Terrific and important op-ed. Campus protest crackdowns claim to be about antisemitism – but they’re part of a rightwing plan | Arielle Angel | The Guardian

@barney Yes, it’s a problem when Jewish students are harassed and threatened. Also a problem when pro-Palestinian students are harassed and threatened, or beaten as at UCLA, (or shot, as in the case of three friends in Vermont). But the answer is not militarized police sweeps and laws that further allow armed suppression of dissent, speech & assembly by fiat. Also, the encampments were mostly peaceful. Many Jewish students are among the protesters. It’s complicated.

Behind the scenes, the raw power of millions and an unhappy donor moved Shafik to call in the cops. An object lesson in how private philanthropy in the age of billionaires is bad for academic freedom. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/10/us/columbia-university-donor-angelica-berrie.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

“Israel is trying to control the narrative, and it is trying to deprive even the Israeli audience from seeing the atrocities in Gaza,” said Jamil Dakwar, a law professor at New York University and a founding attorney of Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel.

A spokesman for the U.S. State Department, Matthew Miller, said on Monday, “We think Al Jazeera ought to be able to operate in Israel, as they operate in other countries.” https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/09/world/middleeast/al-jazeera-israel-shutdown.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Closing off a country to information, news and ideas from abroad has long been a hallmark of repressive governments.

“The legitimacy of any democracy turns in part on its citizens having unrestricted access to foreign media,” Mr. Jaffer said.

“Masked counterprotesters entered the encampment set up last week by students opposed to the war in Gaza. The attackers hurled a firecracker into the encampment, tore down its outer walls and threw heavy objects at the pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

No arrests have been made in connection with the attack.”

Still no arrests of the violent agents provocateurs?

That “precision” police operation that Eric Adams bragged about with edited video? A cop fired his gun “accidentally” in Columbia’s Hamilton Hall, THE CITY confirms — scooping the media establishment. « The attackers, carrying Israeli flags, then tried to tear down the pro-Palestinian camp, assaulting students with pepper spray, sticks, stones and metal fencing. Footage from the police bust at Hamilton Hall — what Columbia’s president didn’t want the news media to see. Does it look like safety for students?
And she has asked the NYPD to stay on campus through May 17 to secure graduation, turning the university into an armed camp.
There will be more protests. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7T3shB7wYdI

The NY19 Congressional district election could determine whether Democrats take back the House. So why is the Josh Riley campaign so silent? How is this appealing Democratic responding to the Republican incumbent, Marc Molinaro? Google Josh Riley and see that the response dates from September 2023!
Despite signing up for email from his campaign, I’ve received nothing. What is his campaign manager, Daniel Fleiss, doing? https://joshrileyforcongress.com/press/riley-to-molinaro-do-your-job-or-dont-get-paid/

“A small group of students camped on one lawn, in a very large university complex, calling for relatively minor financial rearrangements in a baggy & poorly managed endowment, are turned by the repressive action of the the University administration under pressure from politicians & donors, into a global news story, putting in doubt the standing of a multi-billion dollar…organization. It is a case study in panicked control freakery gone wrong.” Adam Tooze https://adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-279-columbia-universitys
