"The average human can name about 1,500 people, and we personally know about 500.¹

But most of those people won't help us in times of need.

The people who will help are our friends – and psychologist Robin Dunbar argues that we have an average of 150 people who we try to stay in touch with.² Within that group, we have about 15 friends and family we contact each month and one to two people with whom we share an intimate relationship – often a partner, and sometimes a "best friend forever.""

MediaActivist,

@antiaall3s I remember, the more ignorant I was, the more friends I had, like at college or workplaces or wherever. Circumstantial friends - what most people are satisfied with ("My school locker was next to this person's so we go way back," "I shared my lunch break with that person for years," etc.) The more I believed in things, and acted accordingly, the fewer friends I had, but also the better friends I had - ones I shared a profound sense of political principles with; a good rapport and understanding. Few and far between. Precious and valued. (People very much like you, actually, and we haven't even known each other very long!) But I think popularity is often a sign someone believes in little, and speaks about it even less. It may explain a lot about the world.

the medium is the message?

complain about what influential people are saying or the messages/misinformation that some groups/governments are pushing, but please focus more on how this stuff propagates.

what services are we using that lets them decide what the masses see/hear? help people move to decentralized alternatives without ads or algos. if the problem is the public boosting their claims, work to advance critical thinking and engage the spreaders in good faith dialogue.

MediaActivist,

@wjmaggos I'm literally working on a piece for We Distribute that cites "the medium is the message" in reference to social media, because I think you're right, the online spaces have to reflect how we want society to be, and we can put our energies into that rather than helping to legitimise those supposed "town squares" that are, in fact, corporate conference suites driven by algorithms and ads.

The Hell Bus arrives in my city of tomorrow for a week in the Steel City! The Hell Bus is a satirical protest on wheels, exposing the flagrant greenwashing of the oil industry and Shell in particular, jam packed with propaganda busting art installations. https://adfreecities.org.uk/hell-bus-tour-2023/

I want to join the Open Rights Group. But I know what I'm like: If I join, I'll also try and help start a chapter in my city, and then I'll be busy doing that on top of everything else. And I'll still be wondering why in recent years my annual income has barely reached past, like, ten grand, and the wolves are at the door. So I've promised myself I'm not going to slap down dues and becoming a paying member of ORG. Nope. I've asked for it as a birthday present. Oh, wait! Well, shiiiit...

Okay, it's now clear. Elon Musk is a Bond Villain. And given that in actuality, Bond himself is villainous, that's saying something.

I sometimes fantasise about being part of a workers cooperative dedicated to the development - and effective promotion - of a distribution. Of course, I'm the drizzling shits at coding so there's a slight obstacle there. But hey, my heart would be in it! (I've got a background of relatively successful fundraising, so there's that, at least)

MediaActivist,

I remember being one of "those people" and one time saying to a Linux developer "More people ought to know about Linux!" and of course they replied, "We don't work in fucking marketing, we're busy trying to develop a damn good operating system!" It still makes me smile, and I still share the anecdote when I teach tech. More people like me, who are in constant denial of capitalism! There's something admirable about it.

MediaActivist,

@Yeekasoose Haha yes! But only about three percent of us using them.

I should mention I've also just written an anarchist critique of the current UK media landscape for @Freedom_Press, including how information needs to be exchanged in the spirit of mutual aid via a network of local autonomous media similar to the French Mutu model - so stay tuned for that!

In case you didn't know, I run @theleftfist which covers pro wrestling from a leftist perspective (free content, and member benefits from about a dollar a month). For its podcast, I just finally conducted an interview with @Authenticdmckee, author of Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher, and I'm sure you'll find it as interesting, informative, and enlightening as I did: https://www.patreon.com/posts/interview-with-89669253?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link

MediaActivist,

@theleftfist We talked about so much stuff - from how pro wrestling might operate in an anarchist society, to the parallels between wrestling and teaching, and loads more. And members can access the extended cut next week so please consider signing up and supporting this content as it would mean so much to me! Thanks!

MediaActivist,

@theleftfist I should also say, as part of a busy week, I myself was also interviewed for the Struggle Session podcast, to discuss the pro wrestling media "dirtsheet" coverage of pro-union, pro-abortion, pro-LGBTQ+ wrestler CM Punk and his termination from AEW and their Warner Bros Discovery programming, amongst other things. Struggle Session is a political pop culture podcast by Leslie Lee III, who is battling Long Covid: https://www.patreon.com/strugglesession

MediaActivist,

Just a reminder for folks who thought that fascist eugenics was worst in places like the States: here in the UK, after my first vaccines and initial boosters, I I and millions like me haven't had access to boosters at all for a couple of years now - the government made it clear they were taking them off the table and ensuring they were not to be accessed, even for those willing to pay for them. Only specific categories of people have been deemed eligible to access boosters. This is the extent of the dominance of right-wing ideology in British electoral politics now. And to think, there are still some denialists claiming a plot to inject "poisons" into us for Big Pharma, when in fact the late stage capitalists actually shudder at vaccines and masks or anything that reminds the public that there's still a mass disabling event in the form of an ongoing pandemic in a society dominated by their economic system that requires human sacrifices to generate profits.

MediaActivist,

The worst virus is still capitalism, as I wrote here a couple of years ago when I naïvely assumed my boosters at the time would at least be the first of many, with a billionaire ready to assume the position of Prime Minister fresh off a campaign offensively calling on people to "Eat Out to Help Out" capitalists, even though (or maybe even because) it would inevitably contribute to a surge in Covid cases: https://www.mediaactivist.com/the-worst-virus-still-remains/
