I'm sick rn (just a cold) and it's driving me crazy. I hate how you just have to pass time and wait to feel better, I wish there was something active I could do to speed it up.

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@aebrer I struggle with that too, mostly during the worst of winter, and I often get pretty wiped out. I hope you get well soon. There are a few active things I do to speed up the process. Lots of sleep of course. I drink tea constantly, mainly honey lemon throat comfort tea by Yogi Teas, and I use a neti pot twice a day. I cook big batches of congee, with white rice in lots of water (10:1, 40 minutes), scallions, carrots, mushrooms, eggs, and lots of black pepper, oil, sauces, chicken bouillon.

Bad faith actors try to control conversations by derailing them.

They have a ton of tactics and this post isn't comprehensive.

Here are a few I've seen today on my afternoon break scrolling this feed.

  • false dichotomy (narrowing the focus to 2 options even when they are not the only two options)

  • straw men (arguing against something nobody said because it's easier than really engaging in actual discussion)

  • changing the subject/whataboutism (if they can't engage on what you're talking about they will try to shortcut you to focus on another issue)

  • equivocation (using ambiguity to make two or more disparate situations to seem comparable)

  • context free takes (purposefully ignoring details that are important to understanding the situation, they will remove all context from a situation to reduce it to something they can argue against, to them nothing is racist, sexist, or wrong because if they remove enough facts from the situation they can spin it as "ok")

-making false claims (they lie, a lot, and they do it without shame or apology and will return to the lie over and over even after they have been shown it's not true)

hyperbolic nonsense (they are all or nothing, if you make a claim that a thing happened one time they will insist you said it ALWAYS happens every time and then argue that because it didn't happen in one instance it never did )

shifting goalposts (they will make a claim and when it is proven false, they will shift to another claim without admitting they were wrong on the first one, they will conflate your inability to refute a deluge of other claims (all bogus) with your inability to refute any of them and will continue to repeat all the false claims as if they were not refuted at all)

gish-galloping (when cornered they will begin to post links repeatedly even if they refute their own claims, even if they don't have ANYTHING to do with what you're talking about. 10-20 links per one comment of yours, just an avalanche of misinformation or information, hoping you will waste time actually clicking on them and they will claim victory)

refusal to answer direct questions (they will NEVER answer a direct question, they will either shift goal posts, change the subject, or ask you a question)

dismissal without reason (if they are unable to refute any of your points or prove their claim they will eventually resort to stating you believe the "narrative" you want to, and then begin in on character assassination by calling you things like "a shill" or "a libtard" or "a sheep")

My advice is to avoid engaging directly with these people at all. They are playing a game and people who are witnessing it are not equipped to pick up on it and tend to side with whoever seems most aggressive. It's not that you can't refute their claims, feel free, just ignore them when they start freaking out and doing all this.

If they start it on your page block them. They will throw a huge fit about censorship and free speech and echo chambers and safe spaces, but you can feel free to ignore that because you're not hurting someone by refusing to listen to hateful claptrap. You're just not.

They don't have anything useful to say anyway, they are only there to derail actual conversations by using the tactics listed above and as soon as they employ any it's best to shut it down if you can. It goes nowhere and it is actually not a useful conversation and will never be one.

Metamere,

@Quenby Wow, I'm really glad my feed here has never had any of that junk. Just cool art, mathematics, geeky stuff, social awareness, civil discussions, all good stuff. That's a really good summary of annoying stuff I've seen on Twitter and Reddit over the years though. I'm not sad to be missing that.

I spotted a robin gathering nest materials in the shady backyard birdbath waterfall, which is an ideal place for moss to grow. I watched it make several trips, where it would rip off a chunk, look around, and repeat several times, then fly off with a huge mouthful of damp moss. It looked like it's going to need a bath after that nest-building session. That sighting just made my day. @Ostdrossel, I thought you would enjoy this.

This picture shows the robin with its breast all ruffled, damp and dirty, from how it is building its nest by pressing the moss into place.

The this week, "Why Is The Sky Blue" turned out some nice results. I worked out a way to approximate Rayleigh scattering by altitude with help from Dave and Ruben from the discord group, and then unfortunately had to throw that out and go with a simpler method that would produce more artistic results with less CPU usage. Oh well, I'll use it eventually. This image is from the 33 minute mark, though it looks pretty cool even a short while in.

