I spent way too much time today disassembling two bicycle wheels, so that I could begin the process of transplanting this Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub into a 27 inch rim that will fit my road bike.

While I had the hub free of a wheel, I ended up partially disassembling it so I could clean it and grease it, since it felt pretty gunky and sticky when spinning.

I was too scared to take it completely apart because there are a lot of little pieces inside, but I took it apart enough to get it working well again. It looks much nicer now too

Annoying realization: The hub is drilled for 20 spokes, but my rim is drill for 18 spokes

@bsmaalders Yes, that's per side. I'm sure there are, but I'm not paying $92 for a rim. I might just redrill the rim for 40 spokes

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@bsmaalders I was reading about that, too! I think I'll just drill the rim though, and weld up the eight old holes that will too close to the new holes

@bsmaalders you're right. I shouldn't be intimidated. I've taken apart and reassembled worse

Having wild ideas about having bolt-on adapters machined for the hub

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@steter I have to buy new spokes anyway because I'm moving this hub into different size rim, so i would be ordering them to a specific length anyway

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@dragonfrog maybe? If I could find a set of 700c rims for cheap and also drilled for 40 spokes, i would go for it, but i feel like that's not going to be common either

@rose_alibi @misternineham some friends of mine used it as accent panels in part of their house and I was surprised how good it looked with a coat of polyurethane and placed in the right environment

I posted a few weeks ago about how people were leaving empty nitrous cylinders lying around and wondering if they could be reused for something.

Someone left two of them in the gutter of my house last night, so I grabbed them to get a better look at them.

They are heavy steel. The end caps look like they're 1/4" thick. The label on the tanks say they are rated 120 bar working pressure (1740 psi). That's a lot of pressure!

@RealGene no, these are not for exchange. The cylinder has a prominent "do not refill" stamp. Plus I see so many of these discarded, each with its own silly branding. These are meant to be disposed of

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@RealGene precisely like that

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@RealGene They must have tightened up access to that, leading to these new, smaller, throwaway ones

I cut the bottom off of one to see if they would make a suitable wind chime like the larger gas cylinders do, but the tone and richness of sound just isn't right

What’s the most awesome thing I saw at Hamvention? It has to be the 1964 Ford Econoline full of Collins S-Line gear

1964 Ford Econoline Van labeled “Collins Radio Company Comminications Van”. on the roof are several vintage Hustler antennas
