Generative Artist, Creative Coder

Background in M.E. and generative design (aero degree), traditional drawing, sculpture, photography, music, adventure.

I'm seeking my way forwards as an artist. I'm here to learn, have fun, make friends, and to create and share a lot of cool stuff. I want to help make the world a better place. I believe in the golden rule—treat others as you want to be treated.

You might recall my interactive #opticalillusion collection that I've worked on this year. I got stuck on one, then focused on other projects, but I finally made something new and different for it this week. I experimented with a new system I call Dazzle, Tilt, Zigzag, in which I have found several different illusions. They're not new effects, but the compositions are, and the system is fun to play around with. See the alt texts for more details.

#CreativeCoding #OpArt

The large vertical white and black columns appear to tilt to the left.
The rectangle shapes appear to bulge outwards.
The portions between the blue/green rectangles appear to be different color/brightness than the rest of the purple/orange background

Here's a video demonstrating some of the patterns that emerge in this system as you click the left or right mouse buttons (or one or two finger touch) and drag around the screen. This is with the V option selected to switch it to the lower contrast color variant.

Here's another interesting #opticalillusion I found in it by converting one config of the color variant to grayscale and then increasing the contrast and rotating it. The line grid network seems to be very distorted and wavy to me.

When you practice for long enough, and train yourself to watch for interesting light, color, texture, composition, etcetera, you'll start to see beautiful moments in even the most mundane of places and activities, such as while washing the dishes in your kitchen sink. Sometimes you get the chance to capture the moment and share it, which is a wonderful feeling.

@TodePond You also messed with my mind, making me think there was a gnat on my monitor. 😅

I do love playing around with interactive elements like that. I've been adding some stuff like that to my WIP website, but I don't want to make it too busy. I think I'll apply it more selectively where it can have some occasional impact without being distracting. Like in this element I added a couple of weeks ago.

A video showing the interaction with a complex spiral image on my About page. On hover, over five seconds, it rotates 90 degrees and the corners become more rounded until it becomes a circle. The border also changes color. Then it reverses the process when you stop hovering over it.

@fractalkitty @codepen Nice! Congrats on that and on completing the challenge so well. Though I couldn't help but notice that they referred to the event as Mathtober, which is what my brain tried to do EVERY time I read the word Mathober.

What is in a cloud, what is in a sunset? Do you see only a pretty scene, or do you see the end of a day, or the turning of our world, the scattering of light in the atmosphere, the interaction of photons sent from Sol with nitrogen, oxygen, water, dust, and your own wonderful eyes?

The previous image, with color and levels adjusted to bring out hidden details. The colors are still somewhat believable, but just a bit too vivid and high contrast.

Does anyone else have trouble posting videos on Mastodon? Often when I try to upload a video (say 20seconds long) it gets stuck indefinitely at “processing” and doesn’t let me post. Any suggestions?! I want to be sharing more here!

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@stevejtrettel I had a lot of trouble with that as well. It does depend a bit on the instance. Some things I found out can cause issues: format, dimensions, and especially size. On my instance I need to keep it to 10-15 MB, even though 40 is the purported limit. So try with smaller sizes as an experiment. I found that 600 pixels wide or so can still look just fine on mobile, and I can usually make long enough videos that way.

despite spending the day pretty productively, I find myself struggling mightily with feelings of being an impostor of many things. I know much of it is related to the proximity of Halloween, and I've written before how irrationally this holiday messes with me.

I just wish I could turn on some confidence in my abilities, but looking around my brain is fixating on the things I can't do, rather than the things I can

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@TomLarrow Thanks for sharing. I used to enjoy that day a lot as a kid, but I eventually realized how big of a tacky, commercial, wasteful, unhealthy mess of a holiday it is. It falls the day before my birthday, and I'm really glad I wasn't born a few hours earlier. As I've grown older, I've also started feeling more down in the week leading up to it. When the leaves have fallen, the skies are grey, the gardens withered, and I wonder how many more I will get to see.

@TodePond 1000 x YES! I don't want to have to use separate sites for sharing photos, videos, generative art, CG art, traditional art, code, poems, songs, 3D print designs, 3D models, weblog posts, links, ideas, stories, life updates, my resume, my portfolio. I don't want to log in to 16 different places. I don't want 16 services that either change too much or eventually die off. That is why I'm working on my own website. I'll take back every scattered piece to build something whole and complete.

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@TodePond True, there will still be a use for Mastodon and Discord and a few other things. I decided it wasn't worth it to try to integrate comments into my weblog, partly because of how little discussion there is on the typical weblog post, partly because of how laggy and shady Disqus integration would be. Using Mastodon will help keep discussions more consolidated as well.

A dev friend is going through an "interesting" experience at work. She got a new manager a few months back and, since then, he has blocked her from getting training, blocked her from leading projects (or getting a promotion), only allow her to do training he supervises and decides (gets mad if she does training on the side, even if it's free or paid by her), and now is giving her surprise tests on different topics (React, JS, TS, C#...) trying to get her to fail and have a reason to fire her.

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@alvaromontoro That's really tough. Sometimes people just have to learn things the hard way. Or maybe they deny things and never learn. But if you can find people who have gone through the same scenario who will try to help her realize how awful this situation is, that might be a way to get through to her.

I was so busy with a chainsaw trying to clear several dead ash trees that had floated down the creek and had created an impromptu dam that I almost didn't turn around and appreciate the beauty behind me

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@TomLarrow Nice. I had an instance of that earlier this week. I was in the yard watching a nice sunset evolve, snapping some pictures, when I started to feel a few raindrops. After a minute, I thought to myself, "Hey, I wonder if there's a rainbow?" Sure enough, right behind me, there was an incredible double rainbow. I could see at least a couple of repeats in the main bow, too. Thank goodness I know enough about how they work to always know when and where to search for them.

Metamere,

@miriamrobern You too can become a good-enough-ist, by changing the way you go about learning new things! Just mess around. It's that simple. Make noise music, make messy doodles, take bad photos and laugh about them, grow pathetic, weird, yet strangely tasty vegetables in a garden, and more! Eventually, bad results will become slightly less bad. Eventually, you too can be good enough at something to satisfy even your inner critic! Call 1-800-555-GOOD today to find out more!

Playing with the Voderberg tiles. They can make a spiral tessellation, a circular disk, and a periodic tessellation of the plane.

FYI: here's the 3D-printable file https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6262676

Looks like it! It just might not be possible to fabricate tiles with the precision required for that on an FDM printer.

I may have gotten a little carried away with styling the blockquotes for my WIP website, but I really like the effect. I did a fade in gradient from top to bottom, with side borders matching the color at the bottom. I think it's a big improvement in readability and style over the original versions. And in case you're wondering, no, I have no idea why the text is a bit thicker for the dark mode version. Ah, the joys of modifying a template.

Wow, that was eye-opening. And a bit depressing. I had heard of some of those cryptocurrency frauds, hacks, scams, etc., but the frequency and overall amounts are astounding. Why are we all so susceptible? So many expect absurd returns on their investments. I'm really glad that the most involvement I've had is purchasing some cool and inexpensive art on FX Hash with Tezos, and I never really expected it to go up in value. It's more about the culture and community for me.
