Moonrise2473,

But the European market is also pushing bigger cars and SUV.

The smart is now a 4 meters SUV

The Volkswagen up (small 4 person car) is out of production and they’re selling nothing under 4 meters

The fiat panda (another small 4 person car) is in the process of being redesigned and the mockups look like a huge range rover SUV

Skoda, after retiring the citigo, has the Fabia that’s relatively small (almost 4 meters) and the rest are huge

Most automakers are giving up on the cheap and small compact car segment, leaving a big gap for Chinese automakers

Moonrise2473,

nvme for videos seems expensive for nothing, unless you are serving 4k videos over a 10gbit connection to multiple users

Moonrise2473,

intel gpu = any integrated graphics from any intel cpu made in the last 8 years. This includes those crusty $10 celerons, don’t need a dedicated intel arc gpu (unless you’re streaming to dozens users at the same time)

Young women in Saudi Arabia sentenced to 11 years in prison by "anti-terrorism court" after being arrested for “her choice of clothing and support for women’s rights” (www.theguardian.com)

Saudi officials confirmed in a statement to the United Nations high commissioner for human rights that Manahel al-Otaibi was sentenced on 9 January for what the Saudi government called “terrorist offences”....

Moonrise2473,

And then they’re spending billions to try sportwashing their bloody image. Isn’t much cheaper to just be decent in human rights? Then people would like you even without your billions

Moonrise2473,

How much they could have possibly saved, considering also the expensive skilled labor to install it? £100 on a £2000 kitchen?

Moonrise2473,

Here in Florence the ruling mayor is playing with fire. Just a few months before the election they:

  1. Declared the whole city area “special traffic zone” to ban all the old polluting cars, installing hundreds of cameras to automatically fine trespassers
  2. Created bike lanes (real lanes, not just paint a line on the street) by narrowing streets
  3. Spending millions to create new tram lines (and that means narrowing or closing streets)
  4. Installing new Speed cameras on 4 lanes roads that are set to give fines with an extremely low tolerance like 1 over the limit
  5. Giving the traffic police new equipment that scans the license plates and automatically fines cars with expired tax, insurance, biannual inspection

The traffic police has really got the hang on giving fines. There’s a 90% increase from past year, we’re the number one city in italy, with 200 euro of car fines per Capita! That’s insane if you calculate that even babies are included.

So… good, right? All the carbrains are pissed! “They want to take away our cars!” The elections for the new Mayor are in two months and the other populist parties are basically saying “we are going to undo all of this, cancel the tram, remove the speed cameras”

Between my circle the opinion is that the mayor went too far and the ruling party must be removed.

And all those fines that are coming just before the election aren’t going to help.

I’m an hypermiler and I drive really slow to save energy but I personally got 3 fines by driving 1 kmh over the limit on a 4 lanes road coming out from the highway. Can’t imagine the typical rage filled carbrain how many fines got over there. (Context: in Italy the traffic police is extremely slow in processing fines. They install a new Speed camera and the fines arrive 4-6 months later. People unaware of that will get dozens of fines to pay. At work I heard people complaining about getting 15 fines in the same road - that’s 3000 euro - he would definitely remember this when he’s going to vote)

The same party is doing advertising like “we want a cleaner Europe” [photo of polluting industries], or “we want a solidary Europe” [photo of migrants dying in the sea] or “we want more families” [photo of hands in front of a pride flag].

I’m scared that with a campaign like this, the populist far right party has easier life. People are scared of change and are going to vote the asshole that is saying “yes cars, no pollution limits, no migrants, no gay families”.

Since the war, here the left Always won the elections, but would pissing the carbrains, xenophobes and homophobes change the situation?

Moonrise2473,

Exactly, the timing is completely wrong. But the mayor is like “but I promised this in 2019 and I show that I keep promises”.

In other cities before elections instead they’re fixing potholes to get votes from the drivers lol

Moonrise2473,

My bank, they had the Oracle experts to take care of the Data center and they experienced a whole week of downtime. In 2024, a week of downtime for a bank. Imagine the cost of that.

