MajorMajormajormajor,

Is biking to work not an option where you live? You get the same good-headspace and exercise but you save on gas and car maintenance too.

MajorMajormajormajor,

Makes sense, would be a short bike ride then for you lol.

MajorMajormajormajor,

Well, you convinced me, sign me up! I wonder if they’ll let me eat cheeseburgers during the 100 meter sprint?

MajorMajormajormajor,

You’d have to pay that poor bastard though, most people won’t want to look a fool on live tv for nothing.

MajorMajormajormajor,

I have an ebike I use as my daily commuter for a distance of 11 km each way (6.8 miles) over decently hilly terrain in a windy city as a large man. It still only takes 25 minutes and I charge my battery once a week? Maybe twice if I’m tired and using more boost.

Are you mechanically inclined at all? I purchased a motor conversion kit and a battery to convert my regular bike to ebike. It wasn’t really a difficult process, the hardest part was removing the bottom bracket as it was quite stuck. Took some thinking to get enough leverage without having the tool head chew out the bracket teeth. The rest was relatively plug and play. I was able to get the 500 W motor and 48 V 18 A hour battery for ~$1200 CAD together. I use it to commute to work so I wanted a longer range, if you don’t need as much power or as much range you could do it for cheaper.

I went for a mid drive motor which are more efficient but more expensive than hub drive, if you’re budget conscious you could do a hub drive. From my understanding the hub drive can be more difficult for maintenance (the wheel is a special version, so you need to buy another wheel that works with the hub drive if any issues occur) but I’m no expert.

All of that is a moot point if you don’t already have a bike to use, but you could find a local bike recycle store to get one cheap? Or you could get a new bike and convert that. I had a marin fairfax 2 that I converted over and it works great, haven’t had any issues and I’ve put on a couple thousand kms on it since converting (the display tracks total distance which is handy). I believe the marin was $700ish new from my local store.

You could search for other options if you don’t want to support amazon, there are different sites to source the parts from, those were just the first two that I saw.

Here’s a battery from a Canadian company.

Here’s a mounting bracket for the battery if the bracket seems unsteady or the holes don’t line up like with mine.

This is what I ended up going with. Let me know if you have any questions, I’d be happy to chat about the process more.

All of this is canadian specific because I reposted the meat of it from an older comment, bug I’m sure you could find local alternatives easily enough.

MajorMajormajormajor,

I’ve used night masks before and they work well, but I always would wake up tired because it was too dark to see it getting light out. I ended up going with blackout curtains and an alarm clock that slowly turns the light on over a 30 minute period to mimick the same effect.

Obviously way more of an investment in money, but I find my sleep quality has vastly improved with doing so.

An extra bonus is that blackout curtains can help keep heat out if you live somewhere warm.

MajorMajormajormajor,

That’s not nearly enough tax to make it effective, you need to increase the amount 25 or 50% for each additional home. Nobody should be using housing as an investment, it’s for living. This should also include any corporations owning investment properties as well.

MajorMajormajormajor,

Keeping the handlebar moustache makes the meme, well done.

MajorMajormajormajor,

I wouldn’t, it’s always helpful to trip with a friend who’s done it before and ideally is sober too. A responsibilibuddy if you will. Helps you have a good time and to talk it through with someone.

Also, mushrooms can be strong, and take a while to kick in (1 hour usually for me), so pace yourself and start small. Don’t do the classic blunder of saying “this isn’t working, I better take more”.

Happy tripping!

MajorMajormajormajor,

You want to access your home media, at home, without contacting Plex servers first? Blasphemy!

MajorMajormajormajor,

Yes I agree also, blowing through stop signs is terrible regardless of method of transportation. I should have been more clear in my advocating for Idaho stops earlier.

MajorMajormajormajor,

Cars and bicycles are two completely different things, and should have different rules governing them. A car is larger, deadlier, and takes longer to stop than a bicycle. A car going 40-50 kph is traveling with far more force, and won’t be able to stop as fast as a bicycle traveling 20 kph.

