This is a very interesting angle on , drawing an analogy between the advent of and the advent of .

Sure, there are some questions of copyright and theft, serious ones, and yes, it will change the business of art, just as photography changed the business of illustration.

But AI doesn’t magically make anyone an artist, just as cameras opened image capture to anyone but doesn’t make them a “photographer”.

Are generated images art? Was going to reply to a post, but didn't feel like dunking on somebody else for no reason.

Even if we assume generative AI is only a tool in the hands of a human, like a brush, the tool and the output are not what makes it art or not. It isn't art because of the paint. It isn't art because of the brush, or the canvas, or the beauty of the output.

The art is in the creation, and the human is not really involved in the actual creation.

Is it not? Without an idea and the prompt, there is no generative art. Is a writer not an artist despite not pointing a camera? Is a photo editor not an artist because they are only editing someone else's image? Is someone who glues together magazine photos not an artist because the images are not their original work?

I'm not claiming that everyone who types a prompt is another Rembrandt, but I would suggest your assessment is too narrow.

@jasonstcyr it’s a fair point. In my case, I often spend many iterations trying to get the AI to spit out what I have in my head.

Not much different than when I directed a scene. It’s all about communicating what you want.

But it’s weird, it’s new technology, new workflows. Just like when I learned Photoshop, or computer-based non-linear editing. It’s like CG, it was weird until it wasn’t. It’s different until it becomes the norm.

@jasonstcyr I also think that AI will find a niche. It’s not specific enough or predictable enough to be screen ready, and it won’t be for many years or never.

But in a see it being used for high fidelity pre-visualization, and for producers or writers pitching ideas.

Just as digital cameras and computer based editing changed traditional production and post production, AI tools will also change workflows and jobs The only constant is change.
