Generative Artist, Creative Coder

Background in M.E. and generative design (aero degree), traditional drawing, sculpture, photography, music, adventure.

I'm seeking my way forwards as an artist. I'm here to learn, have fun, make friends, and to create and share a lot of cool stuff. I want to help make the world a better place. I believe in the golden rule—treat others as you want to be treated.

The this week was "space-filling algorithms", and the group had a ton of really good contributions.

I chose to create a diffusion limited aggregation system. It was something that I explored in my early code art days over 20 years ago, so it felt good to be able to whip up something much better in a fraction of the time. There are several variations, and it's fun to watch it slowly build up.

You can run it here:
https://openprocessing.org/sketch/2173992

With the lines extended and rotations applied, it gets an interesting jittered texture and seems more natural/organic.
Here it is shown only built up part way. The streaking effect is applied to the movement layer.
And here it is completed. The longer lines give it a deeper aerial mountain view appearance.

    @paul_ipv6 @beep When I designed my first personal website 23 years ago, I was able to study other websites out there, copy and paste, and modify. Easy. I learned as I went. And I really did only have to design for one screen size and browser back then, for my purposes. Now, even trying to modify a TEMPLATE, I have to change things in four places to affect a single element and test it in a dozen ways. Maybe half a dozen sizes in either orientation. And peeping site code is a lost cause.

    @twilliability I recall one simple game a year or two back where you had to convince the chatbot to give up a password, and each time you succeeded, it would get harder. It was amusing, but the last level was basically impossible, since they were trying to prove how good their security was. There's definitely some potential, so I'm sure more are working with it.

    @sophie Ha! Yeah, I wish the gender ratio was unity here (and elsewhere). I was curious, so I looked into the stats, and as of the end of 2022, it was at about 66% male, 33% female. Twitter at around that time was 63% to 37%, surprisingly not all that different.

    Metamere,
    @Metamere@genart.social avatar

    @Pumaparded Yeah, it's really cool. Some of my early CG experiments involved using images to create height fields. It would have been so cool to be able to morph things like this in real-time, rather than having to wait several minutes for even a tiny still image to render.

    , "code for one hour" went okay. I started from scratch, and realized I wasn't going to get my initial concept to work in time, so I changed tack. It's animated and interactive.

    https://openprocessing.org/sketch/2158527

    I felt that the output image looked better edited to grayscale mode and with the contrast boosted, so that seemed like a good direction to explore from that base. The last two images are from a fork that I worked on for two hours afterwards.

    The previous image converted to grayscale with contrast boosted.
    A fork of the initial sketch, which I'll probably count towards a different day's topic. It's varying the shade, rather than the hue, with a saturation of 0. I edited the image to increase the contrast. I'm not sure how to make it like this in the sketch. Very low opacity tend to make things lower contrast.
    A fork of the initial sketch, which I'll probably count towards a different day's topic. I applied the posterize filter to limit it to four shades.

    I combined and to make a re-creation of a cool texture pic from my phone, while also growing from seeds (i.e. seed crystals). I positioned the clusters using a Poisson disc sampling code from @AaronReuland (which was adapted from Daniel Shiffman's code). It would be fun to delve further into this. Needs more sparkles, at least.

    You can run it here to see it grow:
    https://openprocessing.org/sketch/2156827

    An ice crystal texture I made using p5.js today, in an attempt to emulate the one in the previous image. Contrast and brightness adjusted slightly.

    When you push the sliders way too far 👾

    Metamere,
    @Metamere@genart.social avatar

    @camillerouxart Nice. I always test the extremes of any system, so I can find where things break or get really cool. Sometimes, I find I can push a parameter out further and expand the design space. With every setting at the limit, there will usually be fewer good results, but they will tend to be unique and intriguing like this.

    For the topic of "Impossible objects (undecided geometry)", I just had to add to my collection. I made an interactive version of Reutersvärd's Triangle. It's the original (and my favorite) version of the later discovered and more widely known Penrose Triangle.

    Try it out here:
    https://openprocessing.org/sketch/1941150

    a differently colored version
    The default, greyscale version of the illusion. I like how the negative space forms the star of David in the middle.
    Here with things looking a bit flatter, and with the triangles used to reverse the overlap outlined, the method of constructing the illusion is revealed.

    Metamere,
    @Metamere@genart.social avatar

    I made a couple videos to demonstrate the interactive nature of the illusion. Here is the basic size control of the "cubes".

    new music up soon: split release with Blush to the Snow who i've been a huge fan of since he started releasing music a few years ago. it's all on the ambient/drifting/calming tip but there's a bit of drama & a touch of some unknown in there as well. 2 tracks up now, give them a listen & a share if you're feeling them.

    My 11 year old never adjusted his bedtime back from 8:00pm even though all his friends stay up until 9 or 10

    He gets up early and reads books, practices piano, or watches history docs on Nebula

    While a great habit to have, as we approach Christmas he's been getting up earlier as excitement builds

    With the struggles with my neck, I slept in the recliner, and was woken up by him at 4:30 not knowing I was there, and again at 5:30 to see if I still was

    It's going to be a 2:00am Christmas morning

    Metamere,
    @Metamere@genart.social avatar

    @TomLarrow Well, you can start a new tradition of opening presents on Christmas Eve, as many people do. Let them stay up late playing with presents, then you can request quiet the next morning as a special favor, but they'll probably sleep in anyways.
