I really feel like no new form of audio synthesis has been invented for a long time. I wonder when we'll discover something completely new next time.

I really miss X's quote post feature when I'm on Mastodon (no, I will not say twitter and quote tweet, I'm gonna blaze my glory and do things the way our LORD, Elon wants!)

I mean, I totally get why not include quote tooting to prevent dunking and the toxicity that comes with it. So maybe it's the right decision. But when used not to dunk, it's such a useful feature!

Best superpower? Big open world game completed! What happens after when you load the game?

A: Return to the story before you beat the final boss.
B: Continue after the story is done, but enemies & dangers still roam the world.
C: The danger is over, no more enemies to fight. You get to explore how the world has changed and talk to people.
D: Something completely different!

Best superpower? It's dinner time! You can only use this power once.

A: The best meal that has ever existed and will ever exist for all eternity, customized 100% for your specific taste. You forget the taste and experience after 24 hours.

B: The second best meal you've ever eaten. You'll remember it.

Out of curiosity, how anxious are you about interacting with people you overall align/agree with on social media, but you don't know super well?

Best superpower? If you write down what you remember of a dream you'll make that part come true. or you can turn false or misleading news articles into reality.

The power doesn't work if you try to influence the dream or news article. It doesn't work on satirical news either.

It's too difficult for me to manage two social networks at the same time, posting different content to them.

I think I avoided tooting the same thing here as my tweets because someone said they're not interested in following people who do.

But maybe it's an acceptable thing to do? What do you say?

I think the most kickass feature any IDE could have would be wizard that does "analyze code in these assemblies and change the IDE's code style settings to match it".

For every style option, if there's not a 90% (customizable) consensus in the code, it should ask how to resolve every ambiguity.

Then finally the wizard should ask me if I want to format the rest of the code with these rules and fix inconsistencies.

Probably very hard to implement tho :)

I want to share a discovery I made on twitter, but turns out it works on Mastodon too!

I have figured out how to embed a videogame in a toot. Here's a proof of concept I made: An Asteroids clone set in a universe where time doesn't exist.

You can try it right here! Enjoy!

Audio people!

We have a word for changing pitch without affecting speed (pitch shift)

We have one for changing speed without affecting pitch (time stretch)

But that is the word for changing pitch and speed together? You know, the simplest technique.

New rule! I've seen a bunch of games not letting you change difficulty mode if you play on Hard.

I don't think this is super great, bc generally I like playing games on Hard but boss fights on Normal. Well depends on the game.

Why not, instead, having a "lock difficulty" option when you start a new game? If you enable it, you're not able to change difficulty mid-game.

That way, people can decide for themselves if they want to remove the temptation of changing difficulty.

Best superpower? You get $35 every time you convince someone a thing is true that is actually completely false. The $35 is adjusted for inflation. You're unable to make money any other way for the rest of your life.

Best superpower? A spell which...

A: Refills any glass with a copy of whatever drinkable liquid was last poured into it
B: Makes something not experience time until you revert the effect
C: Makes a copy of anything. Works once per object and not at a copy

I occasionally toot about software that frustrates me. But honestly, sometimes a piece of software does its job so transparently and well that I rarely mention it online because I don't even notice I'm using it.

In praise of such software, what's your favorite?

imma go with Renoise (music software) and High-Logic FontCreator.

Mastodon, you can just tell me 10 people liked a toot and who. You don't need to show the toot in its entirety 10 times in a row to convey this information.

ugh, fuck. Anxiety combined with having written things that was interpreted as bad faith questions (I should have learned about the context before asking). Anyway, toots removed now.

I just hate messing up. I feel like such a shit :(

If my brain was doing okay, I'd just shrug it off like it didn't happen.

Question? Am I in the wrong here? I'm not 100% sure I know how things works here? https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@Nifflas/110645514733968059

I'm so confused. I should probably not have made the original reply.

Oh no, naming problems! The hardest part of programming.

Question, what's the opposite of a blocker?

Like, a blocker in this context would block a signal if the blocker is active.

But this one is the opposite: it's allowing the signal to pass if it's active.

Problem is, "allower" just doesn't have the same ring.

Random game dev tip! I know it's extremely specific, but it took me two games to fully internalize it.

If in 2D, player aims with a thumbstick, hide the aiming line completely when they center the stick.

Otherwise, many players will not realize they can adjust their aim with the thumbstick without re-centering it every time. They'll frustratedly keep flinging and flinging the stick until aim line points perfectly.

Yes, I promise this is very common. I've done tons of playtesting to solve this

So Zelda is becoming a movie, huh? I hope they don't focus too much of Link's character arc! In the best Zeldas, link is just the happiest when exploring, kicking monster butt, wearing stunning outfits, smashing pots and occasionally helping people.

In my headcanon, he's in his element when doing it and loves every second. So if the story focuses on struggle and personal growth, it should focus on other characters for that aspect.

Sometimes, I use Facebook to keep track of local events in town to go to.

Facebook really is something else. I saw an offensive "suggested for you" post. So I blocked it.

Then another appeared on the same topic. Block. Now, more and more appears. Block block block. It's highly a specific topic so Facebook must think it's one of my interests.

I think I figured it out. I have to stop scrolling to block it, and Facebook's algorithm must think stop scrolling = find it interesting.

Audio tip: Hard panning music left and right is extremely uncomfortable to the ears, especially with headphones.

If a jukebox exists in a physical space in a game, never let it pan fully right or left.

(I'm looking at you, Minecraft)

Best superpower? A machine that makes you super smart for one hour, a helmet that instantly makes you sober, the duplicator (it's VERY powerful, even just mentioning it makes it duplicate something), or a machine that makes you super smart for one hour?

I've mentioned this on the other platform, but here are two games I'd really like to exist. They're sorta opposites. Both are for two players.

A: A competitive Tango dancing game, where both dancing partners are assassins trying to kill each other during the dance

B: A cooperative pro wrestling game, where neither player are trying to actually defeat the other, but just trying to put on a really good show for the audience, building suspense & creating payoffs
