A fun activity: reading up on some Discord channels, getting really concerned for someone's safety / mental wellbeing based on some actions they're describing, and then spotting I'm reading the channel

The formation of the Open Home Foundation is incredibly encouraging to see. I already know the folks behind and the related projects' principles very much align with my own, so it's great to see that codified.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes, but I am very optimistic. There's not many pieces of software I feel so entirely pleased about using.

@xorgrox I'm really glad the website has remained up after Ray's passing, it's an absolute treasure trove. I've built and adapted many of the designs published on there.

Going hog wild with labels on after the 2024.4 update

MichDdev,
@MichDdev@mastodon.social avatar

@motoridersd I usually update about mid-month, but this one is definitely the most exciting update I've seen in a long while... might jump on it sooner :D

Yes another post-

Extremely damned hype for upcoming album "What happened to the heart" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTRDSb-6vsE

New single released yesterday, "Some Type Of Skin" is fab, easily my favourite out of the 3 recent singles. (The other two are "The Conflict Of The Mind" and "Your Blood")

Really looking forward to whenever a new album (supposedly containing these tracks) comes out. I've definitely never been this into an artist's work before.

For anyone keeping score, we just published the 50,000th post on @hackaday

I've added a note to the top of the post to mark the occasion. The fact that it's about something as oddball as the right to repair ice cream machines seems particularly on brand for us.

We've rolled out a new feature on mastodon.social. You now have access to notification settings and can decide who you want to get notifications from. Everyone else will be put into notification requests you can peruse separately. There's a fresh coat of paint as well!

@Gargron Really digging the new dark theme as I see it on the deck interface. :)

Listening to amazing music and that need to tell people about how good it is even though it's never gonna hit the same way for whoever sees me telling them about it, that mood.

Really enjoying boygenius - Not Strong Enough and some of their other tracks from "the record" right now.

Alright crew, I'm looking for help:

I want to buy a smart plug that:

  • does not tell everyone in China what I am doing
  • actually does not use any cloud service
  • works nice with Home Assistant
  • measures power usage

Any suggestions?

MichDdev,
@MichDdev@mastodon.social avatar

@stfn Here in the UK I've been using the @localbytesshop plugs with Tasmota pre-flashed - https://www.mylocalbytes.com/products/smart-plug-pm and they've been working well for me.

MichDdev,
@MichDdev@mastodon.social avatar

@stfn @localbytesshop Gotcha yeah. They sell an EU equivalent, but that leaves the shipping. I think they're pretty generic plugs (amazon sells similar looking ones under many brands), but if you get them elsewhere you'd probably have to DIY flashing decent firmware (tasmota/esphome) onto it. :/

Electronics knowwits - I've got a mosfet here where the gate is going to get 1.5v when it's "on", I'm trying to read the datasheet, but I think it's saying the max the source can be is 1.2v (or is that the triggering max edge and everything else is moot)?

MichDdev,
@MichDdev@mastodon.social avatar

@rem The threshold here is the maximum on threshold voltage any one instance of these components can have- so if you design to supply more than this voltage as an "on" voltage, you can be sure it will indeed turn any one instance of these mosfets on. The min/max in these columns denote the tolerance in which these components are manufactured. For the maximum voltages / currents etc you can apply to this, the "absolute maximum ratings" tables apply.

MichDdev,
@MichDdev@mastodon.social avatar

@rem So the 1.5V is great here, as it's nicely above the max threshold voltage. If it were between 0.6 and 1.2V, it would turn the mosfet on for some of these mosfets but not others.

MichDdev,
@MichDdev@mastodon.social avatar

@rem Meanwhile the maximum voltage you can apply to the gate (with respect to the source) is +12V, and minimum -12V; going outside this range may damage the mosfet.

My friend doesn't believe me that when I turn on the hot tap I can hear the water turn warm/hot.

Tell me I'm not the only one that's noticed this very useful change in pitch that tells you when the water is nice and toasty?

People pointing out they're not the perceived target audience for some piece of music before professing their love for it in the youtube comments never ceases to amuse me.

It's okay friend, you're allowed to like whatever music you want, you don't need anyone's approval