Don’t understand the companies that they’re intentionally going with Oracle

Moonrise2473,

The photo is already ruined by the market in front. People for some reason want the convenience store and the mountain in the same shot

Moonrise2473,

Yes I mean, having a store in the photo, for me it’s ruined. Instead they like it more lol

Moonrise2473,

Owncloud infinite scale is a rewrite of owncloud(=nextcloud) in go, it supports local, nfs and S3 mounts. Change the smb share to nfs and it might fit you

Disadvantages are:

  1. All the plugins need to be rewritten, so if you need some extra feature, it’s going to be missing
  2. They got acquired by a company that sells an expensive alternative for corporations (RIP? Who is paying millions to maintain a free alternative/competitor?)
  3. Documentation is inferior, community is much smaller
Moonrise2473,

Some summary amputation could be granted though

Moonrise2473,

every laptop that’s on sale right now under $600 has less than 16gb of RAM

it’s not compatible with windows 11, but today apple is still selling $1500 laptops with 8gb of RAM

Moonrise2473,

Amazing price but I see $699 when browsing from Italy the USA store (and not available at all in Italian store)

If it was available in my country for that price I’d buy it even if my laptop is still newish

Moonrise2473,

I noticed that the prices of SSD almost doubled in the last months. I bought a 2tb nvme for 89 euro and now it requires almost the double

WD and Seagate are using the AI hype as an excuse to increase prices on both SSD and HDD. They say AI bros are buying too many drives to store the models. I find this not really believable. Normal models are a few hundred GB, I don’t think that they’re pushing so much the demand

Moonrise2473,

I’m also using that drive but it likes to stay toasty, it’s always in a 60-65° C range even with a low activity

I don’t really like that. Bought an heatsink and it improved a bit

Moonrise2473,

Bought two and one of those died within 72 hours.

It was really weird, first it became read-only, then it zeroed by itself, but it still was read-only, no program was able to write on it, even aban (dban is dead)

Now the replacement has more than 2 years but i downgraded it in a low activity server

Moonrise2473,

With the prices I saw, just a few prints costs like buying an ender 3 but without the fun of maintenance

Moonrise2473,

29 days is counted until the end of the three months trial in July. So it’s every weekend + every holiday, like 120 days per year

Moonrise2473,

Doesn’t help that every nextcloud official announcement promises the moon while delivering not even stardust.

Example: this blog post from two years ago: nextcloud.com/…/plan-your-next-trip-with-nextclou…

None of the features written in that post are available, even today

It’s something that it might be coming in a decade if someone is inspired by the mockups and codes it. When you install the maps plugin it shows a map of the world, and that’s it.

If they need to announce a concept that only exists as a mockup, either publish the news on April 1st or write “concept of how maps might integrate with nextcloud 50”

Moonrise2473,

I’m using nextcloud and I like it (also I don’t see all this slowness even if I run it on a core i3 8100) but it’s the general stance from the devs

Everything it’s announced like it’s ready to the public when it’s just a proof of concept (not even alpha)

Another example is the mail plugin. It’s an unusable early alpha yet on the blog there are three posts starting from four years ago talking about inexistent features nextcloud.com/?s=Mail&wpessid=1612

Same for the forms plugin. Early alpha that doesn’t have an essential feature like emailing responses to specific addresses (it sends notifications via nextcloud). Again the blog talks 4 years ago like it’s ready for everyone.

Or the Trello clone. Many problems like it “ruins” the tasks sync by creating read-only tasks that get synced via caldav.

Or nextcloud photos, big post in 2022 but it’s very barebone

Or docs, so many posts yet it has so many problems.

Or the desktop client, where builds are pushed to regular users without testing the installer script (forced reboots without confirmation, crashing explorer.exe instead of asking a graceful restart)

The only NC plugin that I’m using without problems and that I feel it passed the beta stage is Music and its subsonic compatible server. No blog posts about it. Maybe because it’s hosted on owncloud GitHub repository
