@jcponcemath That's a cool way to plot patterns like that! I made a sketch in that vein last year. Maybe I should try incorporating some of these.

Spiraling arcs that form interesting patterns. Slightly more coarse pattern, a bit wavy.

My website used to have a blog roll. Then I thought links sections were moot because social media was where the network was happening.

Now I think we should be in charge of our connections more than ever.

My About page has a blog roll again! Every link points to a site maintained by a real, beautiful human person.

@twilliability That's great! Now this is good motivation for me to finally finish my website and to make it cool enough that you'd deem it worthy of including a link to it there.

Minnesota’s new and improved state flag was officially adopted today. https://usflags.design/minnesota/

Metamere,

@lynnandtonic
Thanks for the great writeup and design breakdown! I'm thrilled about the new flag for my home state. You inspired me to have a go at recreating the flag layout with p5.js.

https://openprocessing.org/sketch/2268797

I found it a bit easier to set it up using the exact fractional dimensions from the official construction guide, though.

https://www.sos.state.mn.us/media/5893/mn_state_flag_constructionsheet_v01242024.pdf

I also tried to make a version of the code that was as compact as possible. Only 345 characters!

So enjoy to play my piano. I can't read music, I don't know nothing about songs or notes (yet). But oh, these sounds and these tunes popping up and disappearing again while my hands are jumping and my fingers falling over each other.
I guess slowly I will learn to play properly, but I don't mind to extend this period of absolute random ignorant pure play.

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@hans You don't ever have to learn the traditional way, unless you want to be able to perform an existing song using sheet music as a reference. I do what you do and just play around with it. I have been studying music theory a bit, as it's fun to learn different chords and scales. But yeah, I could either learn how to play one song from sheet music, or create several original songs in the same timeframe. I find it more rewarding to improvise.

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@hans Well, in that case yeah, it's maybe good to have one song that you know by heart. But then when you're done with it and they're suitably impressed, they'll say, "Another!", so that means you'll need to practice at least two songs, three to be safe. Orrr, if you learn to improvise, you don't need to bother with rote memorization, and you can play as much as you like for them. And they'll probably get bored and move on after just a couple of minutes!

My pet peeve with speculative fiction / sci-fi is that even the more radical visions rarely remove the idea of nuclear families as the default way to bring up offspring, and monogamous forever-relationships as a legal institution.

I can only think of Ursula K Le Guin and Ian McDonald who have gone there.

Do you know other authors?

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@twilliability In Martha Wells' fantastic Murderbot series, there are many non-traditional family units featured. It's a very progressive series overall. Especially in that all the things related to polyamory, different genders, sexualities, roles, etc. are presented as completely normal and acceptable. It's the transition of perception from thing to person of the self-named Murderbot, a cybernetic Security Unit, that is the crux of the novels and novellas.

I got complimented at the grocery store by how quick and efficiently I bagged the stuff. Maybe I should leave software development and focus in my true calling: bagging groceries at the supermarket.

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@alvaromontoro I also find it satisfying to perform well in life's many mini-games. That and packing a car for a trip or moving-truck for a move can be enjoyable as a seldom-done task, but I feel like it would get old pretty fast as a job.

photography tip: the closer you can get the camera to your subject, the better the photo will turn out, no exceptions

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@davepagurek
Based on Robert Capa's quote, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough," I think you've found the best way to do portrait photography. I tried with my macro lens from an inch away, but it's harder to tell who the person is just from a view of the iris. So, fisheye lens for the win.

For the last two years I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening to Today" links here. Mastodon has some problems with threads containing hundreds of posts, so I re-create the thread once a year.

If you'd like to see, here's my "year two" thread: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/110266770603341546

Or, alternately, every song from year two in the least practical format possible: A 301-song, 38-hour YouTube playlist (note: video #1 contains flashing):

@pyromuffin @mcc Yessss. I finally got to see Knower live last week in Minneapolis after being a fan for many years (sometimes it sucks to live so far inland), and I'm still vibrating. What an awesome show. Being 15 feet away from that much creative energy and skill on display is quite the rush. Those full orchestra concerts are just incredible. I'm so envious of people who can go see those live. I love his composition style.

noticing my food costs a lot more lately & starting to wonder how well i could get along at my age just living on sandwiches & ramen.

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@tsrono better stock up on multivitamins if you're going that route, unless you make fairly complex versions. Yeah, food prices are going up super fast. I grew at least a few hundred dollars worth of food from a modest garden last year. And buying bulk whole foods when they're on sale saved me a lot.

@alvaromontoro Great comics as always! On a related note, I started coding my new personal website last fall using a Hugo template which included Tailwind. I struggled but got pretty far along, though I had to take a break to work on a big project. Now, I really want to complete my site, but I'm sort of dreading getting back into it. I can find plenty of good resources on migrating TO Tailwind, but nothing on migrating FROM it. Please sensei, could you recommend a good way to go from here?

a couple of months ago i wasn’t even sure if i was going to keep the Squarp Hapax, & honestly i’m still not 100% locked in on it, as good as it is…but they just dropped a silver faceplate swap for it & im so close to nabbing it, looks pretty fuckin sweet imo.

Yes. Well worth it. And yeah, once wifi became so good, suddenly, ethernet cables became less useful/necessary. But what are we gonna do, throw them away? No. They might be needed someday. When I win the lotto and get that sweet rural gigabit connection.

What are some nice tracks that have everything hard panned either left or right? Particularly tracks beyond the early stereo era when crazy panning was the default. Orbital's input out is one example but there must be more examples.. People should do this more

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@yaxu Cornelius' OST for Ghost In The Shell: ARISE does that a lot. I especially like the track "Surfing on Mind Waves". https://youtu.be/Xq89-0HjxwI?si=9N4DB2Bq9zJxEZ8J

    I made a quick sketch of an idea I had. I wanted to arrange 3D shapes on a toroidal surface and cycle them around the minor axis. It turned out pretty nice! I scaled things to match the rotation, and added some extra spin on the boxes. The boxes are color shifted from red to blue around the ring.
    You can also switch to a side view of it, though the weirdness of the transparency calcs don't allow things to look quite like how I wanted from that angle.

    I like how many configurations I can get out of such a simple system. I wonder why more graphic designers don't use or some other creative coding platform? Or maybe they do and I'm just not aware of it. I really like John Maeda's typography based designs. He must have inspired some others out there.

    @curved_ruler I really like Obsidian. It's for markdown format, so it's better for general note-taking or writing for web pages, more than for writing a book or something.

    @curved_ruler
    Oh, I see. Well, obsidian has tons of user plug-ins. Seems like this one may work for you?

    Metamere,
    @Metamere@genart.social avatar

    @curved_ruler
    Okay then, I guess Obsidian isn't going to work, sorry. The only coding I do on on my phone is just minor edits to my p5.js scripts on OpenProcessing.org, and that sometimes doesn't work very well. The best option I just found on F-Droid is Acode Editor, so I'm going to give it a try. It may work better. Btw, F-droid is a better place to search for FOSS options for apps than the Google store. There are also apps for watching YT videos ad-free and other such things.
