I feel weird about @radiofreefedi. I'm not sure how to articulate it except that it's kinda centralized and it's not primarily afaik. imo the energy should be going towards people building apps like , letting everyone share/support the work however they want and highlighting all the curators running streams/podcasts about music. grow the whole infrastructure and community.

The natural end state of hashtags is to eventually serve as subreddits for the . but here they would overlap, allowing us to visit any space in the Venn diagram of all the tagged posts we're interested in.

why do we need that extra moderation? people might poison hashtags but they already do. current moderation can deal with that. what I also want here is all replies managed like on reddit/lemmy/kbin.

maybe we could try it. beyond the cool value of overlap, having any place or group be where we discuss a subject doesn't make sense when we're supposed to be decentralized. I love what kbin/lemmy are trying to do but we're built different. we need to design for that.

I listened to these two podcasts today, and interesting to compare the takes. On one hand we have an in-depth (and beautifully nuanced) discussion of fediverse tech by @mike and @snarfed.org@snarfed.org. On the other, 3 media dudes talking about if fediverse will ever be mainstream. I know Troy and Alex from SAY Media days and I like them both. Also know Brian from web 2.0. I found both podcast discussions interesting, but from different angles. Btw Mike, they mentioned you.

I feel like the decentralization of media is happening but it's so fucking slow and confused. The public interest perspective is like the last reason anybody considers. Routing around government, corporate and billionaire control over what we think and pay attention to is why this all really matters.

We can now connect to accounts from here, but both sides need to enable it.

We're supposed to be opt-out folks, but too many "safety" advocates are stopping the from ever becoming ubiquitous. Imagine being so scared of "bad" speech that you demand users and server admins add each other's domain to their settings before they could communicate or even browse to those sites. We'd all still be on AOL.

The idea that one's gender can change regularly is not compatible with hormones and surgery. I think both can make sense but they are different things. We need different words. Maybe it's gender vs sex but I don't think there's any kind of broad agreement on this.

My understanding of this was to try to reject gender. It was a prison put on us by purveyors of culture to control us. Adults could do what they want with their body, but you could also be masculine in a dress etc.

listeners: here's what the community thinks is the best work out there, with totally new stuff sprinkled in. please vote.

musicians: here's a way to get your work heard and possibly put in rotation.

like you said, the won't become as ubiquitous as email if our default is opt-in. because most people won't understand the settings etc.

we need an explicitly pro connection but anti intentional harassment federation policy (that I think would be very popular). instead the default is becoming having a network where nobody can stumble on anything upsetting. that's not the open web.

deal with spam, don't limit browsing.

you paint a black and white world, but it is gray. nobody wants everything dictated. it's entirely appropriate to have disagreements over how much government should do. I have no problem with minarchists generally.

my issue is with ancaps who are either lying or misunderstanding what that would mean for most people, and then advocating not voting or fighting the state. they won't ever get the world they want but will hand more power to corps and rich jerks along the way.

One of the reasons I get fustrated about people gatekeeping the fediverse and banning the general public etc, its very hard to see something like Kenmure Street happening on here as things are.

I knew / followed the first people who saw the Kenmure street van, I met them via twitter. I don't think a single person in that group have moved over here.

social media is like both email and browsing. we want server assistance with spam (unwanted tagging here) but otherwise no interference with our browsing (who we can connect to).

people here need to publicly embrace a new norm. no protecting users from stumbling on upsetting content but also no tolerance for intentional harassment. federate with servers with misinformation and unpopular opinions, but not servers that won't police their users that tag people with shit or poison hashtags.