Been missing plotting! I did this last night, as the thunderstorm rolled in. Created with my own rayhatcher.

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@twilliability Sweet! I've been trying to figure out the formula for that middle shape without just doing each edge individually. Did you figure out an efficient way?

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@twilliability I had forgotten about that reference, thanks! I guess that works. It's efficient in that it's all in one function, and that's probably as simple as he could get it, so I don't feel bad about not seeing an easy way to make it. SDFs can definitely be more complex than their equivalents in the old constructive solid geometry I'm used to from Raytracing.

Discovered an interesting new rule. It started as a bug, but with a little tweaking it became the Borg Nebula.

The exciting thing is it runs on the web, and soon anyone will be able to try this and much more!

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@GenPhoto Wow, that's really cool! I'm looking forwards to trying it out.

Just how tone deaf do you have to be to send out a mass mailing announcing the availability of your new all electric vehicle, but printed on non-recyclable paper and enclosed in a single-use plastic envelope?

Thanks Nissan! 💩

Metamere,
@Metamere@genart.social avatar

@jeffpalmer Yeah, that's a bit amusing. I doubt they put much thought into things like that, or that you'll find many environmentalists among the leadership of any major automaker. For that matter, I doubt most automakers are working on electric vehicles because it's the responsible thing to do. They all seem to be getting dragged forwards reluctantly by regulations and major trends. Any big manufacturer has a lot of inertia, which is why new companies have had some success with EVs.

I made a curation of 21 of the sketches I made on Open Processing. It's nice to see them together and in the proper order, though I really need to make a retrospective article where I can fill in the gaps with the other projects and explanations. I've definitely referred back to these many times for code snippets, but I still want to develop some of them into larger projects down the road.

Edit: D'oh! It might help to post the link:

Here's a weird experiment from yesterday.
The left shape is a distorted sphere, and the right is a distorted cylinder. It's fun to morph shapes with sine functions.

U(L(B((x+20).8-y/B(x/4+z/2+3)),
(y+9)
.85, z+5) - 20
+2*B(sin(x/2)) + sin(z/2+x),

L((x-22)/5+sin(z/2), (y+15)/5)-3)

I think it's really cool that a bit over half a year on Mastodon, the ratio of my mutual follows to non is right around 50%. That makes it feel like a much more tight knit community than Twitter ever did. It's also still a smaller community/following (not that I expected to be famous at this point), but it's growing, slowly but surely. On the one hand, I'd love for the rest of the generative art community to join in here, but on the other, I don't want things to get any worse over there.

    @twilliability Happy solstice! Though mine was yesterday morning. About 15.5 hours of daylight here in Minnesota at 45° N. Looks like you're at 52.5°—I didn't realize Berlin was so far north! That would be up in Canada, here. I'm not a big fan of having the sun so high and hot by 8 am, but at least the garden is growing quickly (almost too quickly to manage)

    This week's addition to the collection, "angled dango" is a fun one I had bookmarked, with columns of balls with angled connecting lines that cause it to all appear tilted. Dango are a wonderful Japanese street food treat. The code is a bit rough, but good enough, and I like the interaction design and aesthetic. I updated the sketch so that the current week's illusion will be the starting one, regardless of where I put it in the set.

    I delved deeper into the awesome Universal Rayhatcher made by @piterpasma. Working with SDFs, especially in 3D, is a mind-expanding and surprisingly enjoyable experience. After many experiments, I was able to realize my vision, "Terraces Under A World Tree", inspired by the Longji Rice Terraces in Guilin, China. What do you think Piter, is this on the right level to add to the collection? I'm looking forward to trying out configurable and generative systems.

    I made two interactive sketches this week based on black and white op-art works from the 1960s by Bridget Riley. I tried to make them accurate and efficient, and see how they could be transformed. An untitled work known as "Winged Curves" gave me a lot of trouble, but it turned out really well, and has a nice 3D effect. Today I had an easier time recreating a work titled "Opening", though it was still a decent challenge.

    Real-life fractal zoom with added rotation! With the extra degree of freedom in the system, the feedback control code got quite a bit more complicated (I'm not sure how much the extra complexity helped).

    @henryseg That's dope! We're you able to just crossfire the video, or did you have to do something fancy to make it align perfectly?
