazis did the same, as they too would collect Jewish people into a camp and then kill them.

Now, January 2, 2024, Israel is talking about expelling the whole population."

The post was related to events reported by, The BBC News.

Linux_Is_Best, to random

This caught my attention.

Either this is a system error and @stux needs to get on this right away, or some troll has taken a dislike to me.

I am not going to sit quietly because obviously I have done neither. I do not even use my old account at @Linux_Is_Best and at the moment it is serving as a redirect to my new account here.

I know the likelihood of it being hacked seems small since I use 2-step verification everywhere and the e-mail was not changed, since it correctly sent that notice.

Linux_Is_Best,
@Linux_Is_Best@sakurajima.moe avatar

On the off chance it is some troll trying to submit false reports, I guess I should tag @sakurajima into this thread so they can be made aware of a possible troll (see thread).

But I would like to hope it is a system error and that @stux will be on top of this. They worked really hard to maintain their server and take such things seriously.

KDE 6 is awesome and I have been using it on Fedora KDE Spin and also tested it on KDE Neon (made by Kde). -Works great.

If you prefer something Arch based, may I suggest either Manjaro or EndeavourOS.

I have also checked openSUSE Tumbleweed and it works great there too.

Someone else reported using Gentoo and Linux from scratch, and claimed it is working good.

As I said, hater.

You are making reviews covering KDE 6, but using the worst possible setup doing it. I and others have pointed out your issues are YOUR issues and others have tried to give you tips with you receiving different results.

At this point, you are no better than Linus Tech Tips doing a review of Linux.

Who is kidding who here?!

"Was Plasma 6 worth the wait" -- Then proceeds to strongly imply throughout the whole video that you think it was not and how many issues you experienced. 🙄

@BrodieOnLinux

It is an improvement, though I still believe overall you give the wrong impression. You are relying on people to read that at the end, when most may not read the comments and those who do will skip your notes.

You do you, but this is not one of your finer moments.

I still believe you should try a different distro on a clean install or VM. So you, yourself can see the difference others have pointed out.