It’s like saying cars and planes should follow the same rules. Or even better, cars and semi trucks. There are highway speed signs that state one speed for trucks and one for everyone else. Or certain roads where trucks aren’t allowed to drive on. We already have a tiered approach to motor vehicles, it should extend to bikes as well. Blanket approaches don’t work in our modern world when we have cars, bikes, ebikes, escooters, etc all sharing the same space.

MajorMajormajormajor,

You’re comparing apples to oranges with the vehicles though. Besides the Amish buggies, which are fairly rare, everything on that list is powered by a motor/engine of some variety except the bicycle. Look at the speed of bikes compared to any of those other vehicles, they’re not anywhere nearly as fast. The only exception is ebikes, but again, this is an argument for a tiered system where there are different rules for different vehicles as they all interact differently. Ebikes are still supposed to be restricted to 32 kph and 500 W motor max in Canada, which is far slower than any car can do. If people are modifying them to go faster then that’s a different issue to be addressed.

The road infrastructure and road rules are designed around cars. Instead of applying old laws not designed for them, we need different rules for bikes as the times are changing. More and more people are using bikes as a method of transportation, they’re no longer leisure use only.

MajorMajormajormajor,

In my example the more dangerous vehicle (semi) has more restrictive rules. Should the less dangerous vehicle (bicycle) not have less restrictive rules? I’m not talking about no rules at all, but treating stop signs as a yield sign for a bike makes sense considering the shorter stopping time, slower speeds, and wider perspective (no parts of the car to potentially block vision) on bikes.

The point of stop signs is so that 1000+ kg vehicle doesn’t interact with traffic, usually from a side street onto a main street, without looking first. Or to ensure there is a known pattern at a 3 or 4 way stop. You need this when the average stopping distance for a car traveling 50 kph is 35 m in dry conditions. You don’t need the same safety measures with bikes because of the physics involved with a smaller, slower, faster stopping, etc bike.

Also, all of this is irrelevant to the point if we had proper bike infrastructure in cities there wouldn’t be a shared road space, or not nearly as much. The infrastructure is designed with cars and truck in mind, as are the rules. If we had more separation between the two methods of travel you would have fewer issues.

MajorMajormajormajor,

Removing the principle resident capital gain exemption wouldn’t help anyone without a home buy a home, it would just hurt people who already have a home. Also, capital gains aren’t realized till you sell, so again not really helpful.

The way to alleviate the issue is implement a progressive property tax on second homes. Each home beyond the first has a 100% increase in property tax for every home besides the primary residence. 2 homes: 100% increase, 3 homes: 200% increase, etc.

Housing shouldn’t be an investment, but punishing people who have only 1 house is the wrong way to go about this.

Anyone dream about hockey?

So last night, while dreaming, I was arguing with someone that “I didn’t used to be this bad at hockey”, and they didn’t believe me. So I pulled up my NHL stats. Between age 35 and 40 I was the Jets 7th Dman, played 42 games, and had 20 points. They still didn’t believe, so they pulled up YouTube looking for video...

MajorMajormajormajor,

Damn, man, even your subconscious is saying you suck at hockey. You need to learn to love yourself a little.

Or learn to accept you’re not good at hockey, I dunno I’m not a dreamologist.

Does anyone know what is a good cycling computer? All I need is good GPS/mapping features that doesn't connect to my phone what so ever. I don't need fitness functions at all

MajorMajormajormajor,

Easiest solution is to use an old phone or buy a cheap old phone off ebay/whatever and use that in airplane mode as a gps.

What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Other than your carrier give it for free or cheap, I don’t really see the reason why should you buy new phone. I’ve been using Redmi Note 9 for past 3 years and recently got my had on Poco F5. I don’t see the point of my ‘upgrade’. I sold it and come back to my Note 9. Gaming? Most of them are p2w or microtransaction...

MajorMajormajormajor,

Have you thought about flashing a custom rom on your phone, or getting a phone that supports custom roms if you don’t have one already?

I have an old samsung galaxy s5 still running LineageOS and while a little slow it’s still usable as a backup in case my current phone shits the bed.

The process is fairly straightforward, and if you’ve installed linux on a laptop you can install LOS on a phone.
