Machindo,

At my current company all changes have to happen via GitHub PR and commit because we use GitOps (ex: ArgoCD with Kubernetes). Any changes you do manually are immediately overwritten when ArgoCD notices the config drift.

This makes development more annoying sometimes but I’m so damn glad when I can immediately look at GitHub for an audit trail and source of truth.

It wasn’t InfoSec in this case but I had an annoying tech lead that would merge to main without telling people, so anytime something broke I had his GitHub activity bookmarked and could rule that out first.

Machindo,

Man that Time’s article seems so out of touch to me. I couldn’t finish it.

It’s just funny to see a 2013 take on millennials before I was even old enough to realize the shitty world we inherited from the Boomers.

Machindo,

I thought that quote satire. Nope it’s real. JFC. 😩

There's still room for improvement, but Linux gaming has come a long way in a short time. (lemmy.world)

I remember when Proton launched it was like magic playing games like Doom and Nier Automata straight from the Linux Steam client with excellent performance. I do not miss the days of having the Windows version of Steam installed separately.

Machindo,

I’ve used Ubuntu on many occasions but tried PopOS since last week.

It’s surprisingly good. Lots of ergonomics over Ubuntu. They have a version of the iso prepackaged with Nividia drivers.

Most surprisingly, after some install busted my sound devices (they stopped showing up), I discovered PopOS has a system refresh button that saves your home directory but reinstalls the OS to a fresh state. Very convenient.

Machindo,

Thoughtful take! Ditto.

Machindo,

It means “I feel the same way you do and would have said it myself, so I acknowledge and applaud that you said it first”.

Machindo,

My dad is a cabinetmaker. At 34 I can reflect on my life and I have never seen higher quality cabinets than his. Nothing comes close.

I remember he used to complain that people could get cabinets cheaper at Walmart so he lost more and more business.

I think with wage stagnation, people can’t afford custom cabinetry anymore. So it seems insane to us to spend that amount. But you can imagine that with the price of lumber and the cost of skilled labor that 7000$ comes quickly.

Machindo,

Obsidian is so so good.

I don’t even mind to pay for their sync service to support them. You can even encrypt your vault (notebook) with your own key.

Machindo,

I use syncthing on my phone to backup photos to a drive on my homelab.

EPA Approved a Fuel Ingredient Even Though It Could Cause Cancer in Virtually Every Person Exposed Over a Lifetime (www.propublica.org)

The Environmental Protection Agency approved a component of boat fuel made from discarded plastic that the agency’s own risk formula determined was so hazardous, everyone exposed to the substance continually over a lifetime would be expected to develop cancer. Current and former EPA scientists said that threat level is unheard...

Machindo,

Dude it is absolutely an EPA report, the chemicals are all named with their IDs, and ProPublica got experts in the field to corroborate the data.

What more do you want?

Machindo,

Something doesn’t seem right about that.

You’re supposed to work 40+ years to pay off a 20 year debt to society? That doesn’t seem fair.

Also you didn’t chose to be born, I don’t think you owe anyone anything for having to grow to reach an age where you have agency over yourself.

Machindo,

That doesn’t make sense and you know it. It’s stupid and vindictive.

Machindo,

This answer is so perfect and so pragmatic.

It’s the thing I’d love to tell in the heat of the moment but always bungle the delivery.

I feel deeply the sentiment that I’ve been lucky but that’s all it’s been is luck. I don’t think I deserve what I have. No one should have to scrounge just to survive.

Thanks for this.

Distro hoppers, how do you manage your config files?

I am currently trying to keep track of my config files in a repo to be able to get the configa back together easily if/when I change distro, but I am not sure if that’s the best way or if I should be using some tool to help me since I some programs keep preferences in other directories other then $HOME (at least I think so)....

Machindo,

Same but with the addition of a Brewfile to manage installed apps/CLIs (supports both Mac and Linux)

Machindo,

I feel like every one of these articles should come with a link to message your representatives. I’m sure most folks don’t have the energy to do so on their own. I’m imagining what it’ll take to do it myself and whether I’ll get around to it.

Recommendation to defederate from exploding-heads

That entire instance is infested with a massive amount of right-wing hate, transphobia, homophobia, and ugly political vitriol under the guise of “allowing free speech”, rising to the same level or worse than lemmygrad (which we have already defederated from for obvious reasons). Please get this garbage off of the “all”...

OC Unlike previous attempts at trying reddit alternatives (like Voat), kbin and much of the lemmyverse doesn’t seem to be plagued with extreme far right buffoonery.

It’s one thing to have differing views, but I’ve seen enough attempted reddit migrations to be relieved that the popular communities in the fediverse so far haven’t been about crazy racist stuff or other extreme right bullshit....

Machindo,

It’s a different app/organization altogether but still federated like Lemmy and uses the ActivityPub protocol.

Machindo,

I recently beat AC4:FA (3 times) in anticipation of AC6. It was a slow burn at first, then a switch flipped and I was obsessed with the tuning/customization.

It was so fun finding a melee only build that carried me through the hardest mission in that game (Destruction Ending)

All that said. I have only played AC2/3 so I can’t speak for AC1/5.

anders, to lemmy

Lemmy is booming

I have never before received so many reactions and comments on my Lemmy posts before, so it's obvious to see, that there are many new members here.
Welcome to all the new! And I'm looking forward to see more of you here.
Cheers!

Machindo,

What's the best way to contribute? I used the Patreon link at the bottom of the join lemmy page.

Looking at it now https://www.patreon.com/dessalines is pretty lite on details.
